I wasn't crying I was yelling at incompentent at&t people. I'm going to give a real nice review later tonight. And yes im posting this from my iphone

Well maybe not crying... but I came away with the feeling you were almost there!

Either way, it's moot now as you got the sucker up and running!

There are some issues with the phone that I've read but the most glaring one (for me) is the lack of manual management of your music on other PC's. That's just a terrible decision. The shuffle is the only other device that does that. You would think for $600 you'd have the thing working as a damn iPod.

The smashmystuff.com people are based in Canada. That's why they haven't been able to get their hands on an iPhone. For all their smashmystuff.com projects they fundraise the money, line up on release day, and smash the thing right in front of all the other onlookers. There was nothing planned on their website for fundraising to smash an iPhone for that reason, probably.

My 24 hour iPhone Review

Alright I am going to attempt and review as much of this phone as I can, but I am sure I will miss some features, because this is a feature packed phone. This is my first 'smart phone,' so I am not completely familiar with features in other phones, so forgive me if I think something is really cool that has been around for a while

1. Purchasing/Activation: Purchasing the phone wasn't much of the problem. I waited a couple hours in line, and once I got to the register, I was there for 10 minutes, and out the door with my new iPhone. Pretty good experience in store. I then take it home, and attempt to activate my phone using the iTunes activation process. I fill out the paperwork, including all the information necessary for porting the number from Verizon. It goes through the process, and then tells me Activation will take longer, and to wait for an email stating my phone is now active. At first, I was ok, thinking that it would just take an hour or two maybe to get things sorted out. Hours began to tick by, and I have nothing. The thing that is most frustrating about this is that the iPhone is literally a brick until it is activated. NOTHING can be done except call 911. So you cant even play around with any of the options. Well once I hit the 4 hour mark, I started calling people. ATT told me to be patient, get some sleep, and it should be ready to roll in the morning. Morning comes, no activation. I am beyond pissed and begin a LONG day of holding and talking to incompetent AT&T reps. After 8 hours of getting no where, I finally get a rep who cancels my activation request, sets up a new activation request and gave me a brand new AT&T number. Then immediately transferred my Verizon number. Bingo. Problem solved in 10 minutes.
   Rating: I can't assign a valid letter grade, because it was literally one of the worst experiences of my life. F-------
   
   
2. Contacts List: I have never enjoyed scrolling through my phone book. With the iPhone, its so EASY to scroll through using your finger, and clicking someones card. In their card, you can call any number, email, get directions to their home, etc, all without scrolling, just touching the button. Its very intuitive. The layout is great, and easy to navigate.

3. Visual Voicemail: Simply put, this is how voicemail will be done from here on out. Never again will I need to listen to 8 messages to get to the one I want to hear. I just simply click the voicemail I want to listen to, and check it out. At anytime, I can touch a button that allows me to call the person who left the voicemail back

4. Text Messaging: Great layout. Text conversations are kept separate, and you view them in what appears to be an IM conversation. Looks great, and functions as intended. Best texting experience I have ever had on a cell phone.

5. Calendar: Nothing special. Syncs over from my iCal, and allows me to view and add events. Pretty standard.

6. Photos/Camera: Takes decent photos. Its not exactly a digital camera replacement (no flash, only 2 megapixals), but it does a good job as a camera phone. The photos app allows to view pictures from the camera, or even from your computer. The photos from your computer look GREAT on the iPhone screen, and is a great way to show off the kids to some co workers.
   Camera: C+ (compared to digital camera) B (compared to camera phones)

7. Google Maps: A simply OUTSTANDING feature. I don't know how I would live without it now. For example, I typed "Auburn, AL, pizza," and all the pizza joints in auburn popped up. From this screen, I can click the information tab, which allows me to call the place up from that screen, view the place's website, or even get directions to/from the location. Great feature, especially when I move out to a new city in August. This feature works great on a Wi-Fi network, and is not bad on the EDGE network.

