You seem to know a lot about the Mac products and I have a question for you.
I'm interested in picking up a Mac Book pro. Currently, I have been dissuaded by the current offerings. I'd actually prefer the 13" model, because it is lighter and more compact...easier to transport and not as unweildy. My issue, though, is that I am not satisfied with the current specs of the 13" model. It seems like purchasing a computer with a chip set that is already outdated would be a mistake.

Do you know if Apple plans to put the I5 chip in the 13" Pros for the next update? My gut tells me they will and I will be able to exercise patience until then. But then again, they won't update for like another 5 months right? So that is a long time to wait!

I check sites dedicated to the Apple community everyday (such as TUAW and MacRumors) but there hasn't been any indication that the i5/i7 chips would make its way to the 13" Pros. The last refresh was around April if I'm not mistaken and I highly-doubt Apple would bump the specs up again within the year.

The Mac Mini just got a refresh and an all-new design. Looks pretty slick. Powerful too. $699 USD. With education discount, $650.

So glad to see they're not giving up on the Mac Mini. I just graduated from college, and my four-year-old MacBook 1.1 (yes... 1.1... lol) is still going strong after a recent update to Snow Leopard. But as soon as I can get a real job and the cash to upgrade, I'm interested in the Mac Mini. I just love that price and how small and moveable the machine is. Hell, you could set up keyboard and monitor in two or three locations and just move the computer and wireless mouse if you want to use it in multiple spots.

You get an iPod touch but I don't know what capacity they'll give you. As for color choices, you're out of luck. If you feel strongly about it, there are cases which you can buy to cover it and thus, give it "color."

Damn... the 15" is the one she has haha.

is there really a big difference between the i5/i7 and dual core processor? Im not really a computer guy, i did a little research and, correct me if I am wrong, but essentially the difference is if both are 2.66, the i5 actually runs at 3.33 and the i7 is higher?

Im planning on buying a macbook pro, and I am trying to decide which one either a 13 inch or a 15 inch. Im going to be using it for school, but I will be editing video and doing some serious stuff on it, but I also have a mac desktop that is more than capable so Im not sure if I really need to replace my desk top per say, but It would be nice to bring capabilites on the road with me.

Same. I am thinking of buying the 13" or the 15" but my sister has the 15" so I might go with the 13"... but really I think the 15 inch is stronger and more powerful so I don't know. There's no way I can get it in black or something? I want it to look at least unique with my sister's cause yeah...

Just buy the 15" if you want. Who cares if your sister has it? Plenty of other people have it also. You're about to be in college, grow up a bit.

The only way to get it in a color is to go through a place like Colorware, but it's not worth it, IMO. Doesn't look as nice and costs way too much.

They're just as good, so long as the technical specifications meet your requirements.

Already posted in the other thread, but the polycarbonate unibody is not as strong as the aluminum found in the MBP - also, there are fewer ports, and the biggest difference... 2GB of RAM. Macbooks aren't worth it, go with a MBP.

I agree with all that. I'm just saying, if budget's an issue for people, they're still good computers. Obviously not as good as the more expensive models, but that much should be obvious.

How many people actually need more than 2 GB of memory? The typical person who surfs the web, checks e-mail, creates documents, listens to music, etc. is fine with 2 GB of RAM. The fewer USB ports can certainly be a PITA, but if your budget is $1000 and nothing more, the MacBook is certainly worth it.


Also::It's too bad it's not as simple to upgrade the RAM on MacBooks as it was before the unibody. My MacBook came with 512 MB of memory and I upgraded to 2 GB for 40$ on my own. You just plopped out the battery and popped the new memory sticks in place.
