Dec. 4-The summer blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is released on DVD. If it does as well as Dead Man's Chest (which had almost $5 million in sales its first day on the shelves), long-time Pirates scribes Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio can expect a little less than $6,700 in writing residuals under the current system.

In case you haven't done the math that means Elliot and Rossio will make 0.134% of the revenue collected from DVD sales.

    How is that fair?
They had the choice to not join the guild.

What is the focal point of the writer's complaint? I think that is something that could be worked out in negotiations. If the writers went the "just profit" route then it would be a higher percentage starting at 2.5% with escalators. If they went the "total sales" route then it would be 1.0% with escalators.

And what if movie/television studios choose to hire writers who only belong to the guild?

If there's more talent outside of the guild, the guild loses power. Or they can go independent.

I wish I could say I could agree with you, but the backdoor handshakes and pressures to join guilds and/or unions have too many lucrative benefits for people to pass up.

Then don't complain when the same folks go out an do something stupid like agree to get $.04 per media sales. They're striking now because their "ho asses" want some DVD money, and then in 10 years they'll be striking because they want some internet money.

If they didn't have writers the movie wouldn't have been made.

There is no reason that they shouldn't get a bigger cut of the money and since they're on strike production has shut down. I don't see how you can get angry at people for wanting a fair cut for what they do.

Um, no...right now they're striking because they want some internet money...they didn't fight for DVD money in the past and ended up getting raped. Now they see that they'd get basically no money for internet sales and that's crap.

Just look now...Hollywood's coming to a halt without these writers. If writers don't matter at all, why not just find non-guild writers and keep going? Write Lost with new people...write Heroes with new people.

I would imagine that has something to do with the actor's guild and their relations with the writers.

Personally, I believe that the networks should hold out on both. It could destroy TV for the foreseeable future, but it would at least destroy the writers guild.

Yeah, I'm on the other side...The TV networks can afford to cut off a tiny slice of their massive profits and give them to the writers. I dunno, I guess I have trouble rooting for the TV networks when I know they're giving the little guy a raw deal. Writers deserve a fair deal. Without the guild writers would get treated even worse...I suppose it's hard to understand if you don't know or have experience with any writers.

Not every writer makes the money that the Lost, Heroes, etc writers do. This is really a fight for the lower end writers who write for peanuts. I'm sure Tina Fey makes quite a bit of money and this doesn't impact her quite as much.

I don't care about any of the writers. My three favorite shows are ending this year, and one of them (Scrubs) was already destroyed by the writers. I hope the strike ruins Heroes and Lost, if nothing else just to spite their fans. If the TV networks hold out long enough, the writers will crumble and hopefully be left with an even worse deal.

If you say so, but I don't see how that's possible. The writers even have over 95% of the "talent" on their side. We'll see how the studios react to the backlash that is bound to come there way when audience's favorite shows get cancelled for the season.

The writers won't go anywhere, if the networks don't have the support of the writers or the actors then it's going to be hard for them to make any money.
