    Massachusetts elementary school bans tag

We're developing a society of weenies.

Tag is now out during recess at Willett Elementary School in Attleboro.

So is touch football and any other unsupervised "chasing" games that are deemed to pose the risk of injury as well as liability to the school.

"It's a time when accidents can happen," said Principal Gaylene Heppe, in her second year at the helm of Willett.

Heppe included the new rule as part of a standardized set of playground rules that were not in play upon her arrival.

In doing so, she joined in a growing movement against traditional games played by young children in school gymnasiums and playgrounds. A few years ago, school administrators in the area, as well as around the country, took aim at dodgeball, saying it was an exclusionary and dangerous game. Modified versions now include softer balls and ways for children to re-enter the action.
Read the whole thing for some parent quotes and a picture of a little kid kicking a ball. I dunno, looks pretty dangerous to me. Personally, I think each kid should be confined within his or her own giant bubble during recess and while walking from class to class. I mean, accidents may happen.

I don't have kids, but c'mon....this is friggin' ridiculous. You think kids won't come home from being pent up at school all day and run around in their backyards, unsupervised? Unfortunately, the problem here is the excessively litigious society we've created for ourselves where everyone is afraid of being sued for everything.

    Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.

Re: Massachusetts elementary school bans tag

I was bullied a lot as a kid, I didn't get to be in any childhood cliques but I had a couple great friends and we spent recesses doing basically everything. Heck, even tho I was the odd one out there were times when I actually played touch football during recess...ON CONCRETE!

I guess that's out now too eh?

It's games like tag and dodgeball that fosters creativitiy and healthy living. Sure, there were some accidents and kids got hurt once in a while but that's part of growing up!

I remember one time for Gym we played ball hockey and some other kid had his stick up and I didn't see it. Needless to say I ended up with a cut above my eye . The teacher running the Gym class didn't freak out and stop the game, he just had me go and wrap my head with a towel to stop the bleeding.

I bet if something like that were to happen in today's society they'd ban ball hockey ASAP! I can't believe how wussified our society has become. Yeah I don't like the violence and stuff on the streets but sheltering kids to the point that they can't defend themselves or think creatively is the wrong way to go.

What a joke. We could play tackle football and the teachers didn't give a damn...this is ridiculous.

Unbelievable. I don't dare think of what recess would be like without things like tag, football, or dodgeball.

Man, for a second I thought you were talking about the body spray for men! I was visualizing some stud third grader walking out on the playground with this stuff on and a bunch of girls gang tackling him.....which come to think of it is another injury risk!

Ban TAG Body Spray for Men in Schools NOW!!!!!

Kids should be playing 360 on their recess these days.

Ironically, my mother (who is a 4th grade teacher) said that they banned using body sprays at her school. She said some of the kids would coat themselves in that stuff and some other students were having trouble breathing. Other's would spray themselves every 30-60 minutes...

To be fair, it's not like they're banning dodgeball b/c they don't want kids to lose at anything... they're just worried about getting sued if a kid gets hurt. The easiest thing to do is the whole permission slip thing. As annoying as that might be, if the teachers get parental permission to allow their kid to play dodgeball, the school is no longer libel.

That sounds like a good idea. It's just that I can't believe that only 20 years ago we DIDN'T need that kinda thing. The only permission slips I had to have signed by my parents were if my class was going on a field trip.

I also thought this was about the TAG spray. Needles to say the new generation of kids are turning out to be complete wussies, annoying, demanding, and metrosexualized(...i know it's not a word) little bastards.

Hey rubisco, Shouldn't signing up to the school already be part of knowing your kid will have recess and will be taken care of if any injuries happen during that time or any time during school hours? I've had bad injuries to my eyes twice when i was in elemantary school and i was taken care off. Parents were called when it happened but I was usually already taken care off by the school nurse.

I agree. But this particular school is making an effort not to be sued just in case the worst happens. I don't blame the school for making efforts to prevent being sued due to our litigious society. I was mearly suggesting a way to circumvent the need to "bubble wrap" our kids.

Man when I was in school we play suicide everyday during recess. The teacher's didn't like it but the lunch moms usually turned the other cheek.
