Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

    Hey guys,

I have a stupid question, but I know someone here will be able to answer it and only laugh mildly. If I have my HDTV set to 1080i and the game I'm playing is in 720p, do I have to change the settings on my 360 or will the TV automatically adjust to give the best possible resolution? Thanks!

No laughs here...the best option would be to have your 360 set to output to the native resolution of your set. If it's an LCD or Plasma the info should be easy to find in your manual, and if it's CRT set the 360 to output 1080i.

      Done!

(though I'm not sure how you are setting your HDTV to output a resolution...)

Anybody here own the Samsung 3251 (or 3252) new 32" LCD model? I've read good things and am hoping to pick this model up after Christmas if I can get some good deals. Unfortunately, we don't have any good TV internet dealers like the US has. The price differences are staggering sometimes when looking at those deals on bizrate or nextag. The MSRP is $1799 US or C$1999 but its just over $1000 for some dealers with many around $1100 US.

Edit: CNet just reviewed it for a 7.6 score which is good considering how tough they are. Its the highest rated LCD TV in the 32" or less range. http://reviews.cnet.com/Samsung_LN_S...-31787622.html

I guess I meant the native resolution. Thanks for the info!

I saw a TV the other day that said all signals converted to 1080i on the info card so is that good or not? It's the only decently priced one there and it doesn't list anything on the info card other than that.

Another dumb question guys, but I have to ask. Why do most people recommend turngin the "sharpness" down on an HDTV? Thanks!

I believe they do so because it adds unnecessary artifacts to the image.

To be honest, I can't tell a difference on my TV with sharpness at 0 or at 100.

Re: HDTV Questions and Answers Thread

It's not really "artifacts", high sharpness tends to add a "halo" effect on high contrast edges. The best way to test would be a guy in a dark suit against a light background. Turning up the sharpness should induce a fine white edge on the edges of his suit coat against the background. Lower the sharpness until you can no longer see the edges.

Another test is the scroll bars on ESPN HD. Increasing the sharpness will appear, up close, to actually alter the size of the letters and numbers (they'll typically appear to be getting smaller). Lower sharpness until you see them clear, and not blurry.

Of course a test pattern or calibration disc makes these issues really easy to see with a specific sharpness pattern, but the two examples above should help.

                    Hope this makes sense...

Even with the patterns on DVE, I can't tell a difference. I've even tried adjusting while looking at the bottom line, but still don't see a difference.

It's a 0 for me on HDTV and I doubt I'll change that. Movies it's at HDTV as well. 360 I set it at 20 (actually does seem to make a difference on the 360).

Should contrast and brightness be set at something particualr or is it user preference?

I have a question about widescreen vs fullscreen. In my basement we have a projector that hangs down from the ceiling and projects onto a 121 inch screen. Sometimes my mom gets the widescreen movies and some of them seem like the people are out of proportion. I was wondering if it's just because the projector isn't set to widescreen when we watch the widescreen movies or are we just crazy and its supposed to be like that?

I forgot about 360. To me, the difference is much more apparent on the orange blade of the dashboard (black text) then on a lot of test patterns. You can definately see the ringing as well as the blurriness if it's set too low.

Anyone ever sell their HDTV? My wife is no longer a fan of our 42" Panny RPTV becuase the cabinet takes up a fair chunk of space in our condo.

She wants to go LCD or Plasma but first what to do with the other? Local want-ads i guess?
