It doesn't, and that's why the show has EXCELLENT writing. Not every single word and every single scene in a TV show has to propel some part of the plot forward. Tyra's tryst was something that happens in small towns; that's it. Plus it does open the door to a pregnancy angle.

It was not depicted in the previews as a major character. It was depicted as a major event, and for that episode, it was a major event.

It was pretty obvious from the mother's reaction to Smash bringing up Dad that Mom has worked hard to suppress memories of the father, who clearly wasn't a candidate for Father of the Year. Dillon was playing at Gatling, which is where Smash and his family grew up and where his dad is buried. Wouldn't it make sense that the trip to Gatling would open old wounds?

What is there to do? Taylor stood his ground, and the OC backed off. The tension exists, and it may boil over later.

    I agree on this one!

Seriously, though, does every plot line in your life resolve itself with a beginning, middle and end in perfect, logical progression? No. And neither does this show. That's one of the things that makes it so good. It's messy and disorderly at times, much like the life of a teen-ager in a small town.

So no, I don't think the writing is terrible in "Friday Night Lights." I think it's excellent, among the best on TV.

I think the writing is decent, I wouldn't put it as among the best on tv, there are a ton of shows better written than FNL. That said, I don't have a problem with it. I do have a little problem with the acting though, a lot those actor have stiff wooden deliveries, the coach being the main culprit. Riggins and Smash are just awful imo. I do like the show though, all that drama is addictive; I wouldn't expect to see it nominated for any kind of emmy though.

I've kinda soured on the show since they've gone Smash on steroids. Kid has one bad game and all of a sudden he's juicing, complete with acne.

it wasn't the bad game, it was the effect that one game had.

Its not so much that its not linear/logical, its that I think they throw random stuff in that doesn't make sense. A lot of times when I'm watching, I'll just think to myself "WTF?" Its big things like ones I mentioned but also smaller things throughout episodes, just the way certain scenes are handled.

I like the show and all, and its clear to me they have an overall vision of where they want the show to go, but some of the stuff in between just seems kinda off to me.

Everytime I watch it, there are things that happen that make little or no sense based on any previous episode, and they'll just randomly introduce new stuff that is the focus of entire episodes.

A couple of examples come to mind:

                1. The episodes where Riggins ex-GF hooked up with that dude from LA. WTF? How does that fit into anything about the show in any way?

                2. They randomly introduce the hispanic defensive back who gets kicked off the team and they make it out in the previews like its a major character getting kicked off the team

                3. There has never been any sort of mention about Smash's dad, and all-of-a sudden its the focal point of the episode out of nowhere?

The other thing that bugs me is how they'll introduce something and then never seem to mention it again. Take, for example, how the OC threatened Coach Taylor. They haven't done anythign with that. And remember the end of the episode where Buddy Gerrity said VooDoo went to the media telling his story? What ever happened to that?

I guess its just obvious to me that while the writers had an overall vision of how they wanted the first season to play out, and there are many recurring themes, it seems like they throw a lot of random stuff together in the episodes.

And BTW, how many times can a team win on the last play of the game? LOL
I have enjoyed the hell out of this show so far. That said, I can't help but agree with you, to an extent. Some of their writing seems very haphazardly done, but on the other hand, it is possible to pick apart any tv show or movie if you want to look hard enough.

I can answer your elusive #2. The sole reason that story took place was to further flesh out the character of Matt Saracen. The main thing was that he had witnessed first hand what happened, and was torn between being loyal to his old friends (and also doing what was right), and being a "good" teammate by keeping his mouth shut and letting the kid get away with the beatdown. I do feel that too much time was spent on it, but it served its purpose of showing the kind of integrity Saracen (my favorite character on the show) has.

Also, regarding Tyra's little fling with the guy from L.A., you could look at it as more of her being a whore, but I also saw it as a way for them to develop her a little more, showing that she has aspirations for her life and wanting to get out of Dillon and what not.

One thing that REALLY bothers me:

The timing in this show is awful. Dillon's, what, 6, 7 games into the season, and a man who was paralyzed by breaking his neck already is able to go home in a wheelchair under his own power? Goes to the writing I guess.

Also just little timing things are messed up. If you really look for them you can find them.

Still a great show though. And what's up with the nosebleeds? Is that a steroid thing?

                        Yep, I would assume so.

Great show tonight. Some really dramatic scenes with Lyla and Street, Lyla and Riggins and Riggins and Street.

Plus Buddy Gerety isn't the prick I thought. He's very caring with Lyla. But Coach Taylor needs to loosen up with Julie, who looked fine again tonight. Coach should just bang that MILF wife of his at every opportunity to relax.

Yeah it is, and you can get them from working out too much. I used to get them often when I was training really hard in the summer, they'd just be quick and small nosebleeds.
