The key to any good Superman film is the emotional depth, story telling and appealing to the virtues of truth, justice and the American Way. Basically Superman is supposed to be an icon, an almost god among men kind of character. If Singer pulls that off without being cheesy then I think this will be a good film.
I haven't seen the movie yet but I'm with you on this. We all know that Superman is going to be a touch cheesy. Way more cheesy than Spiderman and Batman. His character is so 'milk-and-cookies' you can't really mess with it. But I'm fine with that.
I really want to see this film. What I'm hoping to get out of it is some great special effects and seeing Superman do what he does best: Fly, pick heavy stuff up and save the day.
I'm pretty sure this movie will have all of that so I know I'll like it.
Superman's simple and that's what I like about it. But I also like the idea that they are exploring Supermans emotional side. That's a different twist than what's been offered before.

I can't believe you are talking like superman is a real person.

I really didn't think anything was cheesy in the movie. Some of Clark's lines and expressions were corny, but that's Clark and totally intentional. That is why people cannot see Clark as Superman. Clark never lets a seed be planted inside someone's head that it is possible because he is always doing these corny things like getting stuck in doors. Someone like Clark just can't be Superman.

I guess some could see the way Superman looks at Lois a few times in the movie as cheese, but I don't. I see it as Superman just not being able to talk to the girl he cares about, partly because of shyness and partly because she has seemed to move on with her life while he was gone.

It's not a dark movie, but it isn't a lighthearted one either. Near the very beginning you get a quick glimpse of how Superman feels he is alone in this world and when he returns to the Daily Planet and finds Lois has moved on, that aloneness grows. But Superman is not a character that will let that keep him down. He realizes he is on Earth for a reason, and he continues his work despite whatever thoughts and fears or emptiness is inside him.

For those that have seen the movie, I still think that the plane rescue scene was the greatest Superman moment I've ever seen. The reappearance of Superman, the music in the background, the people he saves, the awesomeness of making it seem real on screen, and how it was hard for Superman to do but he kept pushing... just everything was awesome. It surpasses in my mind the first appearance of Superman in the first movie when he saves Lois from falling off the Daily Planet and catches the helicopter, which is one of my favorite moments in all movies.

Did anyone see the explanation to this on Clark & Lois?
Clark's mom is helping him design costumes until they finally choose on the original one.
When he walks out to show his dad, Pa Kent looks at him and says "What about your face? Aren't you worried about your identity?"
Clark slips on the glasses and looks at his dad like "Duh??"
Pa Kent rolls his eyes and makes a look like 'Ok?'.

              Pretty funny stuff.

Haha, it's a SUPERHERO movie fellas, NONE of it is believable. Yes, obviously it's unrealistic that people can't tell Clark Kent apart from Superman, but it's also unrealistic that a man flies around in blue tights saving just one city (because apparently the rest of the world is crime-free) from ultimate destruction.

I mean, c'mon, how is this stuff even debatable? Go to the movie, enjoy the special effects, gain something from whatever the story teaches you, and go home.

I'm sorry, but these discussions drive me nuts sometimes... "How can't people tell Clark from Superman?"??? How about the fact that there is a guy from another planet saving everyone's asses anytime something goes wrong?!? Haha, its just a movie, that's how...

No one was trying to talk about that. One guy mentioned it and it was just a joke. Zeroxray is really the only one who took it seriously.

That's cool, I hope you like it. I know you think highly of the original movie, I think it really holds true to that. I'm interested in your thoughts on Routh compared to Reeve. I thought he did a great job continuing the character of Superman from the first movie.

It is clear that this movie is built upon the original movie, but I think it stops there. I think everyone originally thought Returns happens after the second movie, but I really don't think so anymore. I haven't gotten a chance to read the issue yet, but in a discussion with someone who read this week's Superman Returns: Lois Lane prequel comic, it implies maybe just a couple months passed after the first movie before Superman's sudden disappearance. That is something I wasn't aware of last night going into the movie and it had raised some questions for me. Also the Lex Luthor prequel comic that came out last week implies that his and Superman's encounter with Zod and the other two Kryptonians has not happened either.

So in my mind now, I consider this movie pretty much strictly after Superman The Movie and all the other films are not part of this continuity.

Saw the movie last night, and I know it will make a lot of money, but I thought it was average at best, quite boring if you ask me. I mean I thought it was a remake of the old Reeves one, it was a continued, which I thought was stupid, I thought it was bulit from the ground up, well like I said it was average at best, Spiderman movies which are my favorite will crush superman movies any day.

As for the cheesey bit, the movie was pretty light-hearted (and somewhat cheesey at times). There were lots of joke bits at the Daily Planet but mostly the cheesey stuff showed up with the villains. It was Lex Luthor and his band of bumbling baffoons. When they got a chance to be serious one of them did something stupid to lighten the mood (basically up until the point where Lex leaves Lois and her kid behind with the clown guy). A more ruthless Lex would have been a better portrayal of his comic book counterpart but since it a Superman movie I didn't mind it so much.
