    Re: Official Blu-Ray & HD-DVD Thread

Good commentary on HD-DVD Combo discs at High Def Digest.

It turns out that backwards compatibility is not quite as appealing as the market research indicated. When DVD premiered back in 1997, did anyone feel the need to package a VHS tape in the box with each movie? These are meant to be next-generation products. We should be looking forward, not backward. As I mentioned at the start of this article, I don't object to the Combo format in principle. However, in execution it just isn't working out. They're priced too highly and a significant percentage of the discs have technical problems. Both failings are causing consumers to lose faith in the HD DVD format.

Quite simply, Combo discs are killing HD DVD. It's time to move past them. Consumers don't need them and certainly don't want to pay extra for them, only to find the discs seizing up in their players when they try to watch their newly-purchased movies. I am hereby officially pleading to the studios to give up this foolish scheme and make all future HD DVDs, whether new releases or catalog titles, just HD DVDs, without the Combo burden. Everyone will truly be better off if you do.

LMAO. For some reason, the idea of a package VHS/DVD combo just cracks me up.

I agree with this article.........Combo discs are just a waste imo, while to others they are great.

Exactly. I refuse to pay those ridiculous prices for the Combos. It's the only reason I haven't purchased Jet Li's Fearless.

Speaking of Jet-Li.."War" with Jason Stratham was pretty good.

And now, for some good news for the HD DVD crowd:

Universal Sets Date For 'Bourne Ultimatum,' 'Jason Bourne Collection' on HD DVD

Jason Bourne is back: Universal Studios Home Entertainment has officially announced that it will bring 'The Bourne Ultimatum' and the three-movie box set 'The Jason Bourne Collection' to HD DVD this December.

The third (and reportedly final) entry in the smash spy franchise starring Matt Damon, Universal says 'The Bourne Ultimatum' will hit HD DVD day-and-date with the standard-def DVD edition December 11.

Tech specs were not yet available at press time, but supplements are expected to be extensive, with the HD DVD boasting additional "U-Control" enhancements exclusive to the high-def version.

Retail price is $39.98 for the HD DVD/DVD Combo.

Universal is also planning to bring the previously-released first two installments in the series, The Bourne Identity' and 'The Bourne Supremacy' together with Ultimatum' in a brand-new limited edition HD DVD box set entitled 'The Jason Bourne Collection.' Also due day-and-date on December 11, a full press release with further details is expected shortly, so stay tuned!

Looks like I'll wait for the complete "Bourne" set on HD DVD.

I also just bought 'Troy', and while the movie wasn't THAT great (great premise, so-so execution) it looks fantastic in 1080p.

The director's cut or the orignial? I have the original on HD-DVD, wondering what the director's cut has added.

Does anyone have the regular Matrix Trilogy on HD-DVD? I'm not too keen on the extras in the 'Ultimate' set (watched them on the standard DVD box) and REALLY don't like the double sided discs in that box. I'm wondering if the set with just the movies have them single sided.

HD-DVD could be the victor due to pricing, and the fact that the PS3 is selling so poorly, it's carrying blu-ray essentially. Who knows, I have both, I would say if you can afford it to do the same, but most can't.

For me, I was more HD-DVD because of Universal, which has a majority of the movies that I enjoy.

HD-DVD has Universal, Parmount and Weinstein Group.

Blu-ray has Sony/Columbia/MGM, Fox, Lionsgate, and Disney

Warner and New Line are both multi.
Don't you think that with Blockbuster announcing they will only support Blu-ray that it is pretty indicative of where the war is heading? I mean that is HUGE, unless I missed something since that announcement. I have read several articles discussing this format war, and a lot of them point to blu-ray bigger in sales, the exclusive studios and with the addition of Blockbuster's announcement a couple of months ago, that blu-ray would win this one out.

I am sure the war is still strong though and it will likely be a while before one format completely goes out. I would much prefer blu-ray win this one, but that is because I have a ps3. If it doesn't win, then I will at least have a ps3

The Blockbuster deal is a little misleading IMO. There are only like 2,500 stores nationwide that even rent HD discs to begin with, and not to mention Blockbuster Online still rents out HD-DVD discs and they always have the new releases day of release, just like they do for Blu-Ray.

I have the regular, had the ultimate, sold it for what I paid for it, got the regular for 19.99 at Circuity City (it was mismarked). The extras are in 480i and 480p and are on a regular DVD in the ultimate, completely turned me off from it.
