Yes but that is essentially the same thing. If you don't need the disk in to play, you have the same digital copy on your machine. I think it was to ease the transition, or for those with data caps/slow internet. But giving that option was the reason for the outrage...because to allow that, users would have to check in their library every 24 hours, otherwise you could simply install from a single disk over and over and over with no drawbacks so long as playing offline.

Re: Xbox One
Just to be clear, I'm in favor of digital and buy mostly digital but I do not want, nor believe, hard copy is going away anytime soon.
And as for Microsoft supposedly being in favor of it but backing off street the botched launch, I'd have to disagree. If either company really wanted or thought digital was happening soon they would not have released the systems with such small hard drives. I understand the cost but at very least if they wanted digital to succeed and had faith in it they would have offered models with larger hard drives at a bigger price tier.
And yes maybe some of younger guys here will see an all digital gaming world before you're dead but at my age I doubt I will.
To be honest no one should hope we go all digital either. As people have pointed out in this thread, if there is no competition amongst retailers then prices will remain about $59 or more for games.
Sure there will be some sales on occasion because Sony and Microsoft would still be competing but you'd not see prices and deals like you do with hundreds of retailers competing for your money.
Sony made it super easy to swap the HDD.
MS added external HDD support for game storage and have already made a console w/ a 1TB HDD.
Both have added the ability to preorder and preload new releases from their respective storefronts.
If Sony and MS have the ability to sell 3rd party games directly from their storefront on the console for the same or close to price the physical storefronts/retailers are selling, aren't they getting the profits from the sale rather than getting nothing from 3rd party games when physical discs are sold in stores? Why wouldn't they want that to succeed?XBL & PSN: zasbury25Comment

Re: Xbox One
The original concept of the Xbox one would have kept retailers in the mix, competition would have remained. Used games wouldn't even have gone away (a common myth) though I'm not sure services like GameFly and Redbox would be able to stock those games.
The hard drive thing is easy, no point passing along that cost to everyone when paths to upgrade are cheap for those that want to.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

The ability to add on, or manually replace, the hard drive is simply for the hardcore gamers like those of us here at OS. Do you seriously believe a Joe Schmo off the street is going to take apart his PS4, no matter how easy???
And even though MS made it simpler and less daunting with an external drive option the bottom line is the average gamer will not pay $100 or whatever because digital is filling up his hard disk, he will simply quit buying digital is all..
Guys, again I'm a techie and I've upgraded all my machines. Many of you on here are techie, hardcore gamers too.
It just amazes me though that so many of you haven't realized by now just how lazy and dumb the public is when it comes to technology.
Maybe some of you need to work tech support at a computer store for a few years and you'd be just how shocked at the average user level.
Opening up a PS4 that cost $450 and replacing the hard drive ??!!!!LMAO yeah right...

Re: Xbox One
Oh btw why do you guys think that MS and many Kinect fans didn't want them to package Xbox One without it?
Because the large majority, probably 90%+, of users never modify or change their console. The argument say if it didn't come with the Xbox One then developers couldn't know that everyone would have a Kinect.
Most peripherals ate lucky to hit 5% to 10% penetration and another drive is a peripheral. And ps4 is even worse, and would be even less likely to be upgraded because the drive is internal and someone must actually do what is perceived to be technical work to replace it.
I'd be willing to bet about 98 or 99% of new-gen consoles out there right now are at exactly 500gb. And as long as that's the case digital downloads as a primary is a dead issue.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

The vast majority of people will never upgrade their hard drive. Especially if it's internal. If Sony and MS really had any faith or despite to see the industry go the digital route they would have offered another SKU with much more space.

Not every game is 50gb either, so this isn't the ace in the hole argument you seem to be making it out to be. You can install larger (24gb) Infamous like 18-20 times on the default drive, and not a lot of games are that big.
Physical or digital, the problems with hard drive size are identical, by the way. Only one just adds a convenience of being able to reinstall from other media rather than redownload.Last edited by mestevo; 12-03-2014, 04:28 PM.Comment

Re: Xbox One
You aren't getting my point, it's not about what you COULD do, it's about what the average consumers actual behavior is....
And I wasn't suggesting they should have replaced the 50ogb model w a larger hard drive but rather offered a 2 TB model alongside the 500gb model for those interested in going full digital for say... $79 or $99 more.
The fact that they didn't shows that they aren't very interested in going that route.. They simply don't believe, as I don't, that the average user is going to go digital is the reality..
As for not every game being 50gb, the fact is these machines were built to last for a 7 to 9 years so considering that 500gb was obviously not taking into account much, if any, digital downloads at all...Last edited by ODogg; 12-03-2014, 05:23 PM.Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

Whether or not they buy a game digitally or via physical media, they are going to have to create some space for the latest and greatest game. As I see it, they have 2 choices...increase their storage size or delete some older game installs. Just because you buy a game digitally, it doesn't mean you have to keep the game on your hard drive forever and they can be downloaded again.XBL & PSN: zasbury25Comment

Re: Xbox One
Regardless if it's a physical install or it's digital, it is the same size package and both sides are going to run into the storage obstacles you say are exclusive to digital only buyers. When the hard drive fills up for someone who is exclusively physical media, what are the "lazy and dumb" going to do then? Stop buying games? Throw their system away?

Then the only issue is redownloading games they want to play again. Sure most people don't want to wait 30 min up to a couple hours to download a new game they are exited to play, but if going back to a game that is a couple years old I wouldn't think it would be much of a bother. They'd have to delete disk games off anyways as they take the same amoutn of space. So looking at a little less time to install from disk. Problem with that? You can't play another disk based game while installing. Just have to wait it out. Where with a download you can do whatever you want while it is downloading.
Also have to mention, these average joe's who won't upgrade their system, at the same time, how many games is this person buying per year? 5? 10? more than enough to hold 1-3 years worth of games for this person.Comment
