    Re: Official Wii Discussion

Quick question for Gamecube games and/or virtual console ----- I see 3 different combos possible -- what's the best ?

    a) gamecube controllers alone (will they work on virtual console)
    b) classic controllers (will they work on gamecube games)
    c) one of each?

I have my WII but it's staying packaged till Xmas -- and I've never owned a Cube so obviously I want to buy the least number of peripherals as possible ---- THANKS

BTW do Cube games look and play perfectly (please no bC issues....)

Get one of each, Classic and Cube.

Cube controller will work most classic games, but the Classic controller won't work Cube games.

I tried playing a VC game with the Cube controller last night (I got my Xmas gift early ) and I didn't like playing with it. The control stick didn't control Sonic, you have to use the tiny control pad on the Cube controller. You might find it ok, but I didn't really like it. So I just played with the wii remote. For more complex games I might need more accessible buttons though that the Cube controller will give me. The N64 games might let you use the control stick though, I haven't tried any of them yet. I guess it makes sense not to be able to use the control stick on games that originally only had the control pad, I just don't like the placement of it on the Cube controller. I might pick up a classic eventually, but I think right now I can get by using the wii remote and the Cube controller.

I haven't tried to play a Cube game yet in the Wii, I will tonight and make sure it plays them back real well.

Kinda funny too. I remember when i got my ps2 i also got s-video cables and noticed the difference in SSX right away. With this, not so much.

I am speaking about a 32" hdtv, so YMMV with bigger tv's.
I have a chance to get S-Video cables today. Should I wait for the component or pay $10 less for s-video?

WAIT. Component is much sharper than S-video. Might as well make the right jump in video quality, IMO.

If you are planning on playing GameCube games, you need a controller and a GC memory pack. I, and I'm definitely not alone, strongly suggest picking up the Wavebird wireless controller (I picked up the platinum since there wasn't a white one) as it goes along with the wireless aspect the Wii is showcasing, plus its an awesome controller. When I play Mario 64, I use a GC controller. When I play Sonic and Mario, I use the Wii remote as that is essentially an NES controller on its side. Eventually, though, you'll need to pick up a classic controller if you plan on picking up Super Smash Bros. next year.

How does the GC controller work with classic games? Does it show you a controller map to show you which buttons are for what?

When I play Mario 64, I use a GC controller. When I play Sonic and Mario, I use the Wii remote as that is essentially an NES controller on its side. Eventually, though, you'll need to pick up a classic controller if you plan on picking up Super Smash Bros. next year.
Thanks for the responses --- So (I'm a little dense) -- Can I get by with 2 wavebirds with memory and 2 wii remotes ? I would rather not buy the classic also --- Or am I stuck with having to have all three...

Also is the gamecube a software emulation (ie XBOX 360 problems) or did they just integrate the chip and therefore there won't be any problems with backward compatiblity?

I created a bunch of Mii's last night so that when I'm playing Wii Sports I see them sometimes instead of generic Wii generated people. So far I've only seen them in the baseball game. I'm hoping they show up in tennis, boxing, and the other sports. I exchanged codes with someone on this board and a copy of his Mii showed up in a baseball game last night. I thought it was pretty neat to get him as a character rather than the generic ones.

So far the only thing I haven't really liked about the Wii is the cost of the VC games. They all cost between $5-$10 it seems. That's a little high for old games IMO. I'll have to be more selective. I think Nintendo should give you Wii points for registering games or accomplishments or something to help offset the price.

I saw this on the net and thought it was funny:
                            Lost Mii's

I created some TV Mii's last night, I might have to make a Lost one like whoever did this one did. I made a Raymond and Debra for Everybody Loves Raymond, Chandler and Joey from Friends, and Urkel last night. It's funny seeing them play baseball.

Best Buy has some 3rd party component cables. I just picked up a set from React and will see how they do tonight.
