Jeez, you guys are so brutal. They're not outlawing recess. I'm sure kids will still be kids by running around, falling down, acting stupid, etc... the schools just want to make sure that kids aren't injured doing something that can be avoided. I don't think the admin ppl are stupid enough to think that banning dodgeball/touch football etc... will ELIMINATE injuries, but it will help with avoidable accidents. What I think this will hurt in the long run is social development more so than physical development.

Re: Massachusetts elementary school bans tag
In 3rd or 4th grade, I was playing football, happened to be 2 hand tag, on a parking lot. I caught a long TD and those really hard rubber footballs, the tip hit my thumb and jammed the thing bad. I couldn't write for about 2 weeks, but no one got in trouble, football didn't stop, my parents just took me to the doctor. Its life, stuff happens, deal with it. This is just because of idiots out there who want to sue for everything.Comment

I also thought this was about the TAG spray. Needles to say the new generation of kids are turning out to be complete wussies, annoying, demanding, and metrosexualized(...i know it's not a word) little bastards.
Hey rubisco, Shouldn't signing up to the school already be part of knowing your kid will have recess and will be taken care of if any injuries happen during that time or any time during school hours? I've had bad injuries to my eyes twice when i was in elemantary school and i was taken care off. Parents were called when it happened but I was usually already taken care off by the school nurse.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. If I went any bigger, it would not have properly fit with my equipment, so I had to optimize. I'm okay with it, but I also know what I'm missing with those five inches. :)Comment

Re: Massachusetts elementary school bans tag
I played football on concrete and once I jumped to catch a pass and some kid ran underneath me and hit my legs and I hit the concrete face first. I thought I was gonna be scarred for life but luckily they went away after a few days. It was really bloody though.Originally posted by BlzerLet me assure you that I am a huge proponent of size, and it greatly matters. Don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise.

Re: Massachusetts elementary school bans tag
It is unfortunate that this sort of thing is going on. And certainly this must have come about because of some sort of precedent, where a parent sued a school for their child injuring themself during one of these activities. Shame on the parent for pursuing such a thing. How ridiculous is it that kids can no longer get to play the sorts of games that they naturally organize and gravitate towards because the potential legal and monetary consequences of one of them getting injured is of to great a risk to the adults. Filing a lwasuit against a school on the grounds that they were injured playing with their friends friends at recess doesn't help to protect your child, unless of course they electrocuted themself when one of their friends dared them to touch a live wire sticking out of the ground on school property. Would a parent sue the Parks and Recreation Department if their kid tripped in the park playing with their friends and broke their arm? This is just a sign of just how selfish adults have become and how willing they are to use the law to gain some easy capital. Apparently kids will not be kids, they will be fragile pieces of bone china.Comment

Re: Massachusetts elementary school bans tag
Pretty much.
If my kid actually went to this school, I'd almost be tempted to take them out. May sound like a dumb reason, but I don't want my kid being treated like some f'in ******, where he thinks if he gets a scratch, he's going to die.
God, I hate living in a society where you can basically sue for anything. It's pathetic.Originally posted by CardsFan27This is the 3rd time John Calipari has been to his first Final Four! What I'm Currently Listening ToComment

Re: Massachusetts elementary school bans tag
A few years ago, school administrators in the area, as well as around the country, took aim at dodgeball, saying it was an exclusionary and dangerous game. Modified versions now include softer balls and ways for children to re-enter the action.
Maybe DDR recess time could be added for exercise and safety.Comment

Re: Massachusetts elementary school bans tag
Banning games doesn't seem like the right thing to do. If they are worried about kids being singled out and stuff just make sure you have several activities for everyone to play so they can choose whether or not to participate.
I mean, I was a heck of an athlete for an 8 year old back in the day, and I put some serious butt kickings on some of the "uncool" kids in recess in just about every game you can think of. I can imagine that some of them were honestly scared of recess everday, or that they hated school. So I can understand them not wanting kids to play these games.
But as long as you make the games optional, I don't see the problem. Aside from injuries and stuff, but yea, we didn't even worry about that stuff back then.Comment
