    Re: Xbox One

It sounds terrible that your controller would recognize that it's not in use and use less battery? Alright...and Im talking about TV features in general. There are people who act like no one watches TV through their Xbox One, just as people are acting as if no one used Xbox Fitness. Yes, people use both.

And people I've talked to have different experiences with the posture correcting. As for the comment about the purpose of your purchase...whatever. If you buy a product to fulfill a need and then it no longer fills that despite the promise to, then you can be angry. And LOL at the priorities shifting, dear god.

I expect the fitness stuff was up for renewal the the ROI isn't there.

The fitness stuff was neat, but I personally always got more of a workout from the Dance Central-style games

I'm a horrible person and don't really work out, yet stay fairly skinny (with a bit of a belly now sadly)....

I don't think Xbox Fitness would really be the thing for me, I'd have to find time for a sport somewhere, but hard fitting that into life right now.

No, I actually misread your post as it would go into low battery mode accidentally on people. Which would suck, and I see why they would take that out if that's what it did.

I'm saying if I make a $500 dollar purchase of a video game console to use for fitness, and then get mad that the fitness goes away needing to rethink things is a bit off?

I don't buy a car, and then get mad I can't get the storage of a pickup truck out of it. Because it's a car. It's meant for doing car things.

The XBox One is a video game console. Meant for doing video game things.

            Re: Xbox One

I don't disagree, but MS advertised the console specifically as the One device you'll need in your living room. They tried to branch out to get a part of the Wii market, apparently it didn't work the way they intended, so they're pulling back on all of that stuff to bear down on the essentials. I agree with this approach, but a person buying the console at launch could look at the console now and see some significant differences in features promised. And this isn't just Xbox at this point, it's Windows 10, and Mobile. I think they made mistakes a few years ago and are trying to course correct now but it doesn't give confidence that they were so wrong on these things that this is the way they end up (launching a console without a Kinect port, cancelling fitness, cancelling the Xbox DVR feature, etc.)

But, at the time, MS was advertising it as not just a video game console. It was a media hub for your living room. A lot of people bought into that and invested in early machines because of the media features that it had. I think if MS decided tomorrow that they were just going to disable support for Kinect completely, you would have a few upset people. You actually see it in this thread with the voice command changes.

A more appropriate example would be if you bought a car and it was the only one in the market that could drive itself. One day, after you purchased upgrade packs for self driving, the manufacturer decided it was no longer interested in supporting self-driving and was going to disable it in all models because the licensing/technology/patent fees were too much. If you purchased existing upgrade packs for self driving, then sorry, but they won't function in a year.

I used the fitness stuff when I first got my Xbox, but like working out in general, I sometimes pick up something for a bit, but fail to stick with it. Fortunately, I never purchased content for it as I was still testing my interest at the time.

I don't think there will be many people affected by this, but I'm sure there will be a few that will put it on the list of things that have gone wrong with this launch. Another early adopter feature that has since been abandoned.

Not a great analogy since your car wasn't promised to have the storage of a truck when you bought it. Even though I agree with what MS is doing, the complaints are valid as well.

If you want to use your analogy, this would be more akin to buying a car promised to have lifetime GPS and XM Radio, only to then have both of those features removed.

Ubernoob: Debating the merits of Xbox Fitness specifically or as motivation for buying a console is all well and good --
                  Spoiler
-- but it's beside the point. The issue here is an all digital service where you had the option of buying digital content is being shut down with a 1 year time frame for you to continue to use said content that you paid for.

Yes, There was/is some free to use content in Xbox Fitness but there were also Xbox Fitness versions of workouts like Insanity that cost $10,$20, $60 that people bought but can now only stream for another 6 months or use for 12 if they choose to use the storage space to download them.

It's no different from buying a game digitally and then being told you don't really own it and in a year you wont be able to access it at all. While that eventuality is expected with the way things are going digtal, the possibility was one of the main worries prior to launch when the message was all digital. Also, no one would call this a reasonable timeline for someone who bought a workout last week with the expectation to be able to download it and use it as long as the One can get online.

Re: Poes Law - Yes i was serious but no don't find it to be an extreme (though it was definitely hot) take. With new systems on the horizon, I think it'd be foolish if this kind of decision didn't factor into my next choice as a consumer. Everyone has different aspects of these systems they like, who wants to worry about losing their paid for content just because that aspect was less popular?

Just wasn't sure. I see plenty of faux-outrage posts that straddle the line and it comes acreoss as hard to tell in text only format.

I used hyperbole and bad comparisons in mine. I totally get people being disappointed, I don't get being surprised or anything. It's a super niche service that (I'm assuming here, since it's what makes sense) didn't provide the RoI they were looking for. It happens to niche services all the time.

It's also one of the longest time periods I can remember for a service shutting down. Access to the stuff for a full year after the announcement seems much longer than I can remember other services that got shut down got. It's happened in games for years.

I feel bad for the people that used it and enjoyed it, but I don't feel bad for the people that are like "BUT THIS IS WHY I BOUGHT MY XBOX **** YOU MICROSOFT" if that makes any sense.

Edit: I suppose it comes from my view that video game consoles as... All-in-one type stuff, for lack of a better term, is stupid. I most likely may be in the minority on that, but that's where I come from. I buy a video game console to play video games. Anything extra it does is cool, but I'd never base my purchase on that.

See with the XBox One now. I refused to buy it until they dropped the Kinect, because I have zero need for it. I have no issue with the Kinect itself existing or getting whatever little support it gets, but it adds literally nothing for me outside of cost for something I wouldn't use. Time has also proven again and again that it's always "Buyer Beware" with any service-based product.

I'm fine with the service shutting down, and it makes sense IMO.

I do think it's ok that these boxes do more. I enjoy that I can use Amazon or Netflix through my One and not have to swap between a few streaming sticks or something like that. I'm really excited for the Windows apps on Xbox, I think that'll bring a lot of content to the box for little dev work

Yup. I can't play Madden currently. Ironically I've been tinkering with NHL 16 instead.

Edit: tried today and Madden worked. I was able to play (and lose -_-) the Super Bowl.

Looks like my console updated on 7/1. Think prior update was 6/27.
