I use Xbox.com now and then. Xbox.com uses your Windows Live ID and password. So if someone gets into xbox.com with your details, they have the keys to the kingdom.

Another reason that I don't like Microsoft.

After suspending my account for about a week and a half they told me that no transactions were made when the account was not being used on my system, even though the phone rep said that there was.

At least I only lost 2000 points, but this is a freaking joke. Microsoft probably has the worst support I have ever seen. From now on, no CC on the account and only buy points when I need them. Seriously wish I liked Sony a little more so I could hop over there.

I also lost the days that my account was suspended.

      Ugh.

I can't believe this. I went into our XBL account and could NOT delete my credit card from my payment type. They directed me to the support website and it apparently had something to do with a recurrent payment relying on the card. The only 2 things we have are the XBL Gold and a COD Killer Elite / 1x thing we paid for. I took the recurrent off the CC since I took advantage of the recent Amazon sale, and it STILL wouldn't let me eliminate the CC. These bastards force you into a position to cancel a card just to keep the ****ing hackers away from you. This is why Micro$oft pisses people off so much.

Yeah, the credit card I originally used to sign up expired so I was lucky on that front. Never updated the CC info with the new expiration date so it can't be used and now I just use pre-paid cards.

            Re: Xbox live hackings

Here's what I wrote to them, though I'm sure it's like spitting in the wind:

"I have tried numerous times to cancel my credit card information from xbox.com via the accounts section. I keep getting a message stating "This payment option cannot be removed at this time. Go to the Payment method information page to view services associated with this payment option."

My credit card has already been charged and I have NO recurrent payments active. There should be absolutely NO reason that I cannot remove this card from your records and you practically force me into a position to cancel my own credit card, which affects what I do want to keep in queue for other companies.

You are putting yourselves in a position for a lawsuit should my credit card information get stolen and I am erroneously held responsible for charges that I did not incur. Microsoft, like any other company, is susceptible to hackers as you know all too well. But, if you do not allow your own customers to have complete control of THEIR billing information and options, then you are liable."

              Re: Xbox live hackings

You have to call them to get anything done. Their text support is virtually useless.

If you paid for any live with your CC, its locked in. The scary thing, my parents CC which got taken off a few months ago gave the Microsoft support access to my account after the hacker changed my security question.

Honestly though, I would limit your conversations with Xbox support. They are terrible.

                    Re: Xbox live hackings

i had my debit card and paypal as my only pay options.. i was able to remove my debit without a problem and it was what i used to re-up my account in November.

my paypal has a visa gift card attached to it.. that i add money to when i want to use it etc.

so now, none of my cards connected to my bank accounts etc are attached to live..

                      Re: Xbox live hackings

I believe I got hacked. The other day I got a letter from bank about "suspicious" card activity and they did NOT ok the transactions. I didn't think anything of it as they issued me another card.
Today I get an email saying I got 400 free MS points for renewing my XBOX LIVE. I sign in to my MS Live account on PC and it's not me. Another gamertag shows up.

                      jeeeesh...!

                      UPDATE:
                      What a confusing morning!
                      I wasn't hacked

I'll try and make this as simple as I can. While I did get a new card from bank for "suspicious" activity it didn't have anything to do with XBOX.

                      Why I freaked:
Letter from bank saying my card was possibly comprimised
                      then:
Today I get am email from MS about 400 points for resigning up for LIVE. I click the link to sign in and it goes to my windows Live sign in. I sign in and it shows a gamertag I had no idea about. So I freaked.

                      Long story short:
I use my regular email for my XBOX Live account and not a windows live email. Back in 2009 when I obtained a MS Live Email account (@live.com) it got associated with a default XBOX gamertag that I created. I created a new Gamertag because it would not allow me (at the time) to associate the new @live.com email with my XBOX Live account because it was already associated with my comcast email.

So I just created a new gamertage just so I could get the @live email account set up..

So after 3 years I had forgotten, so when I accidently logged into the wrong email log in to get the points the old gamertag showed up and my butt puckered.

                        They Got Me!!!

Well I got hacked for the first time ever. I am locked out of xbl while they investigate. Somebody wanted my soccer players I guess...

Anywho, I thought I would share something. You guys may already know this (don't flame if you do). When I told him I never enter my windows live ID information anywhere online the ms guy said there were rumors of modded xboxs that can actually grab your info if you are playing a game with them. About 2 days ago I had a freeze occur in ultimate team during a match that had never occurred in 250 matches. It wasn't a normal freeze, didnt lock up my system, just perpetual loading. Makes you wonder... I never thought I would join the hack'd club, but alas, here I am.

I was strongly considering buying a 360, then I read this thread.

Is this still a widespread problem?

Thread has been dead for a few months, probably depends on your definition of widespread to begin with.

Either way if you read the Kotaku article, a brand new 360 Gamertag is worth nothing to anyone who would potentially target you anyways.
