Also, if you haven't seen the specs on the technology we have, I'll fill you in. Right now, some PS3 games run at 60 FPS, most run at 30. I say PS3 cause that's what I have. In the future the minimal FPS rate for the PS4 would be 120. Also, some PS3 games have full 1080p, all PS4 games will have it. Those two things alone will account for a huge amount of detail and realism to be implemented in games. And we do not have the power to do that Unreal Engine 3. That is designed for the next-gen systems. Our current systems couldn't handle it.

      Forget the graphics

This gen of failed game play patches galore gimped additions because of multiple skus with no hdds and equipment failure....graphics isn't as high on my list as last time

1080p 3D with 120fps will be the advertisement without question but once again it will fall short.

3D capable, along with the 120, but that won't be every game, would be a waste.

Forget 120 fps, let's get 60 fps a standard for all games with 1080p where everything runs smooth before thinking about pushing 120 fps. Look at how many games this generation try to push 60 fps and can't even do it right. I'm pretty happy with graphics this generation and if they can bring them up a notch to start off next generation great. Where I want to see improvements is with the A.I., addition of dynamic commentary to sports games like what is being done with NBA2K franchise but across all sports titles, and a smooth less integration of all products into one infrastructure like what MSFT seems to be doing.

The discernable difference between 30 fps and 60 fps is MUCH larger than 60 fps and 120 fps, IMO.

I'd rather have a smooth, steady 60 then have devs trying to push for 120.

Seriously, a very small percentage of games are 60fps this generation (we had more in the previous generation) and some that claim they are, can't even hold it consistently. Also, there's a bunch of games that are sub-HD. 1080p @120fps is a pipe dream for next-generation and sadly, I doubt 60fps will be a standard either.

I guess with technology improving there is a desire for new consoles.

I'm pretty happy with my ps3, the graphics are nice and it plays all my Blu rays. I have no desire for theany pointless features that xbox live have and would probably wait several years after to get a PS4

I'd be shocked if Sony announced something... hasn't the PS3 finally hit its stride? Microsoft, on the other hand, I fully expect to hear from. Even if Sony does announce the PS4, I don't expect it until a year after the next Xbox...

I think 2012 is too soon, but I would not be surprised if the next XBOX came out in 2013--I think Sony is going to be the "last" to the party again. Companies have learned from the $600 price point on entry-level systems, anyway, but I'm sure deluxe models in the next gen will see that mark. The problem is wanting to push technology forward while at the same time keeping the price in that magical $300 or so range. It just doesn't seem realistic yet.

As others have already said, the next-gen of consoles will have to meet pretty hefty demands in terms of performance. 60 FPS will have to be a minimum standard at 1080P, along with more 3D integration. I saw a tech demo somewhere (unfortunately I can't remember), but it seems we are getting close to photo-realistic graphics. Mind you these were side-by-side stills, but it was impossible to tell which was which. The problem is these applications are likely limited to high-end PC gaming at present, so console applications of this nature are likely years away.

Still there is plenty of room for games to grow away from just enhanced graphical capabilities. Enhancing the detail in games, sports games in particular, has nearly unlimited potential. As it is games hardly take up a quarter of the space on a blu-ray--I think the current tech limits what developers can add despite there being plenty of hard space. I would expect next-gen applications will take full advantage of larger included hard-drives and perhaps even dual-layer blu-rays.

All that said, the PS3 did come out while the PS2 continued to sell and have games developed. 2016 hits the ten year cycle, but I imagine Sony comes out in 2014 with their next console.

I'm personally looking forward to sports games with integrated "live shots" and brand-new gameplay engines with integrated physics.

That video is pretty much a waste.

Current tech can do that all day every day with a pre-rendered movie. Even "In-game" would not be super impressive. Crysis was released in 2007 and rivals those graphics IN-GAME for high end PC's.

                            <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JaY8N5anyzw?hd=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Like everyone has been saying, CPU AI, better frame rates, more ram for faster/no load times, more customization, etc are all way more important than high end graphics.

I also find the biggest short comings of new consoles is that launch releases always suck and are very slim in choice. You need developers to have at least 2 years with the hardware/software to develop a 20+ game launch inventory.

Until we see consoles with the power to create in-game footage that CGI movies use. I don't see a huge draw for "slightly better" graphics.

For instance this is all fully CGI rendered. In-game footage this great would be worth experiencing.

In-game animations need to see a large jump in next gen technology.

Physics need to be a requirement in new technology.
