Cost reduction. You take something that's quite obviously geared towards the high end audio market, remove it (there's still the Neo for those folks), and save $2 off the final cost. Doesn't seem like much, but you figure they probably plan to sell another 30 million of these at least, that's 60 million bucks.

Personally I think the slim is more of a lateral move to the standard PS4, 5mhz wifi is nice if you need it, but the space savings is bogus, things like this the footprint is what really matters. "If this PS4 was only 3/4 of an inch shorter I could cram something on top of it in my TV stand" said no one with a brain, ever.

So there was something about the slim having a 500 GB and also a 1 TB version to. If that is true could the 500 GB be 250 and the 1 TB 300? Then maybe the NEO will have also a 500 GB and 1 TB and maybe those will be 400 and 450?

        I'm thinking the following -

        $200 PS4 Slim 500GB / Base PS4 500GB (price drop)
        $250 PS4 Slim 1TB / Base PS4 1TB (price drop)
        $300 PS4 Slim 2TB

$400 PS4 Neo 500GB (this is what im hoping for the most)
        $450 PS4 Neo 1TB
        $500 PS4 Neo 2TB

Granted, the $200 is highly unlikely but if Sony is going with three storage bundles, it makes sense plus shows that Neo is $200 better than the base/slim PS4. One more week to go and we'll all know.

Yeah I dont think we are going to see 200. I dont think Sony is going to go from 350 down to 200 just like that. That would be a 150 price drop. I dont think any one has ever dropped a price of a system by more then like 100 with just one price drop. If they did a 250 that would be a 100 drop. If they did have a 200 it would sale like crazy. You think they would maybe go up to a 2 TB hard drive on ps4 slim? I am not sure if they are going to go up to that big but Microsoft did so who knows. When it comes to the NEO I think 450 price at most. I dont think Sony would want to go a whole 100 more then ps4 was at first. I am hoping for a 2tb NEO at 400 my self but yeah I dont know if that would happend.

The PS4 Slim is for those who have not purchased a PS4 yet this generation or purchased one and later sold it and hasn't purchased it back yet and prefer a cheap option.

As for the optical port, it's not a major issue or big deal and here's why - like Colin Moriarty said on the Kinda Funny Gamescast that was 40 minutes about the Slim. Sony like all the companies go by metrics and all this other data to determine what's being used and by how many people. The optical port isn't being used by enough to justify keeping it in the Slim. Out of 45m users, even if it's 10m, still not worth it because it's the minority and the Slim is all about cutting costs and saving Sony money, period.

Those who already own a PS4 and use the optical port have no reason whatsoever to buy the Slim so this doesn't affect them. For new buyers, it's all about the price point. A cheaper Slim will appeal to them and even if some of those new users wanted to use the optical port, chances are they will just say screw it because they're saving money. And for the minority that do want it, they'll most likely have the rest of the year to purchase a base PS4 which is almost certain to get a massive price drop as it would make no sense to keep it at $350.

I don't use any headsets at all so quite honestly, the optical port doesn't apply to me. In general, Sony's message is do you want to save more money which can be spent on games or do you want to spend more money on a port that you may or may not use?

The Xbox One Slim removed the Kinect port because like the optical port is used by so few that it honestly, just doesn't pay to keep it. Plus, Microsoft has phased out Kinect but if the metrics showed the majority using it, I can guarantee that they wouldn't have removed it.

You can dislike the removal of the optical port but it makes sense for Sony as a company. Majority don't use it and removing it cuts down the cost even more which is the entire point of the slim.

Besides, slim models do this all the time. Every slim model has always removed at least one meaningless and useless port in order to cut down the costs and save the company money.

PS2 Slim removed a few ports if I remember correctly including the HDD expansion port because few (including me) people used it or cared about it. Even as one of the few who used it, I didn't even care because it's not major issue. Neither is the removal of the optical port.
You really believe that Sony removed it because nobody uses it? Lol

Dude they removed it so people who want a fully functional ps4 spends money on the neo. They have no choice because either you buy the cheap lower quality slim or give us more money for neo.

There are plenty of ps3 and xb1 owners who have no ps4 and might want to wait for a huge price drop to jump. They got one but missing a huge portion of the gaming experience for audio. No worries Sony says we made the neo for you.

The kinect port was removed but that is not as important to gamers as optical. Also ms gave users the option to still use it. Sony did not

I wanted the ps4 slim but not anymore if I can't use my headsets

So Sony lost a sale with me on a slim

Wow no optical in the ps4 slim? That's the only way I get 5.1 on my ps4 for movies. Good thing I'm not going slim. My ps4 is beautiful the way it is and I accept it's body.

