Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

For those still looking for a new HDTV, I saw this reply to a HD thread on one of South Carolina's sports message boards. Might be worth looking into.

"Get to a Costco. They have a LIFETIME warranty. No need to buy extended warranties. That piece of mind is well worth the cost of membership. Your satisfaction is 100% guaranteed.

To get the most bang for your buck, go there on August 7th. They'll have a new Vizio 42" LCD (made by LG) for $1,599......with a coupon at the door for $300 off to bring it to $1,299. It's only valid until the 13th. If you can find a store that already has it for sale, snatch it up. You can then go back for a price adjustment and get the $300 back. No questions asked.

A couple stores still have them for sale, but most pulled them due to the upcoming coupon. They didn't want to deal with all those price adjustments.

It features 2 HDMI inputs, while most flat panels still only include one.

    Hope this helps.

on the 360 I had got the core system not knowing I would be getting a HD TV but got and LCD HD TV and went out and got the Mad Catz HD cables for the 360 would I notice any difference in the picture using the Monster Cable version or doesn't it matter what cable I use.

I would just use the Mad Catz cables. Monster is WAY overpriced. You might notice a very very slight difference if you have a great eye for stuff like that, but its not near significant enough for the $$$.

I'm not sure about Vizio, but the LG brand has really grown the last year or so, and I haven't read anything adamantly AGAINST them.

I suggest going and looking at the set, and finding a place where you can fiddle with the picture. The display has all the inputs you could want (two HDMI is just now becoming standard) and the 720p native is good for 360. Just watch the screen, set the picture to "Pro" or "Movie" and see if it gives you the depth and detail you are expecting. Check for the "screen door effect" (pixel spacing in a grid pattern) and look at online reviews.

Others might be able to help that have the flat panel LCD's. I know the Sharp Aqous sets are different and higher rated, but flaws and tips on that kind of display technology might help in your search as well.

The 8ms response time sounds good, but lag might be a problem if you are using PS2 or Gamecube (due to the upconversion to the native resolution). I think lag is a problem for most displays until you get into the 3-5ms range...so check for a "Game" mode if you are planning on using other consoles.

              Good luck!

Vizio's are starting to make a name here in the states. Right now they have a 50" HDTV Plasma going for $1,999. They are an Australian Company. Reviews have been good from CNET & other sites.

I am actually on verge of getting a Vizio 32" HDTV LCD for my bedroom. $800.00 @ Costco.

I don't want to beat a dead horse too much, but I'll continue to wail away. With football season (albeit pre-season) starting tonight, I am coming to the conclusion of that I must get a new TV soon. I will be buying a 55" Sony SXRD, but I need some advise, from you fellow OS'ers who have purchased this model, on where to buy it from. Is Best Buy my "best" option?

Is the 55" A2000 SXRD even out yet? The XBR1 is only 50" and 60". I have the 50" from Best Buy, but it really doesn't matter where you get it. Just make sure you get a warranty, since new rear projection HDTV's can be notoriously finicky (and the Best Buy warranty DOES cover lamps).

For information sake, the A2000 SXRD does use a bit different image processing compared to the XBR1(and this fall XBR2) models. It doesn't properly deinterlace 1080i signals and employ the 2:3 pulldown required for film based content. Still an excellent TV, though the interlacing issues may diminish the "punch" of the image (I'm sure avsforum will have a comparison in a couple weeks). The image processing is the reason the A2000 models are considerably cheaper...that and the third HDMI which will be on the XBR2's.

                        Good luck!

Johnny - Thanks for all of the information that you post in this thread. As a newcomer to all of this info, your posts are always easy to understand and helpful.

I am also awaiting the arrival of the 55" A2000 model. I am pretty much decided on the SXRD (based on this forum and other research), but I have not seen the A2000 models in the store yet. Can you please clarify what you mean when you mention the new models not properly deinterlacing 1080i or the 2:3 pulldown feature? The 2 HDMI's should be fine for me, but the other issues would be concerning to me. In my mind the SXRD is the "supreme" HDTV, and I want the best when I finally make the jump. Should I be concerned about these A2000 models? Any other info or links you could provide would be helpful. Thanks so much!

I saw the 50" Plasma at Sam's Club this weekend, it's a nice set. $2000 isn't bad for that set considering the feature set. I was impressed.
