Re: Comic Book Fans....
About Cap America as I stated earlier the death of Cap has led me to be very interested in the character. In some ways he's probably the most DCish of all the Marvel heros. I think I may have to sign up sooner then I want (i'm reading through the boards) of CBR and ask the good folks there for suggestions on the best TPBs/Collections dealing with Cap.
I also see via the Marvel official site that there's a 5 part mini series that deals with the reactions of the rest of the Marvel Universe to Cap's death. It's being written by Jeph Loeb (who I think is great) and will have various star artists working on it.
Here's the article I read about it Fallen Son: The Death of Captain AmericaMember of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

I bet that 5-part reactions to Cap America will be good. I like Loeb as well, at least I like most of his stuff. I wasn't fond of his most recent stuff on the Superman/Batman title.Last edited by aukevin; 03-12-2007, 04:42 PM.

Re: Comic Book Fans....
Well I just bought the Marvel Encyclopedia from Amazon. Any reviews? I am thinking of doing a lesson plan for a future class about the Captain American character and how his role, now that he is dead, has changed as America has changed. Man I love comics.Comment

Here's something I think you could possibly use. This comes from Comic Book Resources excellent Comics Should be Good Blog's urban legends series. Check out the first entry that discusses how Mayor LaGaurdia personally protected Joe Smon and Jack Kirby from death threats shortly after Captain America debuted.

Re: Comic Book Fans....
I just wanted to post a link to a blog that I read all the time. It is filled with not only reviews of comics, but a pretty indepth summary of each comic, and that is how I stay up to date on all the happenings in the comics I don't read. The site covers both DC and Marvel comics, I read mostly the Marvel ones since I buy most of the DC ones. But it is handy to get a quick refresher on a DC comic that I might have read a couple months ago. The guys running the blog really do good and cover quite a bit of comics. I was able to read their summaries of all the Civil War stuff and they post a couple page scans for each comic as well. It's a really good site to follow comics you don't get a chance to buy, they don't cover all the comics, but they do cover a lot:

Great link aukevin. I've put it in my favourites. I also like that it's pretty in depth and the scans are actually big enough that I can read the word balloons without squinting my eyes! LOL
I'll definitely have to read this blog for the Marvel stuff and any DC stuff that might have my interest. I have been wanting to put at least one Marvel book on my pull list but I believe Marvel comics are more expensive then DC right? "sigh". Now that this blog is on my radar i'll have a better idea of what to get into.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

The site has actually helped me not buy some comics (amazing that there are any left that I don't get :P). A lot of times I'm happy enough to just know the story rather than needing the comic to flip through, like the Civil War issues and stuff, and this site really delivers that.

