Re: Massachusetts elementary school bans tag

I mean, I got out of elementary school 3.5 years ago, and we were playing tackle football on concrete in the winter with ice on the concrete. I broke some bones, and my parents just told me not to do anything stupid (which I didn't listen to, but that's a different story). We also just wrestled down a hill.

I just realized how stupid I was...but it was fun then.

OK if you say so lol. I hear you and agree. I just think the most important thing is to make a kid feel important and not like a loser. So when they become an adult then they become a loser, but at least they never lost in tag! lol

          Funny stuff...

We used to always try and play tackle football outside during Junior High PE class, but the physical ed teacher would always stop us after a few plays.

You know why? Not because they were afraid our parents would sue.

How they were going to explain to the football coach that is starting WR or DE just broke his arm...

I'm really confused as to why you don't think physical activity is a good thing and failure as a child is a bad thing. If someone is always blowing sunshine up your butt every day telling you how great you are, especially when you screw up, how are you supposed to learn how to rebound from failure as you get older? People fail all of the time. That happens in the real world. What's great about this country is in most cases you can get a second chance. Anyway, if they are banning tag because of self-esteem BS, then it's ridiculous. If it's because of the fear of lawsuits if some kid gets hurt, it's still ridiculous but unfortunately, and sadly, understandable considering how everything works nowadays.

I do agree with you lol, but the kids self esteem is hugh. I understand that especially being a dad. It is a tough situation. I am not against tag. I just think a kid having a good self esteem is important. But then I do agree with you about teaching them the real world. That is why it is tough. I think it is because I work a juvenile hall and see how these kids turn out. No encouraging words from their parents at all. That is just how I see it. Just my opinion. I loved playing tag, but I fast and we were pretty man to the kids that were not so good at it. School's are up against a wall right now. So I can understand why they are doing what they are doing. And I don't blame them.

Thank god I live north of the border, they don't induce ridiculous ****s like this. Instead, they encourage kids to get out more and be active. My schools would always encourage us to go out for walks and take buses rather than taking rides from parents.

America's kids are becoming *******, America's becoming pussified in itself. Breathing on Paris Hilton can get you sued for 100 grand. Pathetic.

This atttitude is why we're becoming such a litigous (sp?) and blameless society. We're trying to shield kids from failure, when they become adults they refuse to take any responsibility or acknowledge when they fail. This results in more lawsuits from law abiding failures and more "the twinkies and/or videogames made me kill" defenses when the non-law abiders fail. Ever wonder why people don't acknowledge they are fat because they like BK and don't exercise, then go sue Burger King for being addictive? This is why.....

Those kind of things are ridiculous.

Now, if you wanna talk about frivolous medical lawsuits that are a major factor in the declining quality of medical care in this country, I'd love to see you defend your profession =)
Thank you for pointing out the infamous McDonald's case. Did you know for years prior McD's had been warned about the absurdly dangerous temperature of their coffee and the extremely loose and flimsy covers they used for their coffee? Probably not, because the media didn't really present that side of the case, they just made it appear completely frivolous. That woman who finally sued was hardly the first to be rather severely injured by McD's negligence, she was the first to do something about it.

As for the cheerleading lawsuits. What about those coaches who play favorites and cut kids who deserve to be there just because they don't like them. Maybe you've never experienced that, but I actually have. My HS was horrible for choosing teams because of politics in the school, not talent on the field. When a kid who wants to participate is losing out because of this, why shouldn't they have some sort of action against the coach? Is this always the case? Of course not, but I think that if the person really feels that it is and wants to take a stand that there is no problem allowing a jury to decide if this kid just sucked, or if the coach is a douche bag playing favorites and denying someone of an opportunity.

As for the fastfood making people fat comment, what about the fact that places like McD's and BK adding chemicals to their food that make it physically addictive? I stopped eating fastfood 1.5 years ago now, and for the first couple of weeks I went through withdrawal symptoms. If in fact true that physically addicting chemicals were added to food that is incredibly unhealthy for you as it is, why should they not face liability for this?

In all three of these issues, you have shown that they can be treated as completely frivolous, but I hope I showed you that in fact there may be some issues beneath the surface that the media will never go into because they love making lawyers look bad. Bobby Knight was right when he said the journalists chosen profession is just one step above prostitution.

Now in this case in Attleboro, I haven't read the article, but I am going to guess that something happened to warrant this action by the school. Perhaps if the school supervised the children better during these games to insure that injuries don't occur it is a non-issue. I know when I was a kid, there was a another young adult whom had already stayed back 3x by 4th grade, who would terrorize kids at recess, yet the teachers and school who knew this was a problem did nothing about it. So what was a simple game between kids, would lead to a kid who should have been in 7th grade terrorizing 4th graders. The school could have taken more action before the ban for sure, but I highly doubt it was completely frivolous.

As for the whole tag thing, I remember when I played lacrosse in HS our coach used Sharks and Minnows for conditioning. Oddly enough we never got tired at the end of games, and our conditioning involved stuff like this, Ultimate Frisbee, etc.

Tag is now out during recess at Willett Elementary School in Attleboro.

So is touch football and any other unsupervised "chasing" games that are deemed to pose the risk of injury as well as liability to the school.
As I thought, supervision was the issue. What would be so wrong with I don't know, telling a teacher to supervise these kids during recess so that they can play these games.
