I'm rethinking running my cable box (in this case satellite box, DirecTV) through my new Xbox One S. And here is why...

Having used the Xbox One now with my TV since day one here are the things I have found we realistically use it for in regards to controlling our TV.

1. Turn everything on and off, this can be used without the tv going through the Xbox one.. Also my new TV now can do this with CEC via the HDMI port. So this is sort of not an issue now.

2. Turn volume up and down, again this is something we use a lot but can be done without tv going through the Xbox One

3. Change the tv channels, we don't use this feature much, not sure if you need the Xbox one to have the tv connected to it or not though...we usually just use our remote to do this.

4. The Xbox Oneguide - great idea but we never used it and use the DirecTV guide instead..

So the best features of the Xbox one for controlling ones tv seems to be ones you can use without having your cable box running through it....thinking I may just keep my DirecTV going directly to my TV and run my Xbox One S directly to it as well and not mix them together.

What do you guys think? Does anyone really still use the Xbox One and Kinect to control their TV watching experience or am I one of the last few who does that?

So thanks to a deal and a discount code I got from a buddy I was able to order the Xbox One S 1TB Halo Wars 2 bundle and it'll end up costing me $266 total. I'll also be getting a $100 gift card.

I have sold my Xbox One to a buddy for $150 so basically it won't cost me much at all to upgrade.

This will help space wise as well as I am going to use the $100 gift card to get an external 2TB drive. So I will then have 3TB of space versus what I have now which is 1.5TB.

Nice. And when Scorpio comes out, all you really need to do is get back $116 to break even between the base Xbox One that you sold and the Slim you just bought. Not counting the gift card because the external 2TB hard drive that you're using would be used for Scorpio.

You should hold off though on that if possible. If Scorpio supports SSD completely and actually makes full use of the damn thing, that might be a better move.

Either way, enjoy the Slim as it's one sweet console.

It sounds like a great idea, but for me it's going to depend on the titles in the program, and how long they're in the program for. If it's on the service for 30 days only, then they rotate, to me there's no point.

Yeah, they'll need to establish a norm for that, or some good communication about the titles entering/leaving. I expect the bulk of the library to be the same all the time and just a few to shuffle in/out any given month.

I don't think we'll see 100 titles entering/leaving frequently or anything. Also some of us will have the bulk of the offerings because really I think this will be an extension of Games with Gold, a way to offer some of those games again without duplicating them in the monthly freebie offerings.

Nice. And when Scorpio comes out, all you really need to do is get back $116 to break even between the base Xbox One that you sold and the Slim you just bought. Not counting the gift card because the external 2TB hard drive that you're using would be used for Scorpio.

Yeah, I still want the Scorpio but may have to hold out now for sure as my wife will not like me upgrading again so soon (as in she may want to murder me in my sleep, LOL). So I will probably wait until like this time next year when I get my tax return and get Scorpio then instead of getting it at Christmas like the original plan was.

I also need to see what super-duper games there will be to incentivize me getting a Scorpio, Crackdown has never appealed that much to me and it'll take a little more to get me excited on the software side.

Hoping maybe a nice red themed collectors edition Scorpio will be out in 2018 that I could get to match my game room, that'd be sweet! Gears of War 5 or something? Lol...

...So while I agree with you that it's a #firstworldproblem let's also not excuse it when it's a valid issue. Microsoft most certainly does need to address it with a simple "select all" option in a future update.

Well personally I would have rather had external support for the past 2.5+ years than have a bulk transfer tool for the very few times it would ever be needed...which still less of a hassle than the old process of installing a new internal drive, installing the OS, re-downloading/installing every single game manually. And I would figure that bulk copy process only came around because there was no external support at the time :wink:

Though you are right - you have external drives, you have the ability to copy or move to other hard drives, to other consoles, etc. The disappointing thing is that they have the process to move stuff, so they don't need to introduce/develop something new. JUST ADD A BULK SELECT!

Well personally I would have rather had external support for the past 2.5+ years than have a bulk transfer tool for the very few times it would ever be needed...which still less of a hassle than the old process of installing a new internal drive, installing the OS, re-downloading/installing every single game manually. Well that's definitely a very valid criticism of Sony, they were really stupid when it came to taking so long to add external, and technically the public owning PS4 who aren't in a beta still do not have external.

I didn't look at that as bad I think because as a former computer repair guy the idea of opening something up and replacing a hard drive was kind of exciting. Tagging and copying files individually not so much LOL.

I do see there's a request for it on the Microsoft forums, to add a bulk select, so I'm sure MS is aware of it and we will see it down the road, probably right after I upgrade and do all my stuff no doubt...

but at the same time (like my comparison to the ps4 transfer)...by the time i got the program downloaded, got it set up, got the hard drive formatted on the xbox, connected to the pc, clicked around to find the right menu items, click transfer and whatnot....I could have had everything selected to move going through the xbox. Might have saved a few minutes, but eh could introduce issues I need to research and fix (reminds me of action replay lol)

No reason to stop using it, the turning on and off all at once is nice...a universal remote could do that too, but we have a few cable remotes we got at goodwill scattered around, we tend to lose cable remotes, or my son knocks them on the ground and they risk breaking.

I do hear you that it's probably not used as much as we intended.

Yeah, thanks man, I will check this out but I may just end up moving only certain games and keeping my old SSHD drive for Fallout and a few others.

my new TV actually turns everything on and off through the CEC function so that's one that i don't need as much anymore...
