I tried to watch Taken 3 last night but I just couldn't finish it. The action scenes were confusing and annoying because every shot had 20 different camera angles that lasted half a second so it was impossible to keep up with what was going on. The acting was subpar and the story wasn't great either. Granted, I didn't finish the movie, but I didn't see it getting any better.

Good choice. It didn't.

Black Rain (1989): This is a pretty good, dark cop film directed by Ridley Scott starring Michael Douglas, Andy Garcia and Ken Takakura. Funny thing about the billing though, I really feel like Garcia was barely much of anything in this flick but he got 2nd billing. I'm guessing the suits didn't want to have a Japanese movie star as their 2nd billed actor. Nonetheless it's the outcome of what happens to Garcia that is pivotal to the plot.

It's a little strange (to me) seeing Michael Douglas playing a tough, almost loose cannon police detective. It's almost playing against type except that Douglas made his bones playing a police detective in the '70s series The Streets of San Francisco. There is a LOT going on with his character but it isn't dwelt upon in a way that derails the plot. The plot basically has Douglas and Garcia getting caught up in a Yakuza war over counterfeit currency plates when they witness a murder at a restaurant. Next thing you know, they got to fly the perp to Japan whereupon they get duped by the guy's thugs and he gets away.

There's the usual culture clash of the way cops operate in NYC compared to the upright, very procedural way the Japanese cops handle their business. Ridley Scott did a great job of showing the confusion and craziness of two very distinct cultures clashing and the linguistic problems of trying to get one's message across. That being said, it's done a little too much to my liking. Ken Takakura (who was also in The Yakuza (1974)) is their liaison with the Japanese police force. At first he holds the same views as the rest of his counterparts but over time he begins to respect and like Douglas and Garcia.

The plot gets a little convoluted but that's where the moodiness and action set pieces come in. Scott films this in darker colors giving off a menacing vibe and while it isn't the most action packed movie, the action scenes still pack a good wallop. The set piece in the climax of the film is quite arresting.

So yeah, a good flick which I give 3 stars.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Pt 1: probably my favorite of the movie renditions because the 3rd book was the most action packed and crazy (outside of the actual arena Games). And just the story tying up nicely together. I never felt this way when reading the books, but a lot of it is super cheesey, like all of Katniss's speeches. I know it's heavy on propaganda, but it fit in the book. I guess they had to really highlight it in the movies to get the point across. I will say the movies really push the propaganda agenda forward and I like that. You really see both sides spinning the story in their favor.

Gone Girl: incredible movie that keeps you on the edge until the ending. I guessed the outcome probably 5-7 times and was wrong every time. Rosamund Pike is hot, too. Got some sideboob there at the end, although it came with what I think was some sidedick sooo, yeah. Affleck was great as well, and the support characters of Neil Patrick Harris & Tyler Perry too. I liked Affleck's sister, Margo. I gotta ask... were they a little too close? One of the final lines of her's stuck with me...

Predestination: time travel movies are my weakness. Keep my head spinning. Still not sure exactly who's who. Hawke was really good.

After those last two my mind is veritably ****ed.

Well, I'm Irish. I saw Finian's Rainbow on TCM on St. Patrick's Day. I love that movie. Its directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Its about a man that travels from Ireland with his daughter to America. He stole a crock of gold from the leprechaun. Its about 47 years old, and its still a good movie. Its a good Saturday movie. If you like a good musical, you should see it.

Chappie - I don't know if I was supposed to take this movie seriously or not. If not, it's an alright movie with some pretty funny moments. Chappie is a charming little robot bastard. If it was intended to be serious though, this movie is borderline godawful. Overall, I'm just confused.

Also, some old guy took his grandson to go see it, and the kid couldn't have been any older than 10. I mean I was raised pretty freely myself, but damn. There were tits and guns and swearing all over the place. Even after the movie was over the old guy has a smile on his face and says to me "That was better than I expected!".

The Seventh Son. Pretty much what I thought it would be. The special effects and some of the creatures were pretty well done, but Jeff Bridges character was just off somehow.... and his ridiculous dialect didn't help one bit. The storyline feels like it's been done too many times before. It's just more proof that special effects will only take you so far.

I didn't like the movie...when they went back in time with Jane and she fell in love with her younger self...i couldnt take the movie seriously anymore

Interstellar - It's a slow burner and somewhat emotional. Its a film for smart people. I still think its overrated. Not bad just overrated. 6/10

Rudderless - 9/10 - I really liked this movie. It's about a grieving father who son died in a college school shooting. He finds his son's original music in some CDs in his stuff and begins playing the music in clubs. The music in the movie is really good. For anyone that might have been personally affected by a school shooting, this movie might not be a hit with you. Bonus points for the music though, if you like that style of music the movie should be good for you.

Whiplash - 8/10 - Loved the dedication of the main character in the movie to being the best drummer. I don't think I could have endured what he did. The teacher, man that guy was passionate, but only had one way to drive people.

Blended - 8/10 - I needed something funny after those movies and this hit the spot. I love Adam Sandler comedies, and this the typical one. I put it right up there with his best comedies.

Birdman - 7/10 - I kept waiting for this movie to be great to me, never happened, but parts of it were enjoyable. It was a original which I always like to see. I liked the ending as well which makes it worth seeing again.

I don't know about "smart people" but I think it for the true sci-fi afficianado.

Rudderless was one of my top 3 movies of the year.

Blue Ruin. A really good slow-burn of a movie about a schlub whose life fell apart after his parents were murdered. When the murderer is paroled, he plots revenge. No Hollywood action stuff here; it plays out as if it would if a normal person decided to do something drastic. The guy that plays the lead is fantastic. In fact the whole cast is. Not perfect by any means, but darned good. 8/10.
