I'm guessing it's probably overheating based on what I've read about the system shutting off automatically under too much heat, but I keep it well ventilated and I've never had a problem like that. I do, however, have it on a lot of the time because of Folding. Perhaps it's time to cut back on that for a bit.

After leaving it unplugged for about an hour or so, it hasn't shut off for a half hour so far, and still ticking. So it does appear that overheating was the problem. Ah well, I guess they can keep looking for "The cure" without me for awhile.

I'll keep you guys posted as to whether or not it keeps happening.
Yeah! I was wondering why you were going crazy with the "bcruise is online/offline" prompt on my screen. Fingers crossed for your ps3!

Yeah...I really need to kill that wireless connection anyway - it's too weak a signal to be reliable for anything but friend list and web browsing. I'm going back to my old standby - unplugging the ethernet cable from this computer and into the PS3 when I want to use it.

bcruise, instead why don't you get a router? I have used one for over 5 years and they work great.

I have one, and the router itself does work fine. In fact, when I say "Wired", I mean it's wired through the router. The problem comes with trying to route a 1 MB - ish connection 3 different ways - through a desktop computer, a laptop (always wireless), and a PS3. Obviously there just isn't enough bandwidth there to support all that at the same time, which is why it's better for me to cut one out while it's not being used. I'm sure that's what's causing my wireless PS3 drops. ISP's are few and far between here, so getting a faster service really isn't an option - just have to deal with it.

BTW, just got done playing some SSFII, and the PS3's been on for more than an hour with no shutoffs. Hope I'm not jinxing anything.

Businesses that have 15+ computers run fine off a 1mb DSL connection. If you're getting disconnects then something is wrong.

Re: Official PS3 Discussion Part III...

Well, it would appear that this problem is not going to get better, and I'm just about ready to send it in. It's gone out on me the last two days in the same way - on for about an hour, and then a complete power loss to the system. Immediately after those, it wouldn't stay on for more than 5 minutes before shutting off again. It sounds like a classic case of overheating, but the conditions in my gaming area are the least likely as possible to cause that. It has plenty of room to "breathe" - 10 inches from the back wall, and several feet on the right (vent side). No case or anything - it's all wide open. I think it's more likely a power supply issue, or a part of the cooling that's failing. Whatever it is, it's beyond my ability to fix.

This isn't the yellow light thing that other people are experiencing, and there's been no Hard drive data loss at all. I do know someone at work who described this very same problem though(like mine, also a 60 GB), so at least I know I'm not completely alone.

The system's out of warranty, but I don't really mind the service cost when I think how lucky I've been to NOT have this stuff happen with my older systems. The only system I've ever really had fail was the old pop-slot box NES, and we all know what happens to those. So anyway, with all the repair costs I've saved from not having those systems go bad, I think I can afford this one.

I'm pretty sure I've tried everything possible - , removing dust, different surge protector/outlet/power cord, vertical/horizontal PS3, various games (one outage in Home, one in Eternal Sonata, one in SSFII and a bunch in the XMB). But if anyone has any suggestions (other than "get a 360") I'm all ears.

Not that there's ever a "good" time for stuff like this to happen, but at least it was at a time when I don't have hardly any new games on my priority list. I was right in the middle of Eternal Sonata which sucks, but I did copy my save data down for when I get a working system again. Saved several of my game clear files to a flash drive too - MGS4, Valkyria, HSG:OOB - it's nice that I can actually access the system to do this stuff.

Unfortunately, it means I may not be joining you guys for more HSG for awhile...

Whenever the box gets here. I did the preliminary stuff last night - deactivating the system and restoring the PS3 to its default state (mostly to protect my CC info in my account that's on there).

What does activating/deactivating the system do? I've always wanted to know what it's purpose was.

From what I can tell it's a form of DRM for the PSN Store. You probably have a limited number of times you can download and install a game or movie from one account, so people couldn't just share one account and download a game any number of times to any system. Deactivating the system removes that "license" so to speak from that system, so it can be used on another system (whichever one I happen to get back, even if it's a refurb). Probably makes the games unplayable on the first system, though I didn't try that before factory resetting it (HDD wipe). It's similar to Out of the Park's license system, I think.

Shipping box (or "coffin" if you prefer) is in the mail now, and scheduled to arrive on Thursday.

                              As bcruise mentioned, DRM control.

Always deactivate a system when you're returning it/shipping it because when you get a new one you won't be able to activate it as you can only activate one PS3 at a time.
