    Re: Xbox 720

I highly doubt that they do the online-only stuff. There are far too many people that don't have access to internet, that's a lot of potential costumers that they would be ignoring.

I really hope they don't do the no used games thing. I don't ever buy used games, but I do trade in a lot of games, and not being able to trade in games would reduce me buying new games. I think the online passes and having content for only new purchases, like Nuketown from Black Ops 2, works pretty well for recouping some money lost on used games. If not, then raise the price of the online passes making the people who buy used make a tougher choice between buying new or used.

I agree. Good time to start upgrading the PC.

On the reports, are Sony and MS really loosing THAT much money to Gamestop and other retailers of used games? I know that 100% of the money for a used game goes to Gamestop, but some games can only be found used. It reminds me of CD Keys that computer games I bought at EB Games used to have.

I'm more concerned with the backwards compatibility. When MS eventually shuts off the 360 servers, what happens to updates, patches, and all the DLC people have accumulated?

Yet again I'm left wondering how people can be so stupid and yet run multi-million/billion dollar companies without them entirely sinking. To even let these rumors get out is stupid.

I connect my 360 online for less than 5 minutes per week and won't even buy a game on PC that needs an always online connection. (Albeit there's only one on the 360 but I won't buy that either.) For that matter I won't even buy the XBL indie games that need an online connection for start up.

I never bought used this gen and don't have anywhere to trade-in anymore but I do rent a lot. So there's zero chance of me buying this system. Pile that on with the $70/$80 game price rumor.

Btw you CAN trade-in some PC games at greenman. Can't trade-in anything that needs Steam though. Looks like I'll be PC only next-gen. Since getting a gaming quality PC I've barely bought anythnig on 360 anyway.

          Analysts are skeptical:

          GamesBeat

“While an online connection gives Microsoft the capability to validate every piece of software placed into its console, it doesn’t logically follow that they must do so because of that connection,” said Pachter. “I am fine with the theory that they may do so, but the article stated it as a foregone conclusion, based upon a conversation with ‘sources with first-hand experience.’ None of those sources is in a position to know what Microsoft’s strategy is, and I assure you that even Microsoft hasn’t yet determined its ultimate strategy. They are still thinking about a variety of functions.”
“It’s highly unlikely,” R.W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian told GamesBeat. “They may have the capability to prevent resales, but Microsoft needs retail support to sell hardware, and many of their core gamer customers trade a lot of games.”
Another analyst found a problem with requiring an Internet connection.

“As of [the first quarter of 2012], our surveys showed that in the U.S. 30 percent of Xbox 360s weren’t connected to the Internet at all,” IDC research manager Lewis Ward told GamesBeat. “Now, this percentage has probably come down a bit, but if Microsoft does launch its next-gen Xbox 360 this holiday season — as I expect [it will] — they could be limiting their own addressable customer base by approximately 25 percent — and that [number is even] higher in developing nations.”
“Neither of them is stupid enough to ban used games on their own, and neither is evil enough to collude together to do so, especially since the benefits of a used game ban [primarily helps] publishers, and not the console manufacturers.”

There are only certain games you trade in on Greenmangaming and even then, you'll barely get any money back.

              Man, this stuff is great!

Not sure which way it goes, but there sure has been alot of smoke about used games....And I think he is off about New game sales....Doesn't Sony/MS get a cut of all New Game sales for their systems?

And I fully believe that if it does go down, BOTH companies do it. It would be suicidal at this point with all the negative press about to go alone on this. So yes, they probably are that "Evil".

Feb 20th is going to be very interesting.

Well, the studios are mad at Gamestop taking $5 off the price of a new game and keeping all the money so Microsoft and Sony will definitely do something but I think what's more likely to happen is that they start selling more stuff in their online stores on the same day the physical version is released. Nintendo and Sony are already doing day 1 digital releases with certain games and Microsoft is starting to shorten the amount of time it takes before a new game is available on demand. Being more aggressive with dates and prices online makes much more sense than forcing an internet connection to play a game.

Gamestop is greedy, so is the industry. This is bean counters and corporate suits wanting all the money. We have $60 games, $15 DLC packs, season passes, online passes, paid online, $60 digital games, and server shutdowns. Companies like EA and Activision only care about the money they can get now, which is why you see them drive franchises into the ground with annual sequels.

Now they want to kill used sales. What's so wrong with people buying their kids a two year old Madden for $1 from Gamestop that EA has already abandoned and shut down the servers. How about games that get low print runs and are impossible to find new anywhere a few years after release, like Metroid Prime Trilogy for the Wii. Why should any dev/publisher be entitled to making any money off a used sale at all anyways?

I like having the right to sell unwanted games for $35-40 on ebay or forums and then putting that towards new games. I also like digging up forgotten hidden gems on consoles, which are usually clearanced out of retail pretty quickly. I actually like owning my games where I can take them to a friend's house and have a fun night without having to drag my entire console with me.

The industry isn't healthy or sustainable, but used games are an easy scapegoat for bloated budgets, poor management, and a AAA blockbuster or nothing development mindset.

Here is the thing, I'm all for selling games on eBay..when I oau $60 for a game and they wanna give me $17 for it is just pathetic, that's where my problem IT . I'm not talking about a game I help into for 6 months but a month or two.

It is their business model and we get to choose whether or not to do business with them. More importantly it isn't as lucrative as many think. If you buy a $60 game and trade it in a year later for $10 they may put it on the shelf for $50 but there is no telling when or if they will ever sell that game. Most people seem to think they when they trade in a game for $10 when the company sells it for $50 that the company is automatically making a 400% profit, but they only get that when they sell it. Anyone who has ever been inside of an Gamestop knows how many used games are sitting on the shelves. Each of those used games represents money they have tied up in inventory. No they are not hurting for cash...but should a business not be profitable?

To me these proposals really hurt college students and younger. Personally I used Gamestop a lot when I was in college and high school and couldn't afford many games. I would wait for one of their trade-in specials and I was able to play a lot of games I otherwise would not have that way. Now that I'm out of college and working full time I do not have to resort to that, but all of those people who are still in school do not have that luxury. And while the rumors won't greatly inhibit my ability to purchase games it will turn me off from any new consoles. I don't like connecting online unless I'm actually going to play online, it adds time to the loading that is just unnecessary to me and it is using bandwidth for no good reason (not to mention the problems that could potentially arise if your internet goes down). The proposals for eliminating the used game industry also eliminate taking a game to a game to a friend's house to play with all of the piracy protection strategies which reduces the value as a customer for some games.

Oh it's going to get messy if this is all true, that's as far as I will go into it.

Now what it does do is remove 10 titles a year or more that I would get for Xbox. I will now purchase most of my games on PC for half the cost the consoles will sell them. Then I will just buy my select 3 to 4 titles a year on Xbox, like NCAA, madden, nba 2k, halo.

I won't be dumping thousands in games on next generation, not when I have the option to get the same thing for cheaper on PC.

Only way I see this being a positive is if they start having digital sales similar to the Steam model. If not I can see PC making a strong push again if consoles go this route.

The whole tying games to a console isn't a big deal to me. It sucks but what can you do...

Being online 100% of the time is. So if I'm home and my Internet goes out or XBL goes out I can't play?
