This new Kendrick is dope. More Section.80 than GKMC as far as the sound and that's fine with me. Standout tracks to me so far: Hood Politics, King Kunta, Blacker the Berry and Mortal Man gives me chills. Really wish the untitled song he performed on Colbert was on the album, or at least put it up for download.

Just finished my first listen of TPAB. Damn. That **** is an experience. GKMC was as well, but this is completely different from that. I like what I seen someone say on Twitter that GKMC was like a John Singleton movie while TPAB is like a Spike Lee movie. I think that's pretty accurate.

The album itself isn't really radio or casual friendly, so it'll be interesting to see how that plays out. I think a lot of people are going to dismiss it early on because they're expecting more songs like Swimming Pools, Bitch, Don't Kill My Vibe, etc, and that's too bad because as an entire piece of work, this is pretty amazing. It's not just a collection of songs. Everything flows together seamlessly and each track seems to work better following the previous one rather than just listening to it on it's on. For example, King Kunta. When that released just before the album came out last night, I didn't care too much for it. Hearing it within the context of the album though makes me appreciate it a lot more.

That's something that's so impressive to me about Kendrick. His craftsmanship is arguably the best in the game. Not many rappers, or just artists in general, seem to construct albums the way he has so far. He actually makes it feel like it's worth dropping $12 (or whatever the price is) on an album, which says a lot nowadays.

Same experience I had with "i". Even though I heard and was with the message, I just wasn't feeling it until I heard it within the context of the whole album. Love how every track bleeds and flows into the next one.

I echo blue and trob this new Kdot album is definitely one to be enjoyed as a whole. That ending blew me away I honestly wasn't expecting it.

I appreciate the fact that one can tell he really took his time crafting this album. It really feels like this was 3 years well spent. In our age of fast everything it's nice to see someone as big as he is really taking the time to do something genuinely creative.

I wish more artists would take the time to create something like this...

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

The new Kendrick album is truly on another level of hip-hop. He is really hitting on themes and concepts that can't be discussed here, since it would be against the T.O.S., but they are things that should be openly discussed. I love hearing and seeing a young man have such open, frank and thought provoking ideas about our culture and place in society. Much like his first major label album - and Section.80 before it - this will go down as a classic LP.

And as much as I enjoy Drake, these are the types of records and depth his music can never achieve. His music is well crafted and produced/conceptualized, but he lacks the depth and sincerity to truly be great, IMO.

Funny you bring this up. This album, IMO, is also the reason why Kendrick will never be as "famous/popular" as Drake (and yes, I know that's not a thing that KDot seems to care about too much). After two listens I can't think of a single song that id ever really expect to hear on the radio, or at a club, or anywhere really aside from when I play it in my car. That's why I can never compare Drake/Kendrick because they're going after two completely different sides of the hip-hop "game".

Need to give the album another couple of chances because right now I am just...eh on it. But it took Section 80 a bit to grow on me as a whole, so I'm hoping this will. And since it's Kendrick, it'll get plenty of chances.

This Kendrick album is the type of project that if you say you don't like it, people will tell you you don't get it.

To me, the project is a coaster. Can't rock with 95% of it. I respect the construction of it but he tried to be Outkast too hard and failed. Unfortunate that I waited nearly 3 years for this. This will literally never get another spin from me after the first 3 listens I've already given it.

Meh, to each their own I guess. Let me go back to patiently waiting this Jay Rock project.

Re: Official Hip Hop/Rap Music Thread

I'm somewhat between everyone who loves the Kendrick album and 13 in here.

It's got a message you don't hear from as many mainstream artists, which I can appreciate from that standpoint. It's also goes better all together than as separate songs. It's much weaker without being together imo.

I'm not a person who cares for club bangers for the most part so I'm okay when albums stay away from that. But while liking the message being different (from most mainstream artists) I find myself not wanting to listen to any of the songs individually besides How Much a Dollar Cost (best song on the album to me) and King Kunta.

I actually like the funk as an experiment, but the jazz rap isn't doing it for me with Kendrick's style.

I do agree with 13's first sentence as well and that's one of the things I will hate about this album.

It's a good album to me, not great. I don't think I'll find myself wanting to listen to it much really.

Fair enough. I think that's a perfectly fair assessment of the album.

Right now it's not my album of the year or anything like that. It's not even my favorite album but I do know that like Section 80 growing on me.

Maybe I'm just slower than yall but I'm still trying to catch up and understand each song lol. This one is much more dense for me than GKMC. That one I loved right away.

This one is one I'm slowly getting so I'm loving it more and more. And the production is getting better and better to me as I understand each song more. But as an order of rank it's still below GKMC and Section 80. GKMC was just something I loved right off the bat so I gotta put that first easily.

We'll see how I feel about it a month from now. Will I have that section 80 feel? Or be like u guys and just meh bout it... Who knows

I rather listen to To Pimp a Butterfly then all this Lil Wayne, Drake, Young Thug and all the other BS that gets radio play these days.

The only artist I listen to is Budden, Kendrick, Cole, early to mid 2000's stuff and old school. I can't stand all this new ish thats out.
