Yeah, that'll be my step. But not for awhile, since I have the 360 HD-DVD drive and a PS3, so both will work at least for the next 4-5 years, regardless of either formats dying.

Aholbert, the combo player is out now at a whopping $1199. OUCH!!!!!! I want to jump on the HD-DVD bandwagon, but I fear they might be the ones losing the war. There are movies on HD-DVD that I would love to own in HiDef, but I'm fearful of the format going kapoot!

My thought is that, what if HD-DVD goes under, do you guys think that Sony might go to Toshiba and license the HD-DVD technology so it could be part of the BD players than people can play both formats?

Again, I know the combo player by LG is out and some might follow later down the road.

Oh, I dont mean now...I mean in like 3-4 yrs. I dont see the war being over until then. Also, as much as I love HD, I dont mind having to buy the Sony and Fox dvds on SD. I'm not as big of videophile as most people here so the difference isnt that apparent to me.

With that said i hope who ever loses is willing to license their format.

I liked Smokin' Aces + there are a few others on my list that could be what makes me buy the HD-DVD drive for the 360.

Does the HD-DVD drive decode the sound through the 360 and out of the optical if that is what you are using?

Thats a question I havent been able to answer. For example, Superman Returns has a DTS option and My reciever plays DTS. Now when I switch to DTS audio on the DVD, DTS will play through my reciever but it doesnt show that its switched to DTS from Dolby 5.1. So basically I have no clue how it decodes it or even if its even possible to play anything but Dolby 5.1

I'm in the opposite boat. Casino Royale, Xmen 3 and Pirates are making me interested in a PS3 and Bluray.

I thought that I read somewhere on AVSForums that the one drawback of the MS HD-DVD drive is the audio, that there was a problem with getting true HD sound or even DTS since it's not decoding the tracks.

That could be true but I thought that if there wasnt a DTS decoder there would be no sound at all. For example, years ago I would run my DVD audio through a stereo system that didnt have Dolby 5.1 or DTS. So when I would switch to DTS audio on the DVD, I wouldnt have any sound.

With the HD DVD drive, I get sound no matter what I put it on. True HD or DTS.

That's because the HD DVD Drive is sending DOLBY-DIGITAL sound to your receiver. The HD DVD Drive right now only outputs in Doby Digital. Word is that for the Spring Update, they are working on a DTS Codec for the HD DVD Drive.

The Dolby Digital Codec coming from the HD DVD Drive is better than Dolby Digital Codec coming from SD-DVD Drive.

That is the main reason I want an HDMI enabled 360, so I can take advantage of all the new lossless audio formats like True HD, optical does not have the bandwidth to support lossless audio.

Just so you know, that deal wont get fulfilled by them. My account was posted with the same 4.50 price but if you call them they will tell you that it was a pricing error and that all orders have been canceled and the money will be refunded to your account within 1-2 business days. If you check out avsforums.com you will notice other people who tried to take advantage of it also getting the same news, unfortunatly its a no go.

If the Spring update fixes that then I may consider the MS HD-DVD drive. Now we just need an HDMI capability with the 360.

You won't buy it because you can't listen to DTS?

Predicts Further Price Cuts and 10x Sales Growth for 2007

I know that this was already mentioned, but the interesting thing that I found. $299 BD players by the end of the year would really help the format out.

"Even better, the company said yesterday that by the end of the year it expects its stand-alone players to be sold at prices as low as $299 to $399.

Sony Electronics COO Stan Glasgow explained that he expects the price cuts to drive volume sales, saying "if you look at the history of DVD, $299 to $399, that's when sales really took off."
