Is I5 really worth it if all I do is basic word processing, web browsing, and music (I know the answer)? Think I'm going to get the 13 inch Macbook Pro as soon as it's available in Manhattan.

Co-sign. Bought mine around May '09 (13-inch Macbook - before it became a MBP) and it has served me well. I do work on it, some gaming (nothing too strenuous), photo editing, videos/music, video conversion and it does them well enough. I'll probably upgrade the RAM to 4GB since it only has 2GB right now and that should make this an even better machine than upgrading fully.

Of course back then, I actually paid a much higher price for what is now the base model of the MBP. Oh well, I don't regret it one bit.

My average has been around 95MB/month. I know for a fact that it would increase once I get an iPad. Good thing AT&T gives options instead of sucking you into a contract. Is the 3G connection just as fast when tethering?

If you had to pick one, would you rather have 3G service on your phone or on an iPad?
3G via tether is just as fast. I tested this on a bus and was able to watch Netflix while tethering in great quality.

Nah dude. I have the 'old' CoreDuo 2.4GHz and I am actually able to play some games on it (Team fortress, Mount & Blade). Thats with the 9400 card too. For what you want you can get the lowest end one and still be very happy.

After all that, I ended up getting the 15 inch base model that has I5. I did it more for the bigger screen than the faster processor.

I'm planning on buying the base model 15'' MBP that costs $1799. My question is, is it worth it to upgrade the screen to the Hi-Res Antiglare? I'm concerned that the glossy base screen will have too much glare for me to use it outside during the day. However, I have heard the Hi-Res screen is harder to read (with smaller text) and it is $140 extra. Then again, it's already a hefty purchase, so I want to do it right.

Anyone with either screen, please comment on its readability in sunlight, the size of text, or anything like that. Thanks

I'm looking to buy a new laptop, and I'm just wondering what you guys would suggest if I were to go with a Mac? Not really planning on it, but I don't know much about laptops or what not so I was just wondering what you guys would suggest if I were looking for a laptop where I could browse the internet, use for school, occasionally watch movies, etc. Again, that doesn't sound like something you'd buy a Mac for which is why I'm not too high on buying one although they do look pretty sleek, and I am a Mac fan (plan on buying the new iPhone)

Get either one of the entry-level Macbook Pros (13.3-inch, Core 2 Duo). You'll spend $1.2k at most and its specs are more than enough for your basic computing needs.

That sounds good. I'll quote myself in my 'Looking for a laptop' thread:

Yeah I don't know. I talked to a lot of people and most of the Mac users are just very convincing. I know it's not going to be worth the price if all I'm going to do is web surf, listen to music, etc. (some photo editing though, but not serious) but I plan on having this become my main computer to use, I might not have my desktop back when I go home because I might give it to my dad. So I want a laptop that I know can do anything without any problems. This is basically what I'm weighing on now.
See if that can help you guys give me advice.

My sister said hers cost $1,800 last year but IDK what happened there.

                      Also, what's I5 or I7?

An i5/i7 is a CPU. Those are used in the 15-inch and 17-inches Macbook Pros.

As for making it your main computer, it can very well replace your desktop. It can play 720p content fine, do office work, surf the web, edit videos (just nothing TOO intensive), as well play games (again, just nothing TOO intensive).

When's the best time to order my laptop? By the end of the month you think so I can get it mid-July and perhaps get more accustomed to it by the end of August (start of school)? What model would you suggest if I told you I wanted to have a medium-sized laptop, willing to spend up to $1,500, and looking for it ot do pretty much every thing. Perhaps some photography in the future?

Quite frankly, it doesn't matter when you order it but if you want to get accustomed to a Mac then I say do it as soon as you feel like buying it. It's not hard to learn the intricacies of it. For $1,500, you can go with the high-end 13-inch Macbook Pro.

2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor
                            320GB 5400-rpm hard drive
                            NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor
If you don't mind paying $300 extra, go with the entry-level 15-inch Macbook Pro. The speed-bump and larger screen is a major plus if you plan to delve into photography and editing.

                            2.4GHz Intel Core i5 processor
                            320GB 5400-rpm hard drive
                            Intel HD Graphics
NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M graphics processor with 256MB GDDR3 memory
Check this link out to decide for yourself. Make sure you get that free iPod since you're a student. I'm pretty sure you just have to show an ID or something of that sort.

Damn I think that's the notebook ($1800) that my sister has. The same exact one... don't want to have the same as her (stupid reasons). Anyways... any way to get it in black?

And what kind of iPod comes w/ it if you're a student?

I believe my sister already got a Touch last year, and she never used it so my brother is using it (8GB). I currently have an 80GB Classic which I love. And I believe I will be getting the iPhone this summer as well. Sooo yeah... I want a Macbook, but still not sure whether to get this cause my sister has it. Haha... sounds so dumb.

You get an iPod touch but I don't know what capacity they'll give you. As for color choices, you're out of luck. If you feel strongly about it, there are cases which you can buy to cover it and thus, give it "color."
