    Re: PlayStation 4 Discussion

Any Samsung owners experience stuttering and frame rate issues when playing PS4. Purchased a new TV last night and decided to throw The Show on for a second since this particular set will be used for video games 99.9% of the time. Game looked phenomenal except for frame rate and stuttering problems when the ball was in play. I didn't try any other games because TNF was about to start so I'm not sure if it's strictly The Show related.

Hoping for an easy fix as I'm no good with electronics.

Did you put the tv in Game Mode ? That most likely was the problem not having it in game mode.

No I did not. Game mode makes that big a difference? Never had to use it before with previous TV sets.

Depending on the TV refresh rate, yes.

TVs with high refresh rates (120Hz, and 240Hz [<-- most notable here]) cause varying amounts of input lag, because the games will never run higher than 60 FPS and for the higher refresh rate TVs they have to add processing effects in creating the lag.

Game mode just basically kicks the TV back down to 60Hz (which, outside of 3D usage, anything over 60Hz is basically a waste at this point anyways.)

I use Game Mode for everything, because all the higher refresh rates do is give everything that ****ty "Soap Opera effect" that makes everything look absolutely terrible.

Not overly impressed by what I saw. Way more excited for Witcher 3.

It's so complicated and got twisted so much it's hard to know what is going on with this. My TV is 120hz, but one of the reasons I didn't want to go 60hz is because film is shot in 24 frames per second and 120 is a multiple of that and 60 is not. 60 is a multiple of 30 (29.97) that regular TV is in or 60i - 120 is also a multiple of both of those. So at the time my understanding was that a 120hz TV could handle film cleaner/better than a 60hz tv.

Now, my first HD TV didn't have a hz value that anyone paid attention to. It was a Westinghouse 720p TV that gave you a refresh rating in TIME measurments, something like 8ms.

Newer TV's handle a good amount of processing and Game Mode removes those to cut down on the refresh rate/response time/lag ... so if your input lag was 25ms, putting in game might take it down to 10ms...

This makes it seem more complicated than it did in earlier generations of HD TV's.

I tried game mode on my TV for BF4 on xbox one, and can't really say it made a difference to me other than I noticed my TV handling of colours was worse as well as contrast and brightness. Not enough that it looked "terrible" but enough that I switched it back.

I think to benefit you need to be a pro level, and if that is the case you already own a gaming monitor that you sit 2 feet away from. I'd rather it look better and lose maybe 1 in 30 gun fights than win that one fight and have the image look washed out or tinted wrong 100% of the time.

Untrue, because DVDs and BRs are either 30 or 60 FPS (30 progressive, 60 interlaced.) They use 2:3 pulldown to achieve that - so while the source *is* 24 FPS, the actual blu-ray isn't.

All the refresh rate does is add in frames that aren't there to make it seem smoother (the "Soap Opera Effect.")

It's a bit different for games and movies, again. On a movie it's... "less" work processing. It can easily read ahead because it's "unchanging." It knows which frames will come in which order, it's set.

For games? It has to add in the frames, but it's not set. What if I want to look left? Well, I hit left on the right stick. It now has to wait to see the frames that will be drawn. This is where the input lag comes in. It waits for the frames to appear, then draws the future frames in once it gets the information - it doesn't have the future information on hand because you are controlling it.

That's literally all the TVs with 120/240Hz are doing. Processing and displaying frames that don't technically exist on the media.

I know for my TV, Game Mode has it's own separate settings so once I switched I had to calibrate it again. Probably different for every TV known to man, though, knowing how these companies work.

Yeah, picture quality took a hit after switching to Game Mode. No biggie as I planned to calibrate the set next week. Like your TV, each HDMI input can be calibrated separately. Thanks for the help.

Yeah, I got the fantasy one as well. I really like the ornateness of the crafting table, furnace, and storage chests.
