Re: Friday Night Lights Season 2
But this season needs more football. Friday night's show was an example. Zero football, but a ton of volleyball. It is nice to see Tyra and Tami Taylor in tight T-shirts, though.
"Friday Night Lights" is coming perilously close to jumping the shark for me. It has gone from a great, story-driven drama about life in a small town to a vehicle for the writers to try to expose and explore every possible political topic through the folks of Dillon. Let's see: This season we have racial tension (Smash and his sister vs. the white kids of Dillon), the religious right (Lyla), the crystal meth scourge (Riggins' old landlord), working moms trying to make ends meet (Tami Taylor) and minority kids left behind rescued by rich white dudes (Santiago and Buddy).
And as I wrote earlier in this thread, the writers insist on putting each of these plots on an equal platform. The show is getting really muddy and losing its stride.
I'm still watching, but it's not as enjoyable as last season. Maybe the "new car smell" of the show -- pardon the Buddy Gerety pun -- is wearing off. Or maybe shows like "Mad Men" and "Breaking Bad" have raised the bar for TV drama for me in the last nine months. Probably a bit of both.
Take care,

Re: Friday Night Lights Season 2
I always would wince during the first season when I read forum posts requesting "more football." There seemed to be at least a couple of football segments in every show during the first season; football always was an undercurrent of the show. It was enough for me.

I loved last season but I thought the paced it horribly when it came to football. It seemed like the writers showed to many games at the beginning of the season and then had to go 5-6 episodes without a game at times. This year seems better since we are only at episode 14 and have already seen 5 games (2 with the old coach and 3 w/ Taylor). Plenty of football to finish the season with and it looks like we will get a full season now that the writers strike is close to ending.
Second, we have to remember that people like us are the primary viewers of this program. FNL does much better ratings wise with females from 25-54 than it does with males in the same range. Almost a million more females watch this show than men so they have to cater to that demo.Comment

Re: Friday Night Lights Season 2
There are multiple problems with putting more football into the show. First, they will run into the problem they had last year in that the season is 22 episodes and at most there are only 11 games in a HS season (8 regular and 3 playoff). That means at the least half of the episodes wont have games in them. Now unless the writers have Dillon go to state every year, most seasons will have less than 10 episodes involving football games.

Re: Friday Night Lights Season 2
It's not just show more games, but show more with practices and just football related storylines.Originally posted by Jay BilasThe question isn't whether UConn belongs with the elites, but over the last 20 years, whether the rest of the college basketball elite belongs with UConnComment

Also, we now have the storyline with Smash getting arrested and the repercussions that will have on his spot on the team and if he'll still have his scholarship offer.Comment

Re: Friday Night Lights Season 2
Exactly. I'll be the first one to admit that the non football stories are at the forefront but that was the case last year too. Street's injury recovery, the Street/Lyla/Riggins Triangle, the Riggins/Tyra relationship and Julie/Saracen relationship were all major storylines and were non football related.Comment
