I might just keep it for awhile even if I just use it as my upconverter (I have an A2, BTW). I did get 300 today in the mail from Best Buy and I've been itching to watch it...
I intially panicked and put some of my movies on ebay. But then I saw the bloodbath on hidefdigest.com and saw HD-DVDs that retail for $35-40 going for $9-15, I decided to keep my A2 and just load up on the movies I really liked. Ended up getting 8 movies for less than $70 shipped.

Could have gotten a lot more, but decided not to go crazy with Christmas bills and student loans to pay back.

Interesting news Heel......wonder what could be in that contract that could let them out.

        Edit: Here it is

However, Paramount, which is owned by Viacom, is understood to have a clause in its contract with the HD DVD camp that would allow it to switch sides in the event of Warner Bros backing Blu-ray, according to people familiar with the situation.

Yeah. I at least know not to replace my SD-DVDs with HD. I will just pick up movies I didn't already have and enjoy them in HD for the next 2-3 years, since I'm sure SD-DVD will still be the big dominant format for at least the next 2 years - unless bluray really cuts down costs.

If a get out clause was involved, that has to go down as one of the dumbest decisions ever in negotiating a contract. Would rank up there with Michael Strahan's pre-nup agreement.

            Definitely an act of desperation.

HDD.com has always had HD-DVD as their first forum under the smackdown forums and then BluRay. Then just a few minutes ago they place the BluRay forums above the HD-DVD ones and people are very upset.

I just read through that post on that forum. People need to chill out, my God. So they moved the forums, you'd think people had their houses broken in the way they were reacting.

Blu-ray is winning, it's first alphabetically, it's eventually probably going to be the only one left, etc. I saw someone say the same thing over there. There's a number of reasons it could have been moved.

They were getting so upset about it, it's inevitable that they could have done it for alphabetical reasons or maybe they figured that since the war in HDD's eyes could be over switch the spots. Not a big deal, everyone over there should be glad that they didn't take down the forums.......that is much worse.

I ended up using the BOGO with the HP movies (adding on the 5th one at regular price) and am getting all 5 for about 60 bucks...not too shabby at all!

With HD-DVD/Blu-Ray I just hope Blu-Ray wins decisively now...I'd hate for something to swing back for HD and just keep the battle going. I didn't care who won, I just want a clear winner you know?

I think that is what everyone wants now, because if 1 more studio jumps to the HD-DVD camp from Sony per say as an example..........HDM will be dead. I love Toshiba and their products, but at this point in the game they need work something out with the 800lb gorilla for this technology to move forward. If anyone could make solid hardware for Sony, I think its Toshiba.

From Bill Hunt at Digitial Bits

Well... we've had SOME confirmation this morning of the details of the Financial Times story from last night. While the studio isn't yet commenting, reliable industry sources are telling us that Paramount is indeed preparing to end their HD-DVD support and announce a return to the Blu-ray fold. Details are currently being finalized, and an announcement is expected as soon as they're complete. Paramount's first new Blu-rays will almost certainly include many of those titles that were cancelled last year, but that were already packaged and ready for shipping, so you could see them in stores very quickly once the studio announces.

Meanwhile, sources are telling us that Universal has also been talking with the BDA, and is looking to follow Paramount and Warner's lead as soon as possible.

On a related note, Times Online in the U.K. is now reporting that as many as 20 additional firms currently backing HD-DVD are also considering defection in the wake of Warner's Friday announcement, including Fujitsu, Lenovo, Kenwood and Pony Canyon (which is a major Japanese film and music studio).

What's more, word is starting to circulate at CES that major big box retailers will begin winding down in-store support for HD-DVD as soon as these studios go public with their decisions. We're told that the industry's major retail partners are already pressuring Paramount, DreamWorks and Universal to go Blu following Warner's decision.

Rumors are also beginning to circulate here that Apple's Steve Jobs may announce the addition of Blu-ray Disc drives to their Mac desktop lineup at next week's Macworld Expo in San Francisco.

We would caution you to keep in mind that all of this should be considered unofficial until the studios make their actual announcements. Things are moving very fast, and the situation is highly fluid. Still, it really looks like this is the end for HD-DVD, and the end of the format war overall. We'll keep you up to date with new developments as they break.

No offense to anyone, but I'd never take Bill Hunt's word. That guy is one of the fakest people I've ever seen have a popular site. I stopped reading Digital Bits years ago because of his ego.

So where's the post for "What to do with all of these worthless HD-DVD Players?"

Particularly, for the Xbox 360 HD-DVD Drive. What a waste. Should of seen the nail in the coffin when the prices of those suckers started to drop.

One last note this evening: That idea I floated yesterday, that the BDA should offer an olive branch to HD-DVD consumers? I mentioned it to senior BDA executives this evening, and I think you can safely say that they're going to move forward with something along these very lines in the weeks ahead. We'll post more when we can, but the idea was definitely warmly received. In fact, plans are already in the works. We'll post more on this as things develop.
