I'm sure aukevin or someone else will correct me on this but I believe this was one of Kevin Smith's proposals for Superman 5. Obviously Warners decided to go in a different direction.

As for your question, HELL YEAH! I'd love to see that on film. It'd be very expensive to film and market but i'm thinking that the shock value alone will make it a huge blockbuster.

There were two creative achievements during the Comic Book boom of the '90s. One was the emergence of the dark and sadistic Batman as penned by Frank Miller and the other was the earth shattering Death and Return of Superman.

According to BOF, Warner Brothers still intends on making a Superman/Batman movie.

I've heard about this as well. The impression I get of it is that this is just wishful thinking on WB's part. Would it be a co-production or would one of the directors/creative people helm the project?

There's just too many complications with a movie like that and i'm afraid it would turn into a horrible spectacle like the Batman movies of the 90s.

I agree with this. The Death and Return of Superman was one wild ride, but the story arc was so well written all around.

Superman didn't actually "die" in the battle against Doomsday. The fight was so intense and took so much energy to defeat Doomsday that he used all his solar powered strength and fell into a deep coma. Now, if the people had of been thinking, they could have left Superman out in the sunlight after the battle and he would have eventually recharged and awakened more than likely, unfortunately, they stuck him in a coffin and then in a concrete tomb, which of course blocked the sunlight and prevented Superman from coming back. In this state, Superman would have eventually died, but a couple thing happened that brought him back. During the whole deal with all the other supermen claiming Metropolis while Superman was in this coma, Superman's body was actually taken to the Fortress in Antarctica where it was recuperating from the sunlight. During this time, Superman did almost die at the same time Pa Kent almost did too. Superman's soul was about to "enter the light" and therefore Superman would die, but in this afterlife realm, Pa Kent speaks to Superman and they both decide not to go into the light just yet. Superman's spirit returns to his body and continues to recuperate, eventually gaining enough strength to come out of the coma and return.

yeah I think both Kevin Smith and Tim Burton were working on something like that. I'm not sure of the details though.

I'd kinda like to see a movie like this because if done right, that Doomsday fight would be awesome. Problem is for me is that I know the story and it really wouldn't be anything new to me. It'd be cool to see, but I would rather them do a movie with a new story that hasn't already been told. Now if they could include Doomsday in the movie, that'd be cool, I just don't really want to see Superman die in a movie.

BTW I had that special edition cover of the death of superman with the black and grey superman symbol, but I was like 10 at the time and had two of them, and I thought the regular edition looked cooler so I gave my friend the special edition one. He ultimately lost it, and then a few years later I found out the special edition was worth like hundreds of dollars.

I read the Kevin Smith script and I think it's easy to say it was the worst thing ever written. It really seemed like it was written by a 3 year old.
I hope Kevin Smith never touches another superhero script again. Stick to Clerks.

Edit: I just remembered Tim Burton's script and therefore Kevin Smith's script is the 2nd worst peice of writing in history.
In Tim Burton's story Superman loses his powers and is forced to fight crime in a suped up Superman-mobile and has a utility belt with gadgets to fight with. This is NO joke. He basically turned Superman into Batman. But it wasn't Burton's fault entirely. One of the producers working on the title at the time despised Supermans costume and also hated how he flies so he told Burton to scrap both. He also had a fascination with spiders so he told Burton to have Superman fight a giant spider. Where did this fascination come from? This producer had a 6 year old boy and one day he sat in during one his classes at school. The teacher taught about spiders and how they were the most fierce hunter, pound-for-pound on the planet. The producer was so entranced by these details that he became obsessed with spiders. What other movie did this producer have influence in you ask? Wild Wild West. And what did that movie have in it? You guessed it, a giant mechanical spider. It also had a brief scene where Will Smith and Klein discover a spider in the desert and they go on about how one of it's natural enemies is a bug that plants eggs in their abdomines.

I still have that edition. Wonder how much it fetches for now. Probably not as much.

The black and silver edition will get you $80 to $100 on ebay if it is unopened.

Here's another article about the sequel from Variety:
As he as much as announced at the San Diego Comic-Con, Bryan Singer has signed on to direct a sequel to this summer’s Superman Returns, this according to Variety - confirming rumors that were flying at the end of last week.

The sequel, though not greenlit by the studio, is expected to be released in summer of 2009, although, according to the trade, there is no script or budget as of yet.

As Variety interprets the pacting between Singer and the studio for a sequel – though Superman Returns didn’t perform as the studio had hoped, it’s not about to walk away from the Superman film franchise. The trade reported Warner Bros. and co-financer/co-producer Legendary Pictures as saying that they will still turn a profit on Superman Returns, noting that the film has just crossed $200 million domestically, and more than $390 worldwide.

The budget for the sequel, reportedly, will be under $200 million, with Warners put at $209 million after tax rebates and incentives, although, as has been previously noted, when factoring in all the development costs to get Superman Returns to theaters (multiple scripts, directors and lead actors), the total costs for the film over the years to Warners has been nearly $250 million – though the $40 million in development previous to this specific version of the film, as been absorbed.

Warners has an option on Brandon Routh for the sequel, which, according to Singer when speaking at Comic-Con, will be more action-oriented, as the director said that while Superman Returns allowed him to introduce the cast, the sequel would allow him to, “Go Wrath of Khan on it." While Singer didn't name any particular villains that would be in the sequel, he teased - more than once – of an alien threat.
An alien threat huh? Zod is definitely an alien threat. Other aliens that would be a major DC universe villian I guess would be Darkseid, Doomsday, or maybe Mongul. I guess Brainiac is alien technology. Who else could it be?

I don't know much about the modern interpretation of Brainiac but is there any way to put a somewhat Borg (from Star Trek) spin to Brainiac? That would be pretty interesting. If not, I'd be happy with Zod or a more mainstream interpretation of Brainiac.

I know! I was cringing when I first read that. I'm so glad that Burton didn't get the green light. On some boards I've visited rumour had it the negative public reaction to these ideas had the powers-powers-that-be scrap the whole concept.
