From what I understand, this is it. This is a "soft" reboot of the entire DC Universe. Some of the things that happened in the comics before still happened, some have not. I guess we'll find out as we go.

Yep, Still, I think it's a pretty good jumping on point if you want to get into DC comics either way.

I'm going to try and get my hands on Superman, The Dark Knight, and All-Star Western today. I had to order AC1, Batman 1, and Swamp Thing 1 so I can catch up for next month.

So far the only 52 title I've read is Batwoman and I really enjoyed it. Its hard to compare it to anything since I mostly read TPBs, but I've read it twice so far and its laying some nice groundwork thus far.

Last night I read The Walking Dead vol 1. It is interesting the things the show changed, but I might actually prefer the TPB to the show. One thing that both do very well is keeping that looming fear of a zombie attack at any moment.

yeah definitely. I've enjoyed getting back into it.

I agree with those that said Batman #1 was good, possibly the best of the month and I'm not the biggest Batman fan of them all. I'm going to get Superman and Teen Titans #1 today when they come out for digital download. So I will have ended up getting:

Grifter
Justice League
Legion Lost
Legion of Super-heroes
Nightwing
Superboy
Superman
Teen Titans

That's a few more than I wanted to get but I enjoyed them all. I might end up dropping Grifter, Legion Lost, and Superboy if it gets too expensive.

Switching over to the competition for a second anyone reading the Spider Island event over at Marvel?

I gotta say Dan Slott has done a great job on ASM and this Spider Island event has exceeded my expectations. I love the sprawling nature of the storyline and the whole thing with Venom having the cure and being almost a messianic figure is neat. Right now the crap has REALLY hit the fan and things are looking bleak for Spidey and his allies.

Great great event and one that you don't necessarily have to read ALL the spinoff titles to really get.

ASW was sold out at the local shop just with subscribers. I called yesterday and left a message asking to be put on the subscription list, but I guess I was just a little too late. I did come home with The Dark Knight and Superman, so not a total loss. I also had him order me Walking Dead 3 & 4 and Scalped vol. 2.

Has anybody ever read Darren Aronofsky's Batman screenplay? I read through roughly half of it today and it is definitely interesting. I really like the character portrayals and it would probably be an awesome TPB, but as a "Batman movie" it was never going to go anywhere.

Yes, that's the one. I actually like the characterizations, honestly. It definitely boils Bruce down to the basic fundamentals of Batman while expanding Gordon just as much. It definitely has the Frank Miller vibe going for it, but I honestly would watch this if it ever came out as an animated title.

I went with I, Vampire and Justice League Dark over Dark Knight and Voodoo to accompany All-Star Western. Haven't read them yet but based on reviews that seems to have been a good choice. Dark Knight appears to be quite 'meh' and I read the last pannel to find out who the "deadly --yet strangely familar-- foe" is and I wouldn't have been pleased with it.

Other than that I thought Dark Knight was pretty good all things considered. I like taking a peek into Bruce's life and the whole conflict between Bruce/Bats and the Internal Affairs guy at GCPD is intriguing. I'm guessing the woman Bruce flirts with is the rumored love interest....


I liked All-Star Western as well with Jonah Hex working with Amadeus Arkham on the case of a Jack the Ripper type in Gotham except well...It's a LOT bigger than that. I could've done without Arkham's psycho-analyzing of Hex but overall it worked well enough.


The issue I was most impressed with this week was Superman. George Perez did a marvelous job doing a (what appears to be) done in one story that nicely sets up the new status quo. I really liked how Perez took elements from the past and updated them (the whole 1970s GBS Era) and gave them a modern spin to it. It also seems like Supes will have a big supporting cast which I think all of the Superman titles have gotten away from the last 15ish years much to the character's detriment. This was also a VERY dense read so there was a lot of bang for your buck to it.

I hate to compare this with a title from the competition but Superman #1 took me a good long time to read and comparing it with Iron Man 2.0 Supes was meaty and had a lot going for it. IM 2.0 took me all of 5 minutes to read and i'm a guy that takes about 20 minutes to read an average comic!

Justice League Dark was intriguing, gonna give that a few more issues, Blackhawks was very meh and Hawkman was so-so. Not sure what to think of Aquaman but will also give that one a few more issues.

All in all not a bad week.

I enjoyed Dark Knight. It certainly wasn't the best, but I enjoyed the art and Bruce had a nice jab at Alfred. Its very straight-forward so far, probably a bit too linear for its own good. Watching Bats basically pull a James Bond and change into Bruce Wayne at the beginning was pretty cool. I didn't like the introduction of the obvious female interest (its obvious because its the only female in the comic) because it was too...on the nose. The last page is definitely a scratcher, though. I will reserve judgement until they reveal what the hell is going on, but I'm not sure I like where it's going.

Superman was better. It focused a lot on the Daily Planet as a name for all print-media and how it is being killed by all the other "arms" of media corps. It will be interesting if that plot point can make people care because in reality I doubt anybody actually cares about newspapers dying (or they don't seem to). Supes is very much a boy-scout in this as his little one liners and conversation with Lois is pretty righteous and blunt (sometimes close to tacky). There is some hand-holding going on that as a mature reader I could do without, but it was a fun read.

Of the new titles I've read, Batwoman is the best thus far.

I care about the death of print-media, but my local newspapers suck so I'm not really attached to newspaper printings. I don't want to lose magazines and I've elected to pick up physical copies of the new 52 because digital versions of things don't really attract me because there's a physical contact that is lost. With that said, I like how it presented the story with Clark being the champion traditionalist and Lois being the progressive. I like how Clark is fighting for print not because its "traditional" but because he truly feels its the best news medium out there. Its a little rift in a storied relationship that will be interesting to see how its developed.

Would you guys say he's vastly different from the Superman we see in Action Comics?
