    Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

So I had Monster House (I think that's the name of it) and Click from the BB BOGO the other day and I go into Target today on my lunch break and give some line about my aunt buying these and she must think i'm like 12 or whatever. The clerk was maybe 16, and she was like oh ok. She scanned them both and said well one is from here and one isn't. I about laughed in her face. Ended up getting WTC bluray though so I guess it wasn't a total loss.

Funny story at blockbuster today. I ask the employee there when will they be stocking Blueray and HD discs and he says that it will probably be one format and most likely HD because that looks best on HiDef TV's. When I informed him that Blueray stores almost twice as much info and is just a brand name for HiDef movies and looks just as good as HD he just gave me a bewildered look.

I know it's only some ignorant teenager who really doesn't give a **** about his job but there's alot of ignorant employees working at Blockbuster, Best Buy etc... who don't know much and assume HD is better because it has "HD" in the name and these are the people who advise the average consumer who knows even less and the war is always won in the trenches. I think the tide may turn just on something as trivial as that. Sony should have came up with a better name.

The fact that the porn industry is supporting HD means nothing. When porn first appeared on VHS it was a great success only because the only other alternative to porn was stag parties and seedy theatres. Now you have access to it everywhere and most people couldn't care less if it's on HiDef or DVD.

I popped in Speed and Goodfellas last night to check out their picture qualities in a few scenes and wow. For two relatively old movies, they both looked great. The DVD of Goodfellas had a really grainy and dark feel to it, but the colors just jump off the screen on the BD version and the black contrasts are great. It looks like a new movie and is definitely worth a repurchase for anyone who likes the film. Speed was only made 13 years ago, but it also looked great.

I actually posted that arguement a few pages back (that HD-DVD would win the format war because it's name contains HD) although I didn't originate the idea, I read about it on CNET if memory serves.

Ok, I've got a $100 gift cert to Amazon and I'm going to blow it on BDs. In my cart right now, I've got Saw, Tears of the Sun, Enemy of the State, Black Hawk Down and Gone in 60 Seconds for a total of $104.80. Now I know Saw and BHD are bare bones in terms of extras (which I hardly watch anyways), but are there any others that you guys would recommend or suggest I stay away from? And don't say Crank or Transporter as I'm not interested in those.

I picked up Pearl Harbor today and was told that it looks incredible, Kingdom of Heaven looks good also. Your question is somewhat confusing, are you looking for what to pick up or what not to pick up?

I'm sure Pearl Harbor's attack scene is fantastic...but it's 3 hours of crap for the rest of the movie, not worth it to me.

If Sony were smart, they would change the name ever so slighltly and call it Blu-Ray HiDef DVD. This way HD-DVD can't come after them either this way since no where in the name does it use HD-DVD...........HiDef is spelled out.

-Crank and Transporter are awesome.....top notch transfers.
-SAW isn't bad in BD either, but I think the movie will look better with the next release.
-Superman Returns is good in HD also.
-The Descent, OMG! Now I know what everyone was talking about how unbelievable this movie looks on BD compared to SDVD.
-Black Hawk Down, I don't have this one but I read the transfer to HD is very good.
-Underworld: Evolution, this is another movie that could be used as a reference disc alone. Very nice.
-Kingdom of Heaven, I rented this one and holy smokes did it look nice. Plus the movie is excellent.
-MI3, another one that was very well done.

If a movie is available on both BD and SDVD, I'm going with BD moving forward. Slowly I'm going to replace a few more of my SDVD movies with BD. There are some dudes on ebay selling very cheap, around $14.99 to $19.99.
