While I've not had the exact same issues you are describing, I've dealt with the same kind of frustrating things. I'm not a networking expert, but there are entire communities online of people who are experts with this stuff. I did a quick search with your router model and found these 4 threads. Maybe one of these communities or threads can help?

Hi, I have a PC wired (CAT5e) to mi modem on another room, with that I get this internet results:     I wanted to extend my wifi so I bought the AX3000, pluged it to the same cable I had my PC, and then wired my PC to the router (

While studbucket provided the constructive answer, I'll say personally that's about when I start replacing stuff unless for some reason you're really dedicated to your investment in your current setup.

I went overboard and my home network is all Unifi, certainly not for everyone (though I've heard a lot of good things about their AmpliFi products).

Re: OS Steam and Computer Gaming Thread

Now that the evening is here I've been playing around with it and I think it may be more of an issue on the ISP side of things. I'm running it right now with the desktop plugged directly into the wall port bypassing the router and the ping is higher than normal, 30-40 range, so not as high as the 80+ the router config gives when issues arise, but still much higher than the 3-5 I get when things are going smooth. However, the download speeds are only around 250 with the upload speeds staying right around 50-55.

Earlier in the day both the setup with the router and without were giving me <5 ping, 990+ download, and 95+ upload every time. Now that it is peak time and people are home it seems the ISP is having issues that they didn't have before providing a consistent and smooth service. I'm assuming I'll have to reach back out to them.

Edit: I am just testing through speedtest.net and also going into Valorant and checking what the server connections are showing as. They're still a bit higher than normal. When things are going smooth my ping is 20 or less with the eastern servers and around 55 or less with the central servers, and around 80 with the west coast servers. Right now even bypassing the router the pings are about 20ms higher than normal.

And I have the router plugged back in and the ping is constantly 50+ while the download speeds are varying like crazy between 80-250 and the upload speeds are varying from 15-90.

It's as if the ISP is having issues also and then when the router is involved it compounds this issues?

After a week of tinkering, the beast is finished. I opted not to put RGB on the water cooler due to that cooler is NZXT and their RGB don't work well with ICue which is what everything else use. And at the time of ordering parts, Corsair had zero AIOs in stock that worked with the 12900K socket.

It does look great. Needs a few more monitors and it's set.

Speaking of monitors, I got monitor mounts for Christmas and do I love them. I didn't think they would make as big of a difference as they do, but I don't ever want to go back to having my monitor standing on the desk. The mobility, the desk space, it's amazing.

I recommend anyone who has thought about monitor mounts to go ahead and pull the trigger.

I've began doing speed tests every 30 min and my router automatically documents them. I've done this the past few days now and there is a clear window each day between 8 and 11 pm that the internet is diving off of a cliff.

I'm hoping I can present the log to the ISP and see where that goes.

Unfortunately, these are the worst kind of issues to get fixed. Your ISP won’t take you seriously and also won’t be able to see your issues during the problem time.

In the past I’ve downloaded PingPlotter and let that run all day. Ideally, the results would be able to tell you something. In addition, it should also give you something to present to your ISP. When this has happened to me in the past, the causes have been kind of interesting. In one case, traffic was being rerouted at 6pm to a segment that made no sense. In another case, a router downstream was breaking down, exhausting all of its resources at a specific time at night because of some nightly process causing slow downs.

Thank you for recommending Ping Plotter. I'll look into that.

I created an excel sheet out of the logs from the speed tests and it is clear as day the internet is having issues at a set time each night.

I'll continue to track it and use Ping Plotter and maybe together they can help get this solved. My net had been amazing until these issues began happening. I'd like to think the ISP and I can get it back to how it was before or else I may have to change providers if possible.

Have you tried running a M-Lab speed test (https://speed.measurementlab.net)? Their tests are more advanced and offer a glimpse into the normal data, plus the added benefit of seeing your retransmission rate. This number (as a percentage) tells you how often packets have to be re-sent to complete a web request. Ideally, you want a retransmission rate as close to zero as possible. Mine hovers between 0.02% - 0.05%.

M-Labs is more trust worthy than other sites because it's open source, all their data is public, and it's the most trusted speed test by governments, academic researchers, etc. You can read more about the details here: https://www.measurementlab.net/. Think of it like the Consumer Reports of internet speed test since they aren't paid by advertisers like ISPs.

I would run the M-Lab test multiple times during the day and ramp up the testing during the problem hours you have identified. See if you get more insight (high retransmission rate, etc.).

I hadn't heard of them. I'll take advantage of that also. I have had Ping Plotter running since I got home from work and got to see in real time when the issues started at the the normal time frame they begin showing up. I'll have to take a closer look at it when I'm back at the PC, but it was interesting to see where the changes in quality happened during the route.

Edit: As long as I'm reading this right it's evident where the issue is occurring.

Good to know. I got it on PS4 at release but didnt put much time in. Just bought on steam last night, looking to jump in tonight and hoping having it on PC I can be a little more focused and not drop it after 10 hours or so.

Sony giving that away on PS5 helped curb any FOMO PC purchases fortunately. It looks great.
