That'd be an upgrade over MacGuire and I doubt fans of the first three films would mind it at all.

I think MacGuire's a good actor but I thought his performance in #3 was a bit "chick flick sensitive".

I can't help but think of Donnie Darko no matter what movie it is that he's in. Toby sucked in this last one, and dude can't do any worse.

Gyllenhaal almost replaced Maguire in Spidey 2, because of Toby's back problems.

Oh yeah, i do recall that too. And yeah it's Donnie Darko as Spiderman for me too, that's one of my alltime favorite movies in fact.

Well I think Tobey was perfectly cast as Spider-Man but you guys are right, he did stink up the joint the 3rd time around. Gyllenhaal would be an improvement after all Peter Parker is aging and Tobey still looks like a High School nerd in many respects.

As for Kirsten Dunst, I dunno I think she looked good in certain parts of the movie so I wouldn't want to replace her. She has done a good job with the material she was given. Richards is just a bit too long in the tooth IMO.

Wouldn't that be something, Jake in Spiderman and Maggie in Batman.

Well, considering Jake looks almost exactly like Toby, I think he would really be the only worthy replacement.

If Jake replaces Tobey...I'd be MORE than happy with a re-cast.

Seriously, probably the only actor that could fill in without it being a very noticeable problem.

You guys are gonna let me have it....

The Spidey flicks have always been a bit corny for my taste. I always glosse over that by saying, "What the hell, it's Spider-Man," but it just royally pisses me off when a director has such potential and throws it out the door on some whim of laziness and a want for some eye-candy. None of these movies have ever quie done it for me, with the second one coming the close. But even then, there were way too many ridiculous scenes for me to accept (with Tobey being passed around maskless in the train leading the pack.) No matter what, you should never want to laugh at a serious part of the movie, but I always do at these movies.

As for the acting: Tobey is a great Spider-Man. From the moment I saw the first ever Spider clip, Tobey's voice behind the mask was perfect and just as I'd imagined it. As Parker though, he pissed me off. He had some ******** facial expressions going on half the time when he's struggling. He couldn't get emotional at all without putting insane amounts of obvious effort into it. What I strongly disagree with is what you guys are saying about Tobey being at his worst in number 3. I think the script was at its worst, but when Tobey was angry or upset when he had the black suit and was being a badass (and not the corny dancing one) he was at his best of the trilogy.

That said, I am pulling for a change in director and Parker and MJ. I enjoyed the movies but there is so much unfufilled potential.

Yeah this was something that I forgot to mention in my original impressions but did you notice the subtle difference in Peter's look and vocal inflection when he was affected by the Venom suit? It wasn't very obvious but you could see the change in him without being hit over the head with a hammer. It was one of the better touches to the film IMO.

I actually loved that scene. It was a great end to a great fight scene. My biggest beef with that scene is that Spidey took off his mask since it got wrecked but when they gave it back to him, it was fine again.

I wasn't feelin him and disagree with you there. He just lacked the presence and the range to really pull that off. Tobey is good for the nerdy/ geek side of parker. But the darkside? He failed there IMO. Gyllenhaal(sp?) would've been much better there and more balanced overall. I'd like to see him takeover the role.

Richards as MJ would be tempting nonetheless...

Thought it was really, really good. Up there with #1 in my book.
