Re: Playstation Network and Discussion - The New Beginning

Why would I want to pay full price for a game that I have no chance of trading in and getting any money back on? If they priced digital copies at $39.99 instead, I'd be more apt to buy them. How can they justify charging full price for a game with no case or disk? There's like zero cost for them to produce it.

The only benefit is it being tax-free, but I agree. It's ridiculous IMO.

I hope that the next gen consoles won't be digital distribution only. I'm afraid we are headed that way.

Just look at what has happened in the music industry. I am a CD guy, but good luck trying to find a CD these days. Especially if it came out more that five years ago.

I don't think they will be. Until fiber optic internet gives high speed to everyone, there's no way they can rely on download only. I know there are a few people on here who can't do any online gaming because their speeds are too slow. I can't imagine how long it'd take to download some next gen titles.

I think you'll see simultaneous distribution for a bunch of years, and then a transition to digital only after this next generation.

Similar to how VHS stuck around for awhile while DVD was getting big.

Yeah, the "box" stores have removed a lot of older CD's. Luckily there's a couple of independent music stores left where I can find what I'm looking for, but it can be frustrating at times.

That will be the end of my gaming days(at least for new stuff) if it ever does.

At the same time, there are some games that just feel like they belong more as digital downloads, and I wouldn't buy them if they were discs, yet I don't know why.

The ones I'm referring to are the "quicker" games. I don't mean the ones that take a shorter amount of time to beat, I just mean the ones that don't take as long to pass through a single session. ZEN Pinball, NBA Jam, NHL 3-on-3 Arcade, WipEout, etc. I also logged so many hours on Fat Princess when it first came out, and would to this day without the stupid new maps they've put out.

But the regular games? I need my discs, baby.

                    Why?

I'll be glad when discs die out. No more driving to a store to pick up a game, no more waiting in line during a midnight release (pre-orders can be set to download automatically immediately once they are available), no worrying about scratching, no disc read errors, no manually popping out a disc, putting it back in its case, and putting in a new one when you want to switch games.

Sometimes, it's the imperfections/impatience/struggle that make things great. It's like a girl that's playing hard to get... as long as you get her in the end.

By the way, tell me you don't miss the days of blowing on the bottom of your game cartridges to make them work.

Especially if we can pre-install games like it is done with Steam, then release day at 12 p.m. it activates. This would be even better, we can play the game at midnight instead of having to wait till 8-10 a.m. for a store to open.

Apples to apples is stupid. You can play one player but to play with my wife you have to have at least 3 people and it won't let you play the computer. So basically I can't play it. Waste of $10

I like going to stores(being serious) , I like having (certain) collectors edition items like maps, statues etc..
And really I want a phyisical item for my $ not some download only. Yeah I use STEAM but mainly for cheap games etc..
Just grew up with cartridges and so on and have zero desire to be digital only.
Part of gaming for me is the interaction with people and digital only is just "boring" to me.
And I like midnight releases especially when my youngest daughter started going with me and we hang out and watch the people.
In any case digital only is just not for me.
