Then what's the point? If I'm going to use a controller and look at a display, I'm going to use my console, not sit at a table with a tablet propped up.

If I have to carry a controller around for a proper gaming experience, then this still isn't a portable gaming device.

The point is Microsoft realizes that the PC, Console, Tablet, Movie Viewer, MP3 Player/etc will converge eventually and they are trying to get a jumpstart on the competition. It sounds like they really were focusing heavily on privacy with this, so my guess is it's better to get a foot out of the door first and patch it along the way rather than wait too long trying to plan it right.

              1. It outputs video to your TV if you're at home. It is a console, in a way.

              2. It would be sweet for long car rides.

I guess I could see that for kids in the car. As an adult that would be useless for me though, since I'm always the one driving

Aren't there two devices in that image, a tablet and a 'stationary computing device' ? Judging by some of the responses I think some might have overlooked that?

Specs aren't bad, all comes down to the software of course. No mention of storage medium beyond a HDD is curious.

They do mention SD card slot as well, but I'm guessing you'd have to download all of the content/games. That might be a huge oversight as internet speeds in US are still way to slow to be downloading 5 GB games.

So what does it mean though?

Are they two separate devices or is the tablet something you can dock in the bigger station? I do know one thing, the stationary device has really impressive specs for a next gen console. Usually console specs are outdated compared to the PCs out at the time they begin manufacturing. I wonder how much it's going to cost

                        Re: Xbox 720

A new report suggests that Microsoft's next generation Xbox will come in two very different models.

The first is the console we're all expecting, providing true next-generation gaming experiences, while the other will be a more affordable unit aimed at the casual market. The latter is said to use Windows 8 as the basis of its operating system, and won't be able to run the latest triple-A titles, but will support downloadable casual games from Xbox Live.

So it will function more like a set-top box, or an Apple TV, allowing a greater number of consumers to experience the console's growing range of entertainment apps. Apparently, the next-gen Xbox will be an 'always on' device that starts up almost instantly, letting you resume your game with little downtime.

This latest report comes from The Verge, which cites "multiple sources familiar with Redmond's plans". (Redmond, if you were wondering, is the location of Microsoft's head quarters.) It also claims that this twin SKU approach is part of a larger Microsoft strategy to ensure that its core Xbox software is 'scalable' to run on a variety of devices. There's even talk of making it so that a phone could be capable of delivering a full Xbox Live experience. It has also looked into including licensing core Xbox functionality into television sets.

It's believed that both devices will be announced sometime in 2013 and made available before the end of the year.

A low-cost product to try and further increase their presence in the living room and compete against other set-top streaming boxes. If it can play XBLA games and with all their live TV offerings, it would be the most feature rich. But will some services be locked behind a pay wall?

Problem is it's a video game system first and foremost. I know that's becoming less and less of the main focus for both Sony and MS, but it still just seems dumb to me. To not let people play the best and latest games is like giving someone a TV and saying you can't watch the best channels.
