Starz Unveils Feature-Packed Specs for First Blu-ray Titles
Specs are in for Starz Home Entertainment's first wave of Blu-ray titles, and they're sure to put a smile on the faces of eager horror fans.
As first announced earlier this summer, Starz will launch its Blu-ray support on October 2 with a quartet of horror classics, including the original 'Halloween,' 'Dawn of the Dead,' 'Day of the Dead' and 'Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn.'
Though Starz (formerly Anchor Bay) has taken considerable flak in the past for its standard-def DVD practice of "double-dipping" multiple versions of the same title with different bonus features, their first wave of Blu-ray releases would seem to suggest a change in strategy.
All four titles will port over the lion's share of bonus material included on the various DVD editions, including audio commentaries, making-of documentaries and featurettes, deleted material, still galleries, trailers and more. Meanwhile, each of the Blu-ray versions will include a brand new, high-def exclusive "Fast Film Facts" subtitle track, which the studio says will feature pop-up trivia, historical info and cast & crew biographies.
Given the wealth of bonus content promised, it should come as no surprise that all of Starz's initial titles are set to hit Blu-ray on BD-50 dual-layer discs. Other tech specs include 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video and uncompressed PCM 5.1 audio on all four titles ('Dawn of the Dead' and 'Day of the Dead' are also set to include their original mono tracks in Dolby Digital).
Each title has a list price of $29.98.

Toshiba Firmware Ver. 2.5 has been released!
Most notable change is the 1080p/24fps update for the XA2 and A20 for applicable displays.
I'm burning the CD now and am going to try it out!

There is a new firmware for the A2, but it's only cosmetic stuff (they did add an RGB video level option if you are using a PC...at list I "think" it's new).
The 1080p/24 is only for the A20 and XA2.
EDIT: I did notice that a lot of the camera pans in 'King Kong' were smoothed out with the 1080p/24fps upgrade...since the 24fps is what HD-DVD is encoded in. There's no longer any "judder" in the pans as the A20 and XA2 took the 24fps signal on the disc, converted to 1080i/60, and then deinterlaced to 1080p/60 (only a little conversion, no?). MGM can go **** themselves...........................I bet they charge $27-$30+ for this too. Good thing that I bought the new Collector's Edition that came out last month on DVD.
'RoboCop' Blu-ray Gets New Transfer, But No Extras
Over a year later, MGM is finally returning to the scene of the crime, and the good news is that specs released by the studio indicate a brand new high-def transfer for the title's October 9th Blu-ray bow. Apparently minted from a cleaned up version of the film's unrated cut, MGM says the upcoming BD-25 single-layer release will feature 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 video, as well as a new DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio 5.1 Surround track.
However, in a move that's sure to frustrate fans, the set's sole bonus feature will be a theatrical trailer -- this, despite the fact that MGM released a feature-packed two-disc special edition of the film on standard DVD in late August, and even the earlier cancelled Blu-ray featured an audio commentary, a documentary and deleted scenes.

It's still kind of too early to tell. At one point it looked like BD was going to win, but with Paramount going HD-DVD exclusive there was a balance that occured between both. If your on the fence, I would try to stick it out till the holidays.....I think right around then is when we might start getting an idea of which side might be winning this format war. Both formats are great, but I guess one format would be nice. Around Christmas time, the $179 HD-DVD players will be releasing.Comment

I agree with Candy. For now, the "War" is going to be going on for the next year or 2 at least. HD-DVD could be the victor due to pricing, and the fact that the PS3 is selling so poorly, it's carrying blu-ray essentially. Who knows, I have both, I would say if you can afford it to do the same, but most can't.
For me, I was more HD-DVD because of Universal, which has a majority of the movies that I enjoy.
HD-DVD has Universal, Parmount and Weinstein Group.
Blu-ray has Sony/Columbia/MGM, Fox, Lionsgate, and Disney
Warner and New Line are both multi.Comment

I'm a huge sports gamer and as you can probably tell, I'm not too happy with some of the PS3 sports games getting the shaft so far. I guess I'm trying to justify my PS3 purchase. If Blu-ray can win this thing, obviously I will feel a lot better. I have the money to purchase both systems, but to me, it just doesn't make sense to have 2 next-gen systems. I know I'm in the minority on that, but that is just how I feel.
I have been asking questions around the 'net about the PS3, because if this stuff keeps up, I might have no choice but to go back to the 360.
What are your thoughts on this? Should I wait one year? Couple years? Do you guys think the PS3 is going straight downhill or can it make a huge comeback next year like some people think??