I really enjoy Prominence Poker. You would think that it would be easy to make this type of game, but most of them leave a lot to be desired. This one has a lot of charm to it - good freebie. It appears there's only 6-player tables at the moment. I'm fine with that, but hopefully they add 9-player down the line as well.

or stick to using walmart brand headphones and use the 3.5 mmj on the slim because it is at a low price. I hate that message

The slim for ms rebranded them but they kept the gaming ports used by many and added features to entice those with 4K tvs

I have no issue with Sony releasing the slim but not by stopping the vanilla and forcing people to buy a neo to get the features they expect.
The Xbox One S removed the Kinect port; Cortana and/or voice prompt users would view that as a step back.

Once again you're thinking the minority is the majority. The loss of the optical port sucks for a very small percentage, the same as the loss of the Kinect port sucks for a very small percentage. The average consumer is not using a $200-300 headset dependent on the optical port. It is what it is. Both slimmer systems have more than enough tradeoff to justify the decisions made.

That's exactly the other thing. It's not like everyone HAS to "upgrade" to the slim just because it's being released, lol. If you already have a PS4 and want to keep that optical port then just keep things operating as is. Down the line, when the Neo releases and you feel the upgrade is worth of your attention, then there ya go.

Again, a $249 slim isn't being targeted to the hardcore crowd. It's a PS4 with incremental improvements that most anyone can afford. It replaces the OG that currently resides on the shelves, but it doesn't have to replace the one in your living rooms at this time. It's a great sell for new buyers though.

HITMAN: The Complete First Season gets a retail disc release on January 31st, 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. January is looking packed which is very rare and the early 2017 is stacked barring any delays.

Yeah, I do believe it because that's how the slim models have always worked. Ports that are barely used have always been removed. It's a cost cutting move, plain and simple. How many people do you truly believe use the optical port? And more importantly, for those who are using it and already have a PS4, there's no reason for any of them to buy a Slim PS4.

Consumers who want the optical port can just go buy a current base PS4 or wait another week for the pretty much guaranteed price drop. Or they can wait for Neo. These consumers have options. They can always buy a used PS4 once the price drops and not even give Sony a sale if they feel that strongly about it.

So because there's no optical port which was the majority didn't even look at let alone use, the slim model is lower quality? I guess that means that old bulky PS2 was high quality just because it had the HDD port yet I loved the PS2 super slim a billion times more and was super sweet.

Neo is for those who already own a PS4 like some here and want more visuals and performance. For those who don't have a PS4 and really want the optical port of all things, they can buy a Neo which will be an upgraded version of the base PS4. Or again, they could just buy a current base PS4.

Also, it hasn't been confirmed that the optical port is even in Neo. It's definitely possible that Sony has removed it completely. Probably not but it's possible.

Yeah, Microsoft gave the consumers the option as long as want to spend an extra $20 to use an obsolete dead add-on. Point is that neither one is used as much as you may think they are and that's why they were removed.

Okay, see this is just bullcrap. You buying a slim PS4? Why would you buy a slim PS4 when Neo will be a few weeks later? What are you going to do? Swap the base for the slim and the slim for Neo? That's just a waste of money. Even if you're a millionaire, why would you do that? That makes no sense. Besides, even if the slim PS4 had an optical port, you're still wasting money on swapping. Sorry but I truly don't see the point.

I have no interest in the slim PS4. It's either I stay with the base PS4 or I upgrade to PS4 Neo. As much as I disagree with Sony in regards to Neo, I have let it go because I can't stop it so why go nuts about it? And hell, if I get a good trade in deal and end up getting it for $100 or even $50, that would be awesome.

I let the entire Neo thing go and you should let the optical port thing go. It all comes down to putting your money where your mouth is. If you don't want to buy the slim PS4 because of the missing optical port, then don't buy it.

I was going to do the same with PS4 Neo but screw it, chances are that im going to get it for a good price and I have my Xbox One Slim and may buy a 4KTV on Black Friday so I figure why not? Either do the same or just stay with the base PS4.

Either do the same or just stay with the base PS4.
your first line would hold more weight with me if there was no NEO coming.

Last gen 360 and PS3 had 3 models released. The second was the slim for both and it contained the port. The 3rd and final one was released to get a lower price and get some last few sales before it ended.

This gen is all but 3 years old and if the PS4 ends with 45 million world wide it would not be considered great compared to ps2 and ps3

so they still have a huge chunk of people they can sell to. But removing the port gave those customers no choice but to spend MORE MONEY on the NEO even if they would be content on slim due to price but at the cost of getting a stripped down version of what the vanilla had.

optical port is also not just for headphones, it is also used by many who use sound bars with just optical ports or even av sets up that with optical allows them to set up systems with their av hardware.

I do not believe for one second that sony remove the port because nobody used it. That is not the case 3 years into a cycle. They did it because they are using the Don Matrick tactic

We have a 450 NEO if you want an optical port.