Re: Comic Book Fans....
A friendly bump to talk about some of the comics I've enjoyed lately...
There is currently a Justice League/Justice Society of America crossover going on right now that I think is really cool. Seven members of the Legion of Superheroes (revolving 31st century superhero squad) have arrived in the present day without their memories until a secret code word is spoken to them. Then they each awaken. The members of the JLA and JSA are going around the globe locating them using Superman's old Legion ring when he was part of the squad as Superboy. As they find the heroes they bring them back to the Hall of Justice. In the most recent issue, 5 of the misplaced heroes that have been reunited say that enough of them are together to go on with their plan, a plan that will kill one of them. There's two more issues to the story and I can't wait to see how it turns out. Right now the JLA and JSA aren't sure why the Legion members are in their time, are they a threat or not because who comes back in time except to change something.
I think the Superman comics have been great lately as well. The Superman title is building up to the final half of the Camelot Falls story where Superman has been told that his existence will be the downfall of man because people rely too much on him. The most recent issue brought to mind a lot of the different things that have been going on in the two in-continuity Superman books and shows that writer Kurt Busiek has got a lot of cool stuff coming up for Superman. Of course, I'm still waiting for the end of the Geoff Johns/Richard Donner Last Son storyline. I'm interested is seeing what happens with this Chris kid when Zod and his crew come calling for him back.
I haven't really gotten into Grant Morrison's Batman issues. Their good, just nothing too special to me yet. I'm still thinking Dini's Detective Comics work has been the real high point for the Batman books lately.
Speaking of Dini, I've really like the first two issues of Countdown that he is heading up. 52 was fun to read each week but it just didn't focus much on characters I cared about outside of Booster Gold, Adam Strange, and Starfire. Countdown has started good for me because it has been focusing on Red Hood, Jimmy Olsen, and Mary Marvel, all who I do like.
Teen Titans had an awesome story going with the Titans against a "Titans East" group of villains headed by Deathstroke. The final issue of that run fizzled as Geoff Johns transitioned out as writer to Adam Beechen (who's been writing the Robin comics which I've enjoyed a lot). Beechen is on Titans for about 3 months, one that I don't think I'll enjoy too much because they will feature this Amazon's Attack crossover thing where the women of Themyscira are attacking the US because of their treatment of Wonder Woman after she killed someone last year. Maybe he'll surprise me. But Titans will get a new writer for issue #50 and the lineup is shaking up a bit. It looks like my favorites on the team, Robin, Wonder Girl, and Kid Devil will still be part of the team, and it looks like Supergirl is joining, so I'm excited about that. I'm hoping Cyborg finally gets off the team.
Outside of DC, Wildstorm's Stormwatch PHD has been awesome. Unfortunately I don't' think too many people know this because the sales are going down. This comic features a group of "heroes" (some of them one time villains) in a kind of CSI format. It's been really great, so I hope more people pick up on it.
Another Wildstorm comic that I've enjoyed was Red Menace, a six-part mini series about a hero that is accused of being a communist during the days of McCarthy's anti-communist pursuits because of his ties to a Russian communist hero. It was a really good series and I recommend people getting it in either single issues or I bet a trade will come out sometime.
One other comic I just finished up was a 3-part mini series from Image called After the Cape. It is the story of a one time hero, Captain Gravity, that is kicked out of a Justice League type team due to having a drinking problem. He would lose control of his powers when he was drunk and cause problems so he was dismissed from the team. From there he went on trying to get his life back on track but fell into some bad elements when he had to find some way of providing for his family. The final issue really didn't resolve anything which was kind of disappointing, but it looks like they might revisit the characters. The story ended with his wife learning of the bad deeds and his falling back into alcohol and she leaves with the kids. At the same time his old buddies from the super team try to bring him in because of the trouble he's been getting into. It ends with Gravity seriously hurting his best friend on the super team and Gravity returning to an empty home as he just can't give up on his alcohol problem. It was a good series, just not great. It just kinda ended on a downer due to no resolution to the story IMO. Also the final issue featured two different artists and I really dislike comics like that because their styles were not too similar.
Anyway, those a few comics I've enjoyed over the last few months. Anyone else reading anything cool?

"Last Son".....let's just say i'm PO'ed at DC about that. Apparently the resolution is going to come in an as yet to be released annual. pfft....

Re: Comic Book Fans....
HMMM this sounds interesting. Hopefully I can obtain this on Mile High Comics when I go to buy my next TPB.
(I just read BATMAN YEAR ONE pretty interesting stuff and I can see the praise but the ending left me cold)
Speaking of Year One's, the Green Arrow Year One mini series starts in July. I'm looking forward to that. I've really enjoyed Green Arrow lately. He's always been an off and on character for me, and lately he has been on. I liked his characterization in Smallville, the most recent issues of his comic have been good with him working with Batman, and there was a mini series that just ended about the "other" Green Arrow, Connor Hawke, Queen's illegitimate kid. That mini was good, I've always liked Connor Hawke. I'm hoping he's around more. He's in the current story in the Green Arrow comics along with Black Canary and Speedy. I say all that because there is only one more issue of Green Arrow, #75 before that title ends. They must be building for some new series, because the final issue is suppose to have Queen proposing to Black Canary, then the Year One series starts and Black Canary is getting a 6-issue series at the same time. I'm guess something will spawn after those series are over that has Green Arrow in it. I just hope they don't forget about Connor Hawke. One of the hot characters now is Red Arrow (Roy Harper), the former sidekick of Green Arrow. He's been named Arsenal for a while now and part of the Outsiders, now he's in the Justice League as Red Arrow. He's a real cool character, but I miss the name Arsenal. I think it is cooler than Red Arrow.

Re: Comic Book Fans....
I used to be a big into comic books but my interest died over the last five years but I am back on the wagon!
This week alone I bought over 200 Spider-man comics. Thank you eBay... addicting as I wanted to finish of the Web of Spider-man collection.
All I read is Spider-man and don't see myself spending money on anything else except Venom/Carnage/Toxin and Dead Pool.Comment
