Because the amount of relevant info in S2 could have been covered in about four episodes, not 24. It was alright one time through watching it on DVD (I have watched it twice so far) but everyone was complaining about it when it was airing on TV for the first time.

It was a slow season. There is good information (ie: There are hatches, science/research experiments occurred on the Island, we meet Ben, Michael goes AWOL, Desmond caused the crash, there is a giant statue that only stands as half a foot now, we discover that someone was looking for the Island), but all of that information was clouded around the button pushing.

Think about it. There is no more information on the hatches. There is no more information on the research experiments. We just know they are there or happened. Ben is vital now, but one character introduction does not a season make. The statue? Umm, what again? Exactly.

Just a lot of filler in between all of that. If Season One was introducing us to the characters, then Season Two was letting us know that there are a bunch of questions. That's not entertaining. I imagine we'll get a lot of the answers in the last two seasons, but Season Two was pretty much a pamphlet.

Also, after Season One, Lost enjoyed a nice jump in ratings for Season Two. Ratings that slowly went down as the season hit the mid-point. Now, the producers will tell you that Lost suffered from poor scheduling in Season Two. And they did schedule it poorly. No one knew when new episodes would air, and they also had an awkward winter break that killed most of the fanbase.

But, I think the slow story hurt more than anything else. Lost literally lost nearly 1/3 of it's viewership, with less than 1/3 of that lost viewership returning for Season 4.

Not to mention 'the numbers' were huge part of S2 and made you believe that they'd be a key element to the show, yet we barely heard about them again in S3 and 4.

The Numbers pretty much sum up Season 2. Lots of time spent on one thing that was only created to be a huge Easter Egg every episode and season.

And expanding on Ben, he wasn't originally intended to be more than a minor character with a small story arc for S2. The writers ended up changing their mind and expanded his role. If not for that change, what really would we get out of S2?

And for that reason and the numbers mysteriously no longer having significance, I call BS on the writers for saying they had the whole story mapped out from the beginning. But thats another discussion. Season 2 was just fluff. They were milking a cash cow. During season 2, they probably thought Lost was going to have a run like the Simpsons......So they decided to spend 24 episodes taking a walk through a jungle and introducing characters of no significance. I mean seriously, how many Anna Lou Chia Pet episodes could they really make. She was the focal point along with Libby and Echo...and where are they now? Gone because they were either drunk or surly off the set.

i don't think the writers had it all planned out either. hell, i remember them saying before that science would eventually be able to plausibly explain everything on the show. sorry, NOTHING can explain making an entire island go poof into thin air...

I think that's pretty much a given. I belive that they have an idea for what all of this means and they know what the ending will be in the grand scheme, but there is no way that they know all of the little stuff. They need some filler, otherwise the writers just made a 100 hour movie.

The only filler which I really hated was paulo and his girlfriend. I understand that the characters were not liked, but did they really have to waste a whole episode on their demise. They could have just written them off into the background, but rather they wasted a whole hour on them which moved the story nowhere. The only info we got out of that episode was that Ben would use kate and sawyer against Jack for the surgery.

I just gave up on that.

The story obviously is highly believable with some parts that just seem improbable.

The black smoke monster still gets to me. Argh.

I've pretty much avoided any news, spoilers, previews, commercials, etc. about this show because I don't want to run the risk of ruining anything. I'm just ****ing excited.
