Video games are a short market, in that it trends. You should strike when the iron is hot. Right now it doesn't get any hotter and they should have product in the store for anyone that wants one.

It's really stupid they don't. And it's even more stupid if they think it's a good thing.
They think it's a good thing, because that's how they have run their business for years. They've been around and successful since 1889.

Look at the most successful console launches. Look at how the Wii U sold.

The WiiU (from November 18, 2012 until December 31, 2012) sold roughly ~3 million units. The PS4 (from November 15, 2013 until December 28, 2013) sold roughly 4 million.

Just over a month later (Feb 8, 2014 for PS4) the PS4 had sold 5.3 million. The Wii U, in double that time (March 31, 2013) had sold 3.45 million. The Wii U tanked hard, and you want to blame Nintendo for playing it safe with another console loss? Any console made and not sold is dead cost for Nintendo. There's a method behind their madness.

That's why they are running a business that could operate on a loss for 40-50 years and still have money in the bank, and we are here complaining on a message board. Yes, it sucks if people can't get one - but if they want one they will. Switches aren't hard to find at all.

PS4's and Xbox Ones were not as difficult to get, they had a larger supply and refilled orders quicker. I do recall PS4s had a bit of a spell where they were difficult to find but anyone that wanted one could have preordered. For this preorders sold out immediately, not weeks.

Bottom line, the other companies may sell out and their products may be hard to find at times but they don't do that by design. It seems Nintendo does as that's how they want it to be. That's the difference. And it's silly.

Not having a lot at launch is one thing, not getting them restocked and having people be able to buy them after the initial demand at launch dies down is another. And if you want to look at the history of Nintendo you can do so and see that they've been declining for years. This ain't the 1980's and Nintendo isn't the only game in town anymore.

Like I said, you guys seem to frame it as if this is not by Nintendo's choice to have a dearth of consoles. It's by design more than anything else as a way to make their console appear ultra premium. It really doesn't.

It just causes them to sell less when the getting is good is all it does.
If I decide "hey that Nintendo Switch looks cool, I just got paid, I'm going to go buy one at Walmart" and I can't then I may just end up buying something else or nothing at all.

Nintendo really cannot afford to be missing out on sales when they're such a distant third to Sony and Microsoft. I know you guys look at Nintendo and see a huge juggernaut that will always make consoles but nothing is guaranteed. They answer to their shareholders like anyone else.

          Re: Nintendo Switch Discussion

The Wii U was a total and complete failure and disaster but you could see that Switch was going to be HOT at launch even after that horrible presentation in January and Nintendo has failed to deliver in regards to having supply meet demand.

The funny thing is that if you don't have the supply to meet the demand, the demand eventually goes elsewhere. Even if Nintendo had 10M consoles available by early April, it wouldn't matter if they didn't sell out immediately because they would eventually as the weeks pass by.

I'm hoping to pick one up next Friday when MK8 comes out since im expecting Best Buy to have them in stock. If not, eventually, I'll get one. On the positive side, I know that with Switch, my backlog will be non-existent. LOL.

You're reasoning is wrong, is what I'm saying.

They don't do "shortages" to make their console appear "ultra premium."

They do it because that's a healthy way for them to run their business. It's like that with everything. The 3DS for Black Friday sales? They're not gonna over produce them, those were a pain in the *** to find. It's just how they run their business. 2 million consoles at launch is nothing to sneeze at, you act like there was only 100,000 consoles to go out across the entire world.

I went to two stores today and saw multiple Switches in stock at both places.

I just looked online for Wal-Marts even an hour away. Plenty in stock there.

            Spoiler

At least wait 8 days to see the full account of Switch sales before you proclaim it to be dead in the water already.

                    but the fact remains

Nintendo launched at least 2 million units as a first run. Out of maybe about half of those were pre orders im gathering so that left 1 million for ppl JUST waltzing in and grabbing the limited extras each store got after pre orders etc.

With many ppls thinking of "Oh i should just walk in and buy one" would mean that like every store would have to get something like 100 extra units...

No store No company has ever done that not with pairs of one jean a shoe or even refrigerators its moreso a stock and see thing

Much easier for companies to say we'll have more or we're getting more from nintendo soon than stockpiling all that merch and it not selling....

A few things first how do we know that only half of the 2 million where in preorders? Considering a lot of places didn't even have any on launch day I would be surprised if only half where preorder. Second even if that is true it was said there would only be like that first batch for the whole like first month. That would mean then that between march 3 and end of the month there would only be those 1 million. 1 million divided by 28 days means around 35714 per day and considering that is WW and during the first month of a new system when people want it the most that is nothing. 3erd we are at April 19th and things have not really chanced which makes me thing that the 2 million number has still not went up much even 19 days later. I understand not wanting to have something just sit in stores and that it can be hard to judge demand which I think is part of why all systems tend to sale out at least in the first month but the fact that we are 19 days after the end of its first month and things have not gotten any better is pathetic and when you combined that with the fact it was/has been impossible to find a NES mini to for 5 months or so I can tell why people are mad and NES was even worse as it sold out and so few where made I have not only not seen it in stock once but there was no option to even per order the darn thing.

Nintendo does hurt them self because it is true that if you don't meet demand that business could go some where else but its not about if something will eventually sale or not. Say you make 10 million of something and at first it only sales 4 million by the time that other 6 million starts to sale it may be cheaper to make the product now then it was during the time those other 6 million where just sitting in a store.

Sorry but having a product that consumers would like to purchase and not having it available is not a healthy way to do business. I think their consistent inability to judge consumer demand is a huge business flaw. We'll have to agree to disagree.

Nintendo really is successful because they have such a core, great product at the heart of it all. They aren't successful because of their business practices, they are successful in spite of them.

With that being said, they are a fading distant third right now. Who knows if they had better business sense where they might be.
