I just checked this and honestly, it's the first time I have ever seen Best Buy offer more than GameStop when it comes to consoles. The few times I traded in a PS4 and Xbox One, the value was always much better at GameStop which is why I always traded in the console to them instead of Best Buy. Right now, the base PS4 is at $72 cash/$90 credit for GameStop and still at $120 credit at Best Buy.

It's just funny because every time I traded in a base PS4/Xbox One, I would always get a higher amount from GameStop. Back in 2014/2015 before PS4 dropped in price, GameStop was giving $400/$350 for the console. We'll see if this stays the same or changes as the year goes on.

Possibly due to GameStop's recent low earnings and stock drop this past year... But who knows.

Game Stop tried to knock off $50 from what was advertised for a console trade in last year when I traded my launch-day 500gb for a new 1tb.

The guy couldn't understand why I was trading in 1 Xbox for another and got all pissed off for some reason. I pretty much told him that was total BS, as there was nothing wrong with my console. After saying I was headed to another store he gave me full credit.

Possibly due to GameStop's recent low earnings and stock drop this past year... But who knows.

GameStop is going to transition to a board gaming store. At some point they are going to put the brakes on trade-ins.

They'd probably just shut down in many markets if they did that. We have 8 Gaming Goat locations opening in Vegas and have a number of other board game shop's and Gamespot would probably have a hard time competing with their 30% off MSRP on new products.

Well, it's not if. The pivot is coming. Retail video game revenue is dropping. The move to digital is hammering them from both ends, as even the supply of used games will decrease. And sales like Xbox and Sony are having isn't helping.

Now, the move may fail, but its kind of their only shot as staying viable. Regardless, you will probably find their investment in video games dropping steadily. That why it doesn't surprise me that their trade-in offers have been reduced.

True, you can already see them shotgunning pop culture stuff as they have a corner or more of their store now covered in statues and other gaming items that their current clients don't buy (the bulk of that stuff seems to be on clearance all the time already too).

Yeah and they also seem to be doing a lot more trade-ins/promotions on electronics. They always push tablets, smartphones, etc. whenever I'm in there and on the website.

If you think about it, it's kinda the same thing that happened with Blockbuster and Netflix.

I'm in Canada at the moment and all the EB Games here have done a whole re-branding and now they are pushing more pop culture stuff as you mention in addition to trading cards.
