Can't be decoded by the player, though I think, and no receiver actually decodes DTS-HD. So they end up downmixed to just high bitrate DTS tracks.

That is correct, but @ 1.5 mb it will still sound better than SD-DVD Version.

Very true. Just wanted to point out though that the DTS-HD track is hardly something to get really excited over, at least until receivers come out that can actually decode it. At this time, DTS-HD is probably not much better than Dolby Digital Plus (at 1.5 MB bitrate), if at all better.

The price screwup on the blu-ray of Babel ($4.50 in my case) on Gameznflix is a go! I ordered it last Thursday, and it finally posted to my account yesterday.

'Smokin' Aces' Coming To HD DVD
              February 27, 2007

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has released HD DVD Combo Format cover art for 'Smokin' Aces' starring Jeremy Piven, Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, Andy Garcia and Ray Liotta. The disc will be released day-and-date with the standard DVD version most likely in April, though no specific date has been announced.

Early disc details point towards numerous extra features including over 20 minutes of deleted scenes, an alternate ending, outtakes and more. The jury is still out on technical specs so we'll continue to keep our fingers and toes crossed for Dolby TrueHD lossless audio.

'Smokin' Aces' will carry Universal's standard HD DVD Combo Format SRP of $39.98.

I actually like the combo's. For the main reason, if HD-DVD ever goes under, my discs still work on regular DVD players... And it's nice because I can take my disc to other people's houses or other rooms of the house and watch it.

Yeah I like them for that reason, but the prices are so jacked up compared to just the single HD price

The very premise of the combo disc is a little whacked. Pay extra money to buy the previous, not-as-good version along with the new version, so that in case the new format we're pushing goes under you're not left with a coaster. The ability to play it in other rooms of your home has limited appeal I guess, but the very concept is almost like an admission of failure.

Plus, it's not like anyone's just going to revert to regular DVD if their format of choice crashes and burns. They'll go buy a combo player.

exactly. Plus, if I have a dvd I want to watch with friends, you bet your a$$ they're coming to my house to watch it. If I can watch it in HD on a 50" screen or a 32" flat screen SDTV....sorry, I win.

I hear ya, and agree. I haven't paid any extra over the BD with any I've got, if the BD's cheaper, I go that route. Just saying over all I don't mind the combo.

I dont mind it either especially since I'm not sure HD-DVD will win. Ive resigned myself that if HD-DVD goes under I will just break down and buy the combo player when it comes out.
