Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope
I feel the more I say, the more damage I'll do given my lack of knowledge for the surrounding culture of this saga, so with regard to the film and story itself I'll be brief, then I'll skirt around that with common Blzer word-spewing.
It was pretty slow until Skywalker showed up, and even then it felt without a real purpose or destination until Han Solo showed up. I know what they were aiming toward the entire time, but you don't really feel it until it actually starts happening, I suppose is what I'm saying. Given anything that I have really seen that either parodies or references Star Wars was for the most part regarding this film (whether it's Family Guy or pretty much anything else), I think that will be nice since most of what I see hereon out will appear "fresh" to me. However, when all is said and done I think I will be more into doing something like watching those FG episodes, so I can really feel what things are being spoofed or hit right on the nose.
I'm a fan of space stuff I guess, but not the weird stuff with aliens playing instruments and stuff. I thought characters like Chewbacca and C3PO would be cringing for me, but they were more than suitable. Really enjoyed them (Chewy didn't do too much, but less might be more with him). It's also interesting seeing all of the sci-fi tropes that exist in this film, probably originated with this film. I don't even know where "pew pew" first came from, but I could go without having to hear that too much if all it means is a bunch of missed shots. Man, if there was one thing that was tough to watch, it's complete inability to hit a target. I'm guessing this will continue through all of the films.
Given that the film was made in the mid-1970s, I don't know if what you say is "the visuals held up well," but they did not detract from the experience nor did they become too hokey for the involving story. I was immersed and felt as I believe I was supposed to for any involving scene. The audio on the other hand left a lot to be desired, but I suppose that's expected.
Speaking of which, I think some people have the notion that I refrain from watching old movies because of the visuals, and that's not quite the case; rather, I normally feel if something is too technologically dated that they would have to hold back and limit themselves so much from what they wanted to do, that the lack of ambition might bring forth a lack of creativity or ways that can still make me open my eyes with regard to what they want to do. That being said, they went above and beyond what I expected this film could provide, which is probably good news going forward for every other film that is made thereafter.
By the way, I plan to watch these in machete order leading up to The Force Awakens.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The inability to hit a target definetly contunues. New Hope is probably the slowest starting of the 6 movies. 5, 6, 1, and 3 all open with an action sequence, and 2 has one really early on.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
One thing I kind of chalked it up to was the fact that I know I'm going midway through a saga, which of course everyone did when they first saw these nearly 40 years ago. But I know I shouldn't have been thinking "origin story" when everything came into place.
The good news is I could have been turned off by this film enough to not want to see the others. I could have said, "I'm done, this is not for me." That definitely wasn't the case at all. Granted, if I lived under a rock my entire life, pulled this from the shelves and said, "What's this?" and watched it, I would have liked it, but not been moved by it. I'm sure this is defined more by what it did at its time and with the other five films around it (plus anything else they've made out of this), and I'm only a little sorry that I've missed out on that all this time.
But hey, I'll be caught up soon enough! Just not as in-the-know with the established culture.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I was going to say.....lol. Episode IV has one of the most iconic opening sequences in cinema! Going to the theater in 1977 and seeing that huuuuge Star Destroyer fill the screen made quite the impression that you were in for an amazing ride.
Anyway....
"Minions"
Glad I rented instead of buying. There are a few good scenes but I think you see most of the best stuff in the trailer and call it a day. Minions work better in minimovies/shorts, or as sidekicks in DM films in my opinion (and I love the little guys).
"Ant-Man"
I wouldn't go as far as amazing, but it is definitely fun and well made...and Evangeline Lilly, oyy...
This was a tough concept to pull off and they did it quite well. Michael Pena was lol funny. And Evangeline Lilly, oyy...
Yeah I like her.GO 'HAWKS!

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
This weekend we watched:
The Wannabe- Meh. Didn't really like it. This is directed by Caputo from Orange is the New Black. Based on a true story about a wannabe gangsta who idolized John Gotti.
Cooties- Man we both lived this 1. This had Elijah Wood in it, as a substitute teacher back in his home town during a "Cooties" outbreak at the school he's teaching at for the day.
Simply an awesome concept for a movie. Highly recommended

Saw The Wannabe also. Vincent Piazza doesn't seem to have what it takes to do a lead carrying role, but I think he would be fantastic in another supporting mafia role like in Boardwalk Empire or Jersey Boys.
His character in this movie was just too pathetic to watch continually. You couldn't even really empathize with him. The reasoning for idolizing Gotti just wasn't formed.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Finally got around to using my passive 3D HDTV this weekend.
Jurassic World 3D. I enjoyed it a lot. The character development wasn't as good as I hoped. The 3D was pretty good---definitely could have been better. The surround sound was great.
Ant-Man 3D. Definitely a step below the typical Marvel super hero movies. If you're a fan of 3D...this is worth at least 1 viewing. The 3D was done really really well. The movie itself was so-so.
Can't wait until school lets out this week. San Andreas, Jupiter Ascending and Mad Max are up next on the 3D viewings.Last edited by GAMEC0CK2002; 12-14-2015, 09:54 PM.Comment

Jersey Boys
I didn't think it was as bad critics were saying. My mom played Four Seasons along with motown all day so loved hearing the music.
The guy playing Frankie was spot on with the voice. Surprised to hear he was singing for real.

Also, according to historyvshollywood.com
SpoilerThe true story confirms that Frankie Valli's daughter Francine died from a drug overdose in 1980, which the family believes was unintentional. What is not included in the movie is the fact that he lost two daughters that year. In addition to Francine, his stepdaughter Celia had died earlier that year. After discovering she was locked out of her New York flat, Celia fell from a fire escape while trying to get in.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Watched Dope over the weekend.
To me, it was like a modern, urban Dazed & Confused mixed with Malibu's Most Wanted for some of the outrageous stuff. Gave me that sense of nostalgia those movies bring about now. Really well done, fun and light even though it tackles some serious issues head on. I'd recommend it to anyone, especially people from my generation (late 80s/early 90s). I want to see more of the actor who played Malcolm.NHL - Philadelphia Flyers
NFL - Buffalo Bills
MLB - Cincinnati Reds

Creed
Wow, amazing. Loved it and it's up there with Mad Max and The Martian, maybe better. I felt so happy seeing it and I'm gonna check it out again after star wars.
The direction and acting was fantastic, the boxing action felt authentic, it's a movie you gotta see.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
No you don't at all to get the story but there's a bunch of moments that nod to the old movies and they just make it special.
But come on man, you have to see Rocky, it's a classic. That should be the next series you tackle since your almost donr with Star Wars. At least the first 3 before seeing Creed.
