To be honest I'm not entirely sure, but we have plenty of time to find out. The article says the TiVo units won't be available until the second half of 2009.

And that is when I will switch.

In fairness it's much better now than it was when DTV launched it:

Just a quick update - my opinion has gone from "serviceable" to "barely tolerable".

The DirecTV HR20 has only been available for a short time, and in it's current state it is the buggiest piece of home electronic equipment I have ever seen. I've experienced freezes, audio dropouts, programs that claim to have been recorded that turn out to be nothing but a black screen, and now the freaking thing has started cancelling recordings for no apparent reason.

A poster over at DBSTalk.com described it best when he called it "a Beta, and a fairly early one at that". It's obvious DTV pushed this thing out the door before it was ready, hoping to "fix it on the back end" via software updates. The basics are there to make it a very good DVR, but as it stands now it simply cannot be relied upon to do it's job as designed. Anyone considering getting one might want to wait a few months for some of it's more glaring issues to be resolved.

I miss TiVo.

If i'm switching from Comcast to DTV, any chance I could get a 2nd HD DVR for free if I twist some arms on the phone? I'll pay $74.99/month for four months, then once that ends, I'll be able to get the premiere package for free since I now work for a distributor of DTV. I'm thinking about holding out until I can get my hands on the HR22 though.

Quick question, i just got DTV a couple of weeks ago, got the package that has all the channels but, im not getting ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox on HD. Anyone know whats with that?

Sounds like your dish doesn't pick up local channels.

I get local channels, it's just i dont get them on HD. I called a tech while watching the games Sunday and he said something about signing a waiver or something to get them, so i just said screw it ill call back some other time but never got a chance.

You have to request a waiver from your local channel affiliates through Direc TV... This entitles you to get East or West programming in HD..I can tell you from experience getting a waiver is hard to do because your local affiliates want you to watch their programming so they deny your request for a waiver...chances are slim and none..lol

Exactly, I tried to do this because I couldnt get CBS in HD here in Oregon but I got everything else and they wouldnt approve my request to get the LA feed for CBS instead. Directv told me it takes a minimum of 2 months for the decision as well so unless they improved upon this, be prepared to wait awhile. At some point in the last month or so CBS was added in HD finally so Im not sure what happened but it finally got taken care of so maybe there is hope as long as your patient.

They never told me that they charged for it but its a service more geared towards people who cant get their locals at all, not for the people who cant get their locals in HD and thats why I doubt you get it approved since you can get your locals but only in SD.

Well that ****ing sucks. I have to watch football and basketball games on SD, do you realize how hard that is? luckily the baseball playoffs are on TBS.

I only get Fox in HD because my local channels signed an exclusive deal with Comca$$$$$$$$$t. Truthfully I don't even think it is legal for them to deny programming to DirecTV.

That was my problem with all CBS NFL games up until recently, so I know exactly what your saying.

This is what I was told as well back when I couldnt get CBS in HD so apparently the deal was up or some agreement was worked out because Ive had it now for atleast a few weeks.