8. iPod: As Steve Job says, "Its the best iPod we have ever made." I cant argue with that. Is so easy and intuitive to navigate through your song lists using your finger. This is definitely the future for the iPod. Only a matter of time before touch screen iPod are on the market. The speaker on the phone obviously isnt great for playing music, but its decent. The ear phones are the best way to go when listening to the music. Only an 8GB harddrive, so for you music buffs out there with huge music collections, it wont all fit on a first generation iPhone. It can hold about 2000 songs.
   Rating: A- (only because of the small harddrive. The software is second to none)
   
   
   
   
9. Safari: There isnt a mobile browser on the market that can even hold a candle to this browser. It is amazing. When using a Wi-Fi connection, it is flawless. However, when switching to EDGE, there are mixed (and sometimes frustrating) results. Some sites take 15-20 seconds to load, and I have become to aquatinted to cable internet for that to be acceptable. It seems to vary dramatically, so I guess network traffic is a big deal. When 3G is put into the next set of phones, this will be amazing and will almost replace the need to carry a laptop around.
   Rating: A- (Great mobile browser experience on a Wi-Fi network, slow on the EDGE. When 3G is applied, this will be a A+++++++ app)
   
   
   
   
10. Keyboard: I have never had a phone with a full QWERTY keyboard, so I cant really compare the difference between a virtual keyboard and a physical keyboard. I can say however that I might actually be able to type faster on the virtual keyboard then I can even type on a computer keyboard. The intelligence in the keyboard is AMAZING. If you accidently type an incorrect letter, it will AUTOMATICALLY correct the error and your word will be spelled right. This isnt your standard spell check. It is a HUGE branching algorithm that 'feels' where you typed, and later decides you meant to type a different character or combination of characters. This is very difficult to explain, and is one of those things that you have to see to believe.

11. OVERALL: This is an amazing device. I have had several people make the following comment:
    
    "I knew it would be a cool device, but I never thought I would absolutely HAVE to have one after playing with it. Well now that I have seen it, I HAVE to have it."
    
    It really is the truth. Once you play with it for about 20 minutes, there really is no going back.
    
    Negatives: The main negative is EDGE network. I really think this would be close to a perfect product if 3G was included from the beginning, but I can understand the cause for concern regarding battery life. The camera at 2 megapixels wont be replacing anyone's digital camera either. Once Apple releases this phone with a 3-4 megapixel camera, a 20GB harddrive, and 3G network, there will be zero flaws with this product.
    
    Positives: The whole experience using the phone is positive. There are so many features that are elegantly designed that its just ridiculous. People are literally amazed at the UI and how flawless it is. The touch screen technology is incredible. The software in this phone is EASILY the best in the mobile industry.
    
    
    The only reason to not get this phone is if its simply not economical for you to purchase it. If you have the funds, this will be a great experience. With microsoft exchange support coming in Q3, that should make it a lot easier for the business people to come over to the iPhone. This product could really become like the iPod in 3-4 years, where everyone will have one. If you havent gotten to play with one, find a friend with one or go to your ATT/Apple store and play with it. They are a lot of fun.
    
    
    I didnt touch on a lot of other features (youtube/stocks/weather/calc/clock) because I am simply tired of typing, and i know I have missed other features, but if you have any questions, ASK AWAY.

Great review! I can certainly see myself getting one in a few years after my Verizon contract is up and Apple and AT&T work out the kinks.

While I think a lot of people had problems and the blame could probably be put on ATT, Apple and the porting process but to say it was the worst experiences of your life.

Let's face it, when a product launches it's far from perfect. I think they handled this as best as they could. Now it took far too long but everyone had their phone activated withen 24 hours. Plus we still don't know why it took so long. I'm going to hold judgement until we find out more. It seems that the majority of people that had problems were porting their number from other services.

I'm not defending Apple or ATT. It shouldn't have taken that long but to use such hyperbole on such a trivial product is nonsense.

the problem was the sheer lack of knowledge by the reps. They knew nothing. One rep would say one thing, then transfer me to someone who would say something completely different. If they would have just told me what was the problem ilup front, I would have been ok. My problem is that everyone sounded clueless and totally unprepared

What do you mean by that? There are already smartphones and there are already phones out there with the touch screen stuff.

I just read an article in the Chicago Tribune business section how the Iphone is putting pressure on other cell phone manufacturers to put out something similar. I assume they have been doing that and can't be too far off.

My cell phone can basically do everything the iphone can do, so I don't see the big deal at all. My phone was free and is just a phone. I can view the web, I can listen to MP3's, I can text message, I can listen to my voice mail, take pictures, etc.
