Another thing I didn't mention in my last post: The show has somehow managed to almost make me dislike Matt Saracen, or at the very least be indifferent towards his character. He was arguably my favorite last season. He seemed like a real genuine nerdy kind of kid, and he has been out sorts this season. Either he doesn't get much screen time or is stuck in these little romantic subplots. The thing with the caregiver doesn't do much for me, but I can tolerate it. What I don't understand at all, though, is why they even bothered to introduce the other chick into the equation. Before she came onto the scene, you could clearly tell they were going in the direction of something happening between him and Carlotta or whatever her name is. Then he suddenly starts macking the new chick, and then drops her within 2 episodes. I fail to see the point of even having her on the show at all, unless it is to try and "get over" the fact that Saracen is now some playa. It just falls pretty flat for me.

I really miss the interaction between he and "Lance." I hope now with this murder thing being put to bed that they can get back to some semblance of what those two did together last year. By the way, is Landry even on the team anymore? He had one moment where he made a big play in a game, which was pretty ridiculous in itself, complete with the crowd chanting his name (as if they would have a clue who the hell he even was), and then suddenly he isn't even at practice or anything. Sloppy writing at its finest.
I see your point. They needed the cheerleader for 2 reasons: 1) To make Julie jealous after things didnt work out with the Swede and 2) To show that Matt was beginning to accept his QB1 status and the perks that come with it.

I think it would have been silly if Matt would have stayed the same nerdy kid he was last year. He's the starting QB on a state championship team in a town that worships him. I loved the interaction with him and Smash at the beginning of the year. You could see he was no longer willing to play second fiddle. He wanted to be that man on the Panthers and was sick of Smash taking all the attention. Thats exactly how a starting QB on a state championship team would act.

That part actually is great (him not wanting to play second fiddle). I just feel there is still room for both. Maybe it is primarily because he has been stuck in these romantic situations all season, but his character just doesn't resonate the way it did last season, with the exception of a few moments. His interaction with Smash early on was great, even though the on field fight was pretty lame. Even recently, when he had to pick him up from the recruiting trip, was classic, too, with the "So, was it like Cabo in your pants?" line. I think they just need to get him out from under the weight of the relationship crap for a while, though.

No doubt, but aholbert has a good point, too. This town LIVES for its high school football team. Playing as a Panther is lifelong dream for any boy in Dillon, and those who played for the Panthers and those who wish they did still live vicariously through these players.

To me this show was good last year, and is still damn good. Of course its catered to my age and my taste. However both my parents watch it too and love it. The complaint I have is that they are showing less and less football, and going very heavy on the drama this year. Still a must watch every week to me though.

I think last year that there was more football early on because the writers didn't know how many episodes would air. If I'm remembering last year correctly, the early episodes had more football then the later episodes, because once they got picked up for the whole season most of the games had been played (is this even correct?). This year they know that they are writing 22 episodes and have to stretch the football season for all 22, also they may not be playing as many games as they played last year.

Bingo, I think the Writers didn't think this would be picked up for another season and have been left scrambling a little bit. Have other dramas had a "sophomore slump" only to come back strong later on?

They still don't know what to do with Tyra. First she was the manipulative slut, then she took on Julie as a friend with an ear, now she actually had mature feelings for her old tutor?

One thing we do have to remember is how much kids change in high school. I was pretty different kid my senior year than I was my sophomore one.

Riggins is definitely going to get with Tami's sister.

Ugh, that ending. I liked the new and improved Taylor household with Riggins and coach playing ping pong at 5AM. Julie had to go ruin everything again. Great episode nonetheless.
