I just watched Project X. Thought it was hilarious. Stupid, but hilarious.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Took in 3 flicks today.
Takers. Enjoyed it. I'm a fan of heist movies so this was right up my alley. The character development is good for an action flick. Easy recommendation.
Battleship. Read mixed reviews, so went in with low expectations. Consider me pleasantly surprised. It was the definition of a summer action movie--- thin plot but lots of explosions. Will probably pick this up on blu ray.
Think like a Man. It was between watching this or The Raven. This was a very good rom-com (read: predictable ending). I was sold when I saw Kevin Hart and Gary Owen. Not to mention me being a big fan of Gabrielle Union and Meagan Good.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Brave: I thought this was a great film. The performances here were pretty good, especially Kelly MacDonald as Princess Merida. The visuals looked great. In fact, they were so good that it makes Disney's Tangled look like it's been sitting in the Disney vault for 20 years. The jokes for the most part were pretty funny. Though, I would say that one or two jokes felt a little too juvenile for my tastes. The thing that bothered me was just how the movie abruptly ends. They could of added maybe 10 or so more minutes to advance the story a bit further. Overall, great film and a step-up from Cars 2. Pixar is back on track. I'll give this an A-.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The Man From Nowhere - Another KThriller (that's what I'll call them from now on) about a quiet pawn shop owner, that has a violent past. This one didn't score as high with the critics as the previous 3, but Rotten Tomatoes has an 88% score from the audience. I'm one of that majority that likes this movie. Actually, out of the movies I've posted about right here this one may be my favorite. It's up there. I actually got emotionally invested in this movie, which states just how good it is. A movie in a foreign language got me invested. Maybe it was the little girl in the movie, but the way she looks and the lines just hit home. A better version of Taken, in my opinion, that hits harder. 8.5/10
The Avengers (in 3D): The GF and I went and saw this and it was our first 3D movie. Unfortunately for me I didn't get the most full effect of the 3D as i've only really got one good eye but the perspective effects and some of the actual 3D effects were passable to my eyes. I was very impressed though as I thought it'd be a waste of time and money to see a 3D movie so i'm happy. The GF said if we're still dating we're definitely seeing the next Avatar movie in 3D.
As for the actual movie? WOW!!! Best comic to film adaptation ever as it just nudges the original 1978 Superman off its lofty perch. This flick had the perfect balance of action, plot and humor that made it enjoyable for the full 2 1/2 hours. My GF unfortunately walked out to take a smoke during
SpoilerThe scene where Cap and Iron Man are transporting Loki to the Heli-carrier. She ended up missing the Thor/Loki and Thor/Iron Man fights. She was pretty bummed about that.
The fights in this movie were just breathtaking and everyone was pitch perfect in their parts. Mark Ruffalo was PERFECT as Banner/Hulk and he should've been casted as such in one of the earlier movies. Maybe he wasn't interested? Either way he had that bubbling anger/trying to be a good guy in this crazy world vibe that the best iteration of the character had. In a lot of ways Ruffalo's depiction of the character reminded me A LOT of Bill Bixby which is a high compliment in my books.
The only sour note wasSpoilerFury's manipulation of everyone saying Coulson was dead and showing Cap the trading cards. You'd think these guys would want a little more proof or not let some "guy's" death effect them so much.
Oh and the credits scene? OHHH HELL YEAH BABY!!!!!
Ahem, 5 out of 5 for me
Wrath of the Titans: I didn't see the first one though my GF did and she was underwhelmed by this sequel. I will say there were some very good special effects and the characterization of Hephaestus by Bill Nighy was pretty entertaining. I think this movie takes itself way too seriously and the plot is quite thin. The SFX and battle scenes barely keep this movie on its feet but I watched it all and was entertained a bit.
2 out of 5 stars
Act of Valor: Let's be clear here, it was a great idea to have real US Navy SEALS involved and having key roles in the movie but by golly was this just poorly executed. First of all, none of the SEALS guys could act their way out of a paper bag (not their fault) and it didn't help that the film does so little to make the audience feel for these guys. The story is pretty lame though I will say the interrogation of Christo was an excellent scene. IMO it was the best scene in the whole bloody movie which is saying a lot because this thing had a ton of action and it was pretty cool to see (more or less) what it's like to be a Navy SEAL but there's no heart and soul to this and other than some nebulous "bigger than 9/11" plot there's nothing to keep the viewers' interest.
