Just the 1080p, when the A20 released during the summer.........which is the successor to the A2, they added 1080p and the upconversion improved a little bit. Other than that, its the same player.

Rocky, I've had this thing since the beginning of the year and for $100 it's a steal.

Here's a review of what the A20 added over this one

If HDMI 1.3 and 1080p60 are on your list of what you want in a HD DVD player, then the A20 fits the bill. It is a solid player that is a nice improvement over the first generation hardware, but we do miss the discrete analog outputs and the coax digital output. Toshiba continues to improve its players and keep the pressure on the Blu-ray camp to improve theirs. While the A20 doesn't seem like enough of an improvement over the A1 to entice owners to upgrade, it is most certainly a solid offering and comparable to any next-gen player from any manufacturer.

As the article states, if the A20 isn't that big of an improvement over the A1.........what can be said about improvement over the A2 which was the second gen player?

$99 is a great, "ah, what the hell" price.

If Wal-Mart continues this to clear out the A2s for the A3, then it is a win-win.

I was reading last night and I think that Slayer posted this also, but KMart is going to carry the A2 also. I think that Toshiba might be using the A2 as their budget player moving forward in stores like Walmart and KMart where they good a good amount of traffic.

Do you get 5 free HD-DVD's with this too?

it's almost tempting if just to have a standalone player and stop using the 360...would kinda defeat the purpose of my add-on, ugh.

The 5 free movies are valid on any participating HD DVD player (regardless of its price). So, yep, in some people's cases, more free movies.

Could this be the tipping point? I mean Bluray still has major studios like Disney, Sony Columbia and Fox exclusive but if the average consumer buys the cheaper player wouldnt that force the studios to at least go format neutral?

I would think that this could be possible, unless Sony does something and releases a sub $200 BluRay player. I think their cheapest right now is the $399 PS3 right? I thought I had read on HDD.com that someone was selling a $299 player, but they were being clearanced out.

If Toshiba could continue to produce the A2 and get it to the $99 price point, these might sell people into the HD era of DVD.

I think so. It's one thing for Walmart to have 10-15 players on sale, but it's another for Best Buy to sell at the $99 point. I expect Amazon and Buy.com to follow just like they did on the 360 HD DVD drive w/ Heroes. One thing is for sure, HD DVD has been DOMINATING the HD disc news over the past few weeks, from Transformers to the add on deal and now this.

I went to BB at lunch just to see if I would get lucky and they didn't have any and they haven't had any for a while, only carrying the A3 now.

That seems about right. TOSHIBA is no longer making the A-2, so to make room for the NEWER A-3 this is happening. For those on the fence, don't hesitate on this deal, TOSHIBA is very good with updating their players via Updates.
                                For this price it's a no-brainer
