Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Including a monitor? $2k can build you a nice rig.
I know building is daunting, but YouTube is a wonderful resource. If you take your time building and watching, it's not as hard as it seems. And in the end, you'll be much better off.
Not trying to talk you out of it. I just always try to talk friends or whomever into building their own, when the subject comes up.

So if I do build, how does this look. Just put a cheapish card in there until the 3000 series comes out.

At a quick glance it looks good! Leaves you plenty of room in your budget for an upgraded card later. And cards hold their resale value, so you'll be able to recoup some.So if I do build, how does this look. Just put a cheapish card in there until the 3000 series comes out.

I'd personally look into a standard sized MB. And not sure on case dimensions, bit keep in mind the beefier cards are bigger - just don't want to be stuck where the GPU you eventually want doesn't fit.
There are other avenues to buying your OS. Just something to keep in mind if you're trying to stretch your dollar.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I personally wouldn’t get that mini you originally had, over $300 for a motherboard is too high for my taste, most of that is because it’s a mini.Would this one be better? https://www.newegg.com/asus-tuf-gami...xRA5S0JHULSleQ
When searching for a motherboard, while you do not want to cheap out, you also don’t need to go that high. The best thing when looking at motherboards and to read their capabilities for ports and performance. Does it contain things you want? (Enough USB ports, WiFi adapter (I would go hard wired), etc)
The one above would be a much wiser decision.
Edit::
Looking at your build.. do NOT pay $109 for Windows 10. Do you have a Windows 7/8 key? I know you used to have a computer. If not, tons of cheaper ways you can get it for almost nothing. Technically, you could even install it for free with minor limitations.
You could also go a little cheaper on your CPU cooler unless you’re dead set on that one.
I use a $50 arctic cooler that is the top line and one of the best coolers around.

I’m only offering this stuff because between your motherboard swap, not paying that for Windows and going with a top end fan cooler, you’d save around $350 and could just get a top end video card instead of buying cheap and then upgrade to a newer card when released, less hassle IMO.Last edited by TheBleedingRed21; 05-15-2020, 07:48 AM.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
I have a Geforce RTX 2060 in the mail that should arrive early next week. It (or something like it) was always going to be sort of an addition to the cost of my current PC, but I wanted to get as much mileage out of the 1060 as I could before needing to replace it. As a 1080p monitor user I should be set with this for the next several years, and it does have some 1440p capability in case I want to upgrade that monitor at some point. I know there's a visible difference between 1080 and 1440 even on a mid 20-inch monitor like mine, but right now I'm just glad it means I don't have to venture into the truly expensive cards. 1080p at 60 FPS still looks perfectly fine to me.Comment

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
The new Steam event makes for a somewhat interesting discussion: What are your three oldest Steam games?
I bet I'm not the only one with this combo:
Counter-Strike (1.6)
Team Fortress Classic
Day of Defeat
All Half-Life mods.

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread
Im looking forward to upgrading to a 3080ti myself. Im going to forgoe PS5 and Xbox at launch and use my funds to get a new graphics card. Right now i have a Powercolor Red Devil 5700XT but am not too happy with AMD's drivers and some of the crashes i have on occasion. I will be going back to Nvidia once the 3080ti's drop. Looking forward to preordering the card when it is available.Just ordered this build. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/ScottM816/saved/fQMYgs
