Right. It's the same thing with the DRM and sharing.

"You need the Kinect because we say you do and because the controllers connect to it."

No, I need a Kinect because you put the receiver for the controllers into the Kinect so you could push something else that should be optional (even if it comes with the system 100% of the time so you know that everyone with an XBone has one) onto the consumer.

MS just doesn't want the big pile of money they spent on engineering the Kinect to go to waste so they force it on consumers when there is truly no need for it to be mandatory.

That, and the fact they are being named in every article coming out exposing companies sharing and selling information to marketers and other organizations is all too coincidental.

You don't think they added 300,000 servers just for you to game on do you?

Think about it, 300,000 servers. That is a lot of "storage" of information collected.

It doesn't even matter, they changed their policies to save face and placate all the people who hated the bold move and that is that.

From what I've been reading, if anyone is going to advance this vision/cause it'll likely be a niche gaming market from the likes of Apple.

An Apple game console wouldn't insta-kill our PlayStations, Wii Us and Xboxen, but it has the potential to reach a much larger audience than Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft could ever hope for. Such an audience would be incredibly attractive to developers and publishers, and when big-name games start seeing more success on iOS than those others... well, we know how they do.

It also bears noting that iOS games are all tightly-controlled by DRM, there are no used game sales, and those decisions are completely out of developer and publisher hands, so they can't be held accountable.

Not saying it's a sure bet, but something's bound to come around the corner and push the envelope. It's just a matter of time before we move out of the dark ages eventually. Right in this moment isn't just the time I guess.

I totally respect your position but I will say this. If the tech is useless because it is optional this only means it is not good enough to stand on its own.

They aren't "forcing" it on anyone, if people don't want it they don't have to purchase the Xbox One. It really is that simple.

That is how they are offering the console, take it or leave it. I do understand that for many it is leave it. So please don't think I don't understand your viewpoint. But they definitely aren't forcing anything on you, it is up to you and you alone if you purchase their console as they're currently offering it.

Too large of a leap to make.

Apple isn't even a player in the PC gaming market. You also can't compare 60 dollar video game purchases to 5 dollar mobile app purchases. Android has a similar market share as opposed to Apple and that's based on being open.

As for the bolded part... Since when is consumer rights the dark ages? Maybe you haven't ever been a PC gamer, but DRM isn't the answer. Anyone that has a favorable view of DRM needs to look into things a bit more.

I think Microsoft believes they are sitting on some pretty amazing technology. With that being said, why not make their baby a requirement? They clearly put a lot into this and the X1 seems to work seamless with it. A lot of the "gamer" only crowd is reacting negatively to it of course, but they will draw in some of the non-gamer crowd who can appreciate new technology.

I thought i read you can disable most if not all of the Kinect features if it bothers you. Don't worry, you can still use your remote controls and game controllers.

I don't hate Steam and that's DRM...I have to sign into my Steam account on a new PC to play stuff. I get your point though...

Stop acting like people that don't like the Kinect are anti technology. I've seen that in here multiple times lately.

Am I a gamer only? My PS3 gets used for Crunchyroll at least 10x more than games. The last time my PS3 has been used for a game is BioShock Infinite when I got it and beat it before release, whenever that was. Do I fit into your "gamer only" box?

The kinect adds zero to the console, in terms of features. Everything you can do with the Kinect in terms of switching screens, controlling games and even turning the system on can already be done without the Kinect.

I can push a power button when I walk into my room just as fast as I can say XBox on. I can hit "A" faster than I can say "XBox play next episode." I can change channels on my remotes faster than I can say "Xbox channel 210".

You catch my drift? MS has offered nothing new with the Kinect that makes me feel like having one in my life would be beneficial in the least. Everything the Kinect can do (aside from silly little gimmicks in games) can already be done with the push of a button or two.

I wasn't specifically tying those two terms together but if that is what you read I can understand. My dark ages reference was more of a general way of doing things console wise. I liked where they were headed and wanted to give their prior policy a shot and see where it goes. They changed policy and I understand the reasons why.

It really is just a matter of time as I've said, just not right now but down the road we'll see.

Exactly... a choice. PS4 going one way and XBox One going a different route.

But that has changed and policy wise the two consoles are a bit more similar now.

Their only way was for DRM, nothing more. All those rumored, speculative, and wishful thinking that people thought would have happened, could have without the DRM.

The fact that they had no concrete features about the positives, even marketing wise could have spun it better. But they had nothing to market.

They balked and have to go to the drawing board. And the fact the console needs a day one patch to be "DRM free" proves the motives were CONTROL first and foremost.

I don't argue any of those points, no doubt they wanted control. All I'm saying is that I didn't mind the policies they had in place initially and was willing to give it a go and see where it went. But it's changed now so that's that. I'm still picking up the console day one but I would have liked to have seen their former stance in place (again, I totally get why they balked as you said).