I give this a split rating: 4 out of 5 (showing what it's like to be a Navy SEAL and the action sequences) 1 out of 5 (as an actual movie)Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I recently watched Drive again. That movie is a masterpiece. I need to buy it and buy the soundtrack.
Seeking Justice: I was pleasantly surprised by this movie. I'll watch anything with Nicholas Cage in it because even if the movie is horrible I enjoy his acting. Nicholas Cage, Guy Pearce, and January Jones acted well, especially Pearce as the bad guy. The plot was entertaining and thrilling, but unraveled towards the end of the movie. Worth a rental.Last edited by Buckeyes_Doc; 06-25-2012, 01:58 PM.Ohio State - Reds - Bengals - Blackhawks - BullsComment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
God Bless America
Decent movie about a man who is sick of the direction America has taken. A recent string of bad luck sets him over the top. Along the way he meets a 16 year old girl and the two take out all those who are about everything they hate.
Movie reminded me of something Matrix would do.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
I've owned the Blu-ray for months and just finally watched this yesterday. Was just about what I expected it to be. Having never read the book, I can't compare the two. Certainly lived up to the hype.
Moonrise Kingdom
How did I forget to post this one. Saw this Saturday night and loved it. A bit too cute at some points for my taste. Funny thing is the movie has an all star cast, was filmed here in Rhode Island, but was only showing on 3 screens. If you're a fan of Wes Anderson, I recommend you see it.Last edited by areobee401; 06-25-2012, 12:44 PM.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I went back and watched movies I hoped I would enjoy. I succeeded.
Adventureland
I gave this one a 4/5. I'm a sucker for these kinds of comedies that aren't laugh out loud funny, but still have their comedic moments tied into a dramatic piece.
Lots of familiar faces as a television fan, but really liked the performances from Jesse Eisenberg and Kristen Stewart.
One thing that gives this film a 4 rather than a 3 is the more realistic portrayal of emotional break up. Rather than seeing people cry excessively to the point of making it uncomfortable for the audience, the characters walk away from the situation or become distraught. I personally believe very few people would ever cry as much as people cry in movies. Thankfully, this film believed the very same.
Also, I love movies that take place in the 80s because it's such a ragtag time.
Thor
I have not watched Avengers and one reason is because I have not seen the onslaught of new superhero films that accompany its characters (exception being Iron Man *yay!* and Iron Man 2 *boo*).
I was pleasantly surprised by the direction of this film. The way Thor is handled in the film gives the story balance and meaning and allows the audience to accept the character for who he is rather than just having to accept who he is. I won't say much more without ruining plot.
Do want to add that there's a very nice mix of drama and action. None seem over-handed or excessive and the careful balance of both help keep the film moving along.
Personally, I am disappointed with how many present characters end up being background fodder despite being at the center of the plot, but understanding the purpose of the film allows me to understand.
4/5.
Paper Man
This one is the most risky of the films I decided to watch. Honestly, I've wanted to watch this since I saw Emma Stone starred in it. I didn't care much for the rest of the actors (and I had no idea I'd be getting even more Ryan Reynolds for the day!) but they all do a decent enough job.
It's not a greatly acted or written film. It has its low-production indie feel which I love, but seems to lack a little substance somewhere.
Despite the story being interesting enough, there is a lot of redundancy in the scenes and approach. Some seems to drag on though you'd expect some development. And what eventually helps stir momentum almost seems to take place too deep into the film.
Having said that, I still enjoyed it and found it to be a nice little movie to pass the time.
3/5."It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Took my girlfriend to go see Madagascar 3 this past weekend (yes, we're actually 20 year olds lol). I thought it was pretty good. The first is still my favorite, but the circus scenes were all really cool. We only saw it in 2D, but I imagine that the circus scenes in 3D would have been pretty awesome to see.NFL: Bills

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The Debt
It's rather taut and compelling as the narrative lives in past events, but it focuses on flashback moments as a setup far too long, and it practically forgets about delivering in the present. Ultimately, the film just leaves you shrugging your shoulders with a very "meh" finish once the credits roll. Jessica Chastain played her role broodingly well, and although Helen Mirren was no slouch herself, I would have liked to see her have more screen time.
If you're not a fan of subtitles on the level that Inglourious Basterds had them, you might want to refrain from seeing the film in general. Not that it's like 50/50, but there is quite a bit of looking at the bottom of the screen.Last edited by Blzer; 06-25-2012, 09:50 PM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment
