I found the Toshiba A2 for a good deal on Amazon, I might be pulling the trigger this week and finally joining the HD-DVD club.

Plus Toshiba is running: Free HD DVD Rebate offer: Get 5 Free HD DVDs after Mail-in rebate when you buy a qualifying Toshiba HD-DVD player.

5 free movies is like getting $150 for free. Not bad.

I guess last month I was reading it was 5 free movies from Toshiba and then 4 free movies from Best Buy for a total of 9. I was like holy crap!

I'm taking your advice on what you told me the other day on IM about the format.

Granted the A2 doesn't do 1080p, it has HDMI, upscales DVD's to 1080i, and offers true HD audio. Many guys I have spoken to on AVS, EG, and a few other forums is that the 1080i looks phenominal and not that much difference going with 1080p. I'm trying to take the cheap way of getting this format, but with the MS drive missing some features that I want I'll just check out the next affordable option.

IGN HiDef Battle: BluRay vs. HD-DVD (AU IGN Channel)

Including a Blu-ray drive in every PS3 is a gutsy move by Sony, but it may be correct in the long-term. On the other hand, Sony is notorious for introducing formats that never quite make the distance. Let's take a little stroll down the lane of the format-damned:

                VHS vs. Betamax
                CDs vs. Mini-discs
                MP3s ATRAC
                DVDs vs. UMDs

And on the hardware front, there is no question that the PSP is getting trounced hands-down by the Nintendo DS. Each time Sony has introduced or adopted a format, they push it very hard internally, but consumers have ultimately made other choices at point-of-sale.

So what is our ultimate decision? Well, if you have a spare thousand dollars, a large 720p or 1080p display and a 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound setup, then it may be worth your time and money to step into HD film territory. We'd put our money, long-term, behind Blu-ray - for all of the above reasons taken into consideration, especially the studio support it's garnering. As a guess, we would say that the format that goes into Christmas 2007 with the lowest price tag and widest range of movie titles behind it will become the format standard. As it stands right now, with Sony's PS3 about to enter PAL markets, and HD DVD drives not receiving the lion's share of shelf space, promotion or releases, we tend to think Sony may have gotten it right this time.

                ---------

HD-DVD can stay afloat war if they start to cut prices on the movies from $24.99/29.99 price range to the $16.99-$19.99 range. If you look hard enough online, you can find HD-DVD's priced at $19.99. It's the B&M stores like Best Buy that are chargine $24-$29 a disc. I went to Target today and they already have HD-DVD movies at $19.99 that these other stores are charging $5 more in price. If players are going to see the rumored $250-$299 price point, this could be a big deal getting more people on board.

Another clear cut advantage HD-DVD currently has right now is that their stand alone players upconvert SD-DVD's to 720p and 1080i which the PS3 does not. From the numbers that are out there, more PS3's have been sold than BluRay stand alone players which the PS3 doesn't allow upconverting.

That would be another marketing ploy that they should be using here.

Now that I'm invested in both formats, I would hate to see one of them fall.

Then there are also rumors that long time BluRay player backer Samsung showed off their first HD-DVD drive at GDC. This could be another Intel vs. AMD war that could last years with no clear cut winner in sight. Between April - August there are plenty of HD-DVD releases that will help push the format into the Fall where the battle will get interesting. There have been rumors that Microsoft will help make a push of HD-DVD in the coming months since they have backed the format.

                  Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

February Disc Sales: Blu-ray Continues to Outsell HD DVD; 'Departed' Offers Head-to-Head Sales Comparison

February again saw Blu-ray disc sales outnumber HD DVD by a wide margin, but a performance comparison of the month's top-selling disc may be the bigger story.

For the second month in a row, Blu-ray disc sales exceeded those of HD DVD by 2:1, with trade magazine Video Business today citing industry sources as saying a total of 250,000 Blu-ray movies were sold in February, versus an estimated 125,000 HD DVD movies in the same timeframe.

Perhaps more interesting, though, are the per-format sales for the month's top selling disc on both formats, Warner's 'The Departed.' Again according to numbers published by Video Business, in its first week of release, 'The Departed' sold 20,000 units on Blu-ray versus 13,000 on HD DVD.

These numbers would appear to contradict the widely-floated theory that Blu-ray's sales ascension is a direct result of the larger number of Blu-ray discs released since the first of the year (by our count, there were 55 Blu-ray releases in first eight weeks of the year, compared to 23 HD DVD releases in the same period).

While 20,000 vs 13,000 isn't a 2:1 margin, it does seem to suggest that Blu-ray's lead can be attributed to more than just that format's fatter release slate.

To be fair, 'The Departed' isn't the perfect apples-to-apples case study, as the HD DVD edition of the disc is an HD DVD/Standrd-Def DVD combo, making it five dollars more expensive than its Blu-ray counterpart.

Sony VP Rich Marty told Video Business that he expected the gap between Blu-ray and HD DVD to further widen in March, helped by next week's release of the highly anticipated 'Casino Royale,' which (like all Sony titles) will be released on Blu-ray only.

Universal VP Ken Graffeo cautioned against drawing long-term conclusions based on recent sales data, saying "You can’t look at the last two months as a trend or as what the consumer wants to do in this format... It’s really an artificial, short time period."

Graffeo went on to suggest that Blu-ray numbers are getting a boost from two-for-one specials offered by some retailers, pointing out Amazon's Blu-ray sale, offering 50% off select Blu-ray discs.
                  Helen: Everyone's special, Dash.
Dash: [muttering] Which is another way of saying no one is.

What's more intersting to me, is the fact that in reality, both are selling really well.

What's up with Fox and Blu Ray though? The day before Mr. and Mrs. Smith is to come out on Blu Ray, they delay it. Fox just can't seem to get any movie out period at this point. They keep pointing to issues with the Java issues with the BD format.

Also, WB is now having issues with it, as Blood Diamond has been scrapped on both formats as they are committed to releasing big movies on both formats day and date now. Really WB? Where's The Prestiege then?

The thing I love are the continual arguments from the HD-DVD camp about how you can't compare sales numbers within a given month because twice as many BDs came out as HD-DVDs over that time period. Well, isn't that a problem in and of itself? "Those numbers aren't fair, because practically no HD-DVDs were released." And this is their idea of a successful argument? Why am I buying an HD-DVD player if 2x as many movies are being released on BD?

I also like how they attempt to portray things like the Amazon 50% off BD sale as positives for HD-DVD, since they skewed the sales numbers. Let's see - if I can get a large number of BD movies for 50% off, or pay $5 more than full price for HD-DVD combo discs, which am I going to choose?

It's all about what movies are available and what they cost. And right now, HD-DVD is taking a beating on both fronts.

It's just a flop from last fall. The exact opposite aguments were taking place on the other side when HD-DVD was crushing BD. Granted both are out in full swing now. Both sides have major issues still to iron out. BD has severe Java capable issues with has now been delayed till the fall. Meaning movies like Batman Begins won't see BD until then, unless they cut features like they did on the MI:3 disc. HD-DVD just hasn't had titles released, why? I don't know. Was The Prestiege a bone thrown to BD by Warner Brothers because of movies like Batman Begins, V for Vendetta, Troy, etc all being HD-DVD exclusives? I don't know.

It appears that this war appears to be far from over. With HD-DVD going to have players at the $299 price point in the fall and rumor has it that BD is going to follow, this is going to be one long battle.
