I saw the movie yesterday. It just missed the hype, but was a very good movie. The first half was great. The dog scene was the most emotional scene since Mufasta died. The apartment scene was scary as hell times three. So intense.

Re: I Am Legend
SpoilerI thought it was kinda dumb how Neville was still smart enough to find the cures but not to realize this was the Alpha Male's girl. I don't see anythign wrong with this one being smarter or stronger or anything. He was the leader, every species has alpha males that happen to be the leader. The others are smart enough to know when to be beckoned by him when he sics them on Neville and whatnot, so they aren't totally void of brains, they just are more primative. The trap stretched it, but still within reason in my opinion. I think the director wanted us to know that Robert doesn't know as much as he thinks about these monsters. There is so much hidden and I disagree with the notion that the movie specificlly wants it to be known that all the creatures are completely de-evolved.Comment

Re: I Am Legend
SpoilerYes. It's possible that Alpha Male wanted to kill Neville and save the girl. If Neville wasn't aware of her importance to the male then he would have never acknowledged her. So it makes sense that it was ignored. But, either way, there should have been some kind of mention.
I think what's missing was an opportunity to see things from the infected's eyes. We only got one perspective and because of that we lose out on their intentions."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: I Am Legend
Well, I saw the movie this morning (gogogo downloads!) and was completely blown away. I loved every second of the movie and it's definitely the type of movie that evokes thinking and discussion. Thankfully, I can watch any scene over again if I'm confused on something.Originally posted by EWRMETSMaybe the best post in OS's history. Re: I Am Legend
saw it last friday, i liked it. it was a great mental thriller to me. i think there were not holes in the film, only things left out for the viewers imagination and interpretation. the one thing that bothered me for like the first half of the movie was my wondering why neville didn't just get on a boat and leave? but later you realize he has nothing to leave and go to and he is INTENT on finishing his work on a cure. great movie.Comment

SpoilerSince we never see the infected side all we see them as are predators. Its like Alien, they seem like monsters at first but as the story goes on you find out they are smarter than that.
Who knows what goes on, there could be a whole society behind the darkness...we just never see it. In the book Neville becomes a Legend to the infected, which is why it is called 'I Am Legend'. Just like how the Vampire is a legend to us, or Bigfoot or any other myth.
Also I am pretty sure the women(alpha female) was behind the glass I may be wrong though.
Also about the Vermont base...how would the infected get there? Think about it, they can't survive in the sun, they would have to only travel at night, and find some serious shelter in nature. No animal on Earth is killed from the Sun, all life on Earth depends on the Sun so the urban area of NYC is perfect for their survival.Comment

We only got one perspective and because of that we lose out on their intentions.SpoilerI found myself saying "show him! show him the girl!" in reference to when Neville was behind the glass and the alpha started crashing it. I kept expecting Neville to shove the op-table towards the glass so that the alpha would have no choice but to acknowledge the change in the female's condition.
But then that couldn't happen because Neville is clueless to the female's importance to the lead mutant. Likewise, the alpha is completely oblivious to her being right there on the table.
That was really frustrating and weakened the ending quite a bit for me personally. There was so much unrealized potential there for a more powerful ending. Like...the alpha acknowledging the female and calming down briefly -showing signs of compassion and understanding - while Neville yells "See? I can save you! Let me save you!" - then suddenly the alpha's instincts take hold again and he continues crashing the glass. At THAT point, the current ending kicks in with Neville realizing there truely was nope hope for the dark-seekers - making his decision to sacrifice himself...Comment

Re: I Am Legend
saw this movie tonight, and I'm not really a horror-thriller type person so parts of it scared the **** out of me.
Still, I thought it was pretty good and now I want to read the book. I have questions for those of you who have read the book:
Spoilerum, OK, the first encounter with the dark-seekers when they're huddled around each other and breathing heavy, um, what the **** were they doing?
this was brought up on another message board I visit, but what about the trap that was set for Neville? was the Fred mannequin moved by the dark-seekers, or did Neville move it as he was slowly going insane? The dark-seekers were portrayed as beings with little to no intelligence so if they're so unintelligent how did they set a trap? also, when Neville first passes the mannequin in the movie, it appears that the head moves. So is Neville going insane or was the trap set by the things?
I also wanted more back story on the virus and how the world dealt with it, not just NYC. Like how long after it was implemented did they realize that it turned people in those things?
how much more detail does the book go into? There are so many things that I envision were explained in the book that weren't in the movie and if that's the case I'll go pick it up tomorrow.Lux y VeritasComment

The darkseekers set the trap and moved the mannequin. He saw Fred at the video store the day before or whatever. Yeah, he's losing it, but he's not so far gone that he can't remember something that happened a day ago. He's only crazy enough to see Fred move.
The movie switches between making the darkseekers appear reasonable and mindless too much. This and the tacked-on, hollywood, happy, hopeful ending are the two problems that keep this movie from being really good. I think they would have been better off using real actors and making it more clear that they were intelligent. Then, the movie could have had a more substantial ending where Neville gets to wrestle with the morality of whether they actually need a "cure."
Or, you know...They could have gone a totally different direction and made it like the book.Comment

SpoilerI know they always breathe heavy, that was made clear, but why were they standing around each other? is that how they sleep/rest, or were they communicating in some way or what's going on there?
also, maybe I'm an idiot, but I never made the connection that the male leader was attached the female that Neville captured. I always just assumed he wanted to get Neville because he was still human and not infected.Lux y VeritasComment

I think in the book, they just sleep during the day. I think in that scene they are eating a deer?
Here are a few questions/problems:
1. In the scene mentioned above, how did they not see him? Do you realize how sensitive to light you are when when you are in the pitch black? They would of seen that light from so far away, especially when it is shining right on your backside.
2. What was the reason for the whole, "look at the butterfly" crap? Was that an attempt to make it have a faith-aspect? M. Night Shyamalan?
3. Also, how did the women and the kid get to NY? Wasn't the whole area blocked off? And all the bridges blown up? You telling me they came across on a boat? Didn't they say they drove all the way there? And how the hell would a little boy survive? Highly unlikely.
4. Why are all new-age zombie movies have people with super-human strength? I mean, I understand they are aggressive, but seriously? Come on.
5. Why didn't Will Smith throw the nade, and get into the escape hole as well?
6. Was hunting a deer really that important?
7. Where the hell are all the dead bodies or skeletons?
8. Why the hell didn't the colony contact Neville? They contacted the girl and where the hell was she from?
Oh and to clear some things up for others:
1. The director confirms the trap was made by the Alpha Male.
2. This was the original ending: 'Then, when Neville finally turns the alpha female over to the alpha male, there is this little love moment between the two of them. That was another very tricky bit of business to get just right.' Having secured what they came for -- the alpha female -- the infected spare Neville's life, and he, Anna and the boy leave Manhattan, hoping to find other survivors in the outside world. The last shot follows their car traveling over what is left of the George Washington Bridge -- a shot comprised of aerial photography and digital environmental elements."Comment

Re: I Am Legend
Well in the movie Neville after all of his studies say they are completely void of typicsl human behavior, yet they set traps as a human would and did, then turn and they mindlessly bash their skulls against windsheild like glass.
Yeah umm, makes a ton of sense to me!Comment
