      Re: Xbox One

It was an "always on" DRM push. If their true intention as to provide all this goodness you think they were going to provide, they had years to work it out, just as they did the DRM they so effortlessly were going to "innovate".

It blew up on them, they had nothing to back it that was concrete, only bits and pieces to make the internet run with "what ifs". I personally think it was all smoke and mirrors. If they had anything to constitute the "DRM", it would have been released at the time. Definitely to soften the blow.

Need I say anymore with the recent news released on how they gave Skype info, email info, etc over to certain agencies? Yeah, their all about our privacy alright.

The more and more articles and interviews that come out, further solidifies they had nothing but a DRM heavy, industry controlling, always watching you to give up your info box.

From what I understand, you buy a physical, you also have rights to use the digital version on their servers. Just like Steam. You buy a physical, you don't even need to install it, just enter the code and download the digital.

Steam was even merging games not by Valve. I was able to merge Unreal Tournament 3 Black Edition buy just entering the DVD key on Steam. So now I have it on my Steam list, fully digital, and full mod/patch support.

I said merging digital and physical because we were going to get the benefits of a digital purchase (no disc switching/in drive) merged with the benefits of physical media (share with friends, play library anywhere, buy/sell used, etc). That requires some level of license management/verification that I imagine at some point we'll have access to as an option.

Done at the console level would indeed be innovative if executed the way they were talking about.

Merging isnt some specific phrase or term I was invoking.

I agree. To have physical discs act like digital and allowing you to resell games requires DRM like Steam is...

I hope they figure out features over time like it seems...

Still have my MS one but guessing it won't work.
Hate to buy a new one IF they make one. Will probably be up to Logitech.

The funny thing is people all hated the idea of Steam at first. I think most people would have actually liked the Steam like service that Microsoft was going to offer with the added DRM. Steam is DRM yet most people love it.

The real problem with all of this is Microsoft's lack of communication to the consumer. For the most part, we had no idea how this service was going to work. I think Microsoft would have really benefited from showing a live demo of how their new marketplace would work.

The DRM stuff didn't really hurt the Xbox One for me. It was the lack of firm direction by Microsoft that has turned me off the Xbox One. I think Microsoft needs to come up with a firm direction for the console and take the time to explain to the consumers what it is. They've flipped flopped on quite a few things now. Clear the air and remove some of the confusion.

I think the Cloud is going to be huge in next-gen and Microsoft has a clear advantage of Sony in terms of money invested in the Cloud. Sony can't compete with Microsoft on that front. This is where I could see the Xbox One beating the PS4. I'd love to hear more from Microsoft on how the Cloud will benefit the Xbox One.

The issue wasn't the fact that there *was* DRM. It's the fact that it was more restricting than it needed to be. Steam has an offline mode. It's not a brick that doesn't work if you don't check-in every 24 hours. I can bust out my laptop that hasn't been connected to the internet and play any game I want to that I've activated once.

Speaking of racing wheels at what not, Microsoft better open things up to 3rd parties more this generation. Their selection was way behind the competition in that department, and their first party stuff was not all that great.

Quite a lot of people were upset just with the used games bit. I can agree with the one a day online check-in being too restrictive. It wouldn't bother me but I could see how some have a problem with it. However, if that is all that people were upset about then they should have expressed their outrage at just that.

At a certain point, people just don't like change. Like I said, Steam was hated by many before they saw how great it ended up being. I'm not saying Microsoft would've been as successful but I think people would have liked it just fine had they given it a real chance.

Yeah. Part of me loves their decision because it shows that, as gamers, we do truly have a voice when it comes to BS we don't like. The other part of me hates it because MS would have changed something. Either a new norm gets set or they absolutely get blown out of the console war. Something would have happened though.

The only thing I don't like is comparing Steam to consoles. Steam works because the PC is an open marketplace. There are plenty of non-DRM options (GOG being one of the biggest) and Steam isn't forced upon anyone. This is being forced upon you because there would be no other options - I'm split as to whether or not it would be a good thing for gaming. A small part of me says good things could come from it (but the way it was wasn't a good way to do it at all) and most of me still hates it, because retail chains and the closed nature of console markets means it wouldn't be anything truly like Steam.

You see it now with the XBox and the indies. MS is a closed platform and they screw indie devs out of self publishing among the other issues that are there. Maybe in the future this could work but I think MS (and Sony) have much bigger things to worry about/fix before they go pushing too far into the future.

So far they have mentioned dedicated servers for games, and actual games can use the cloud to help run it instead of it just the xbox ones hardware.
It’s easier to do the right thing, than to explain why you didn’t.

Sitting in front of my PS3 for like 4 minutes while it tried to figure out what my gameface fighter will look like in 3d has me a little more interested in the cloud stuff.

Yup, Cloud processing is the feature that has me most excited about the Xbox One. Can't wait to see how developers will harness that added power further down the line.

What are some games people are thinking about purchasing when it launches? I've got my eye on Dead Rising 3 and NBA 2K14. Both look very promising to me. I'm also a tad bit surprised that the next iteration of Gears of War isn't a launch title.
